A non-governmental organisation, EnviroNews Advocacy and Campaigns for Sustainability (ENDVOCAS) has warned residents of Ibadan against continuous dumping of refuse on Ogunpa River.
The group noted that continuous dumping of refuse on the river was an invitation to another flood disaster in the ancient city.
Our correspondent reports that Ogunpa River stretches through some areas in Ibadan and has been a dumping site for many residents of the ancient city in the last few years.
It was gathered that flood ravaged some parts of Ibadan in 2011 as a result of heavy rain that was witnessed in the ancient city.
ENDVOCAS has now raised an alarm, saying that continuous dumping of refuse in the river was an invitation to another disaster.
The group said this while addressing a press conference held at Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Secretariat in Ibadan at the weekend.
It advised residents of the ancient city to stop dumping of refuse on the river.
Executive Director of the group, Micheal Simire, while addressing journalists, said that there was impending danger if the issue was not addressed urgently.
Simire then used the opportunity to advise governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State to put measures in place to halt all illegal dumping of refuse in the river.
He noted that all efforts must be put in place to avoid another flood disaster in the ancient city.
He said, “Government should put an urgent end to all illegal dumping of refuse in Ogunpa River Channel, and also put in place measures to ensure that the ugly incident never reemerges in future.
“We are concerned citizens, all we want is the best for our state and our dear country, what we seek is for the betterment of the people; protection of people and the environment is sacrosanct.”
