Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has unveiled plans to construct a state-of-the-art Anthony Joshua Indoor Boxing Ring in Abeokuta.

The facility is part of the administration’s drive to promote sports development in the state.

During a reception at his office on Monday, the Governor also announced that two-time world heavyweight boxing champion Joshua would light the torch for the Gateway Games National Sports Festival, now rescheduled for May next year.

“We are officially naming you our sports ambassador,” Abiodun said.

“In addition to that, you will light the torch for the Gateway Sports Festival, and we will construct an Anthony Joshua Indoor Boxing Ring here in Abeokuta. This arena will be a hub to inspire young talents and bring you closer to home.”

The Governor further revealed plans to gift Joshua a house in Sagamu, adding that the boxer’s involvement would help elevate sports initiatives in Ogun State.

Abiodun appealed to Joshua to collaborate with the state in hosting a boxing championship and to mentor emerging athletes.

“We want you to work with our Director General of the National Sports Commission and the Commissioner for Sports Development to ensure Ogun becomes a hub for boxing tournaments leading to the festival,” he said.

Highlighting preparations for the National Sports Festival, the Governor disclosed ongoing refurbishments of key sporting facilities, emphasising the unifying power of sports.

“Sports bring people together globally. Ogun has a wealth of talent in music, arts, and sports, and we are proud of your achievements on the world stage.”

Abiodun commended Joshua for his international success, assuring him of the state’s unwavering support.

“Your journey is a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes in Ogun. We are committed to supporting your career and celebrating your victories.”

In response, Joshua expressed his eagerness to promote Ogun State globally by highlighting its abundant talent pool. “I look forward to showcasing Ogun’s potential to the world and inspiring young people to achieve greatness,” he said.

The partnership underscores Ogun State’s vision to harness its sporting potential and inspire a new generation of athletes.
