Dr. Victor Olunloyo, former Governor of Oyo State, has passed away at 89, just days shy of his 90th birthday.
His family announced his death in a statement on Sunday, describing him as a renowned technocrat, mathematician, and engineer.
Dr. Olunloyo held notable positions, including first Rector of Ibadan Polytechnic and Kwara State Polytechnic, and was also known for his traditional titles as Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife.
Early Life and Career
Born on April 14, 1935, Dr. Olunloyo served as Governor of Oyo State from October 1, 1983, to December 31, 1983, during the Second Republic. His tenure was cut short when General Muhammadu Buhari’s military regime seized power.
Tributes and Legacy
The family has asked for privacy as they arrange a fitting burial. Dr. Olunloyo’s passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes, with many celebrating his life and service to Nigeria.
The statement signed by Oladapo Ogunwusi on behalf of the family, reads, “With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, former governor of Oyo State, mathematician and engineer and renowned technocrat, a few days before his 90th birthday.
“The Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife, Dr. Olunloyo was first Rector, Ibadan polytechnic and first Rector, Kwara State Polytechnic among other notable appointments.
“His long record of service to the nation and humanity is a source of pride to his family and associates even as we come to grip with this devastating event.
“The Olunloyo family will appreciate the understanding of the press and the public as they commence efforts to give him a befitting burial.
“Even from everlasting to everlasting, He is God.”
