Ogun: APC, APM supporters in bloody clash (PHOTOS)

Many people were, Thursday, injured while many properties were vandalised when supporters of Allied People’s Movement, APM and the All Progressives Congress, APC clashed in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Trouble started, Daily Independent gathered, when the campaign teams of the APC governorship candidate, Dapo Abiodun and that of a House of Representatives candidate of the APM, Mikky Kassim met at Elega junction in Ward 4 of Abeokuta North Local Government Area of the State capital.

A source within the campaign train told out correspondent that the campaign trains ran at each other at the junction were road construction was going on which led to a very heavy holdup.

Kassim, it was learnt, alighted from his vehicle to control the traffic but tension build up when the supporters of APC sighted him and assumed that he was at the place to attack Abiodun and his supporters.

Quick intervention of security operatives in the train of Abiodun prevented the two supporters from clashing as the vehicle movement eased.

A few minutes later, supporters of APM who were waiting for the arrival of Kassim, a member of House of Representatives representing Abeokuta North/Obafemi-Owode/Odeda federal constituency at Ward 5 were attacked as many, including elderly people were injured from the scene.

One of the victims who spoke with our Correspondent at her hospital bed where she was receiving treatment, Alhaja Larogun said some masked thugs allegedly wearing Abiodun’s T-Shirt and caps attacked the APM supporters with dangerous weapons including gun and matchetes.

Daily Independent, observed that two vehicles parked in front of a family house belonging to Alhaji Sarafa Isola, the campaign DG of the APM governorship candidate, Adekunle Akinlade, had their windscreen destroyed.

Three persons were seen on the hospital bed while a barber’s shop beside the campaign ground was also destroyed.

The thugs immediately moved to the house of the Vice Chairman of Abeokuta North local government where campaign billboards were destroyed.

When Daily Independent Correspondent visited the campaign office of Kassim at Oke-Sokori in the same local government, no fewer than four campaign vehicles belonging to APM were destroyed.

Many armed police officers were sighted in front of the office.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the police was aware of the clash but yet to get the full details of the incident.
