Russia has warned that attempts to resolve Ukraine’s security issues without its involvement are a “road to nowhere,” following recent meetings between European leaders and US President Donald Trump on security guarantees for Kyiv.
“We cannot agree with proposals to resolve questions of collective security without the Russian Federation. This will not work,” Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday.
Lavrov stressed that the West, particularly the United States, “understands perfectly well that seriously discussing security issues without the Russian Federation is a utopia; it’s a road to nowhere.”
The comments came two days after Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House, and shortly after Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Trump is seeking to push Putin and Zelenskyy toward a settlement more than three years after Russia invaded Ukraine, but deep divisions remain.
Lavrov said any summit between Putin and Zelenskyy “must be prepared in the most meticulous way” to avoid worsening the conflict. He also accused European leaders of “clumsy attempts” to influence Trump’s stance on Ukraine, claiming they offered “no constructive ideas” during their meeting.
Meanwhile, NATO military chiefs were scheduled to meet on Wednesday to discuss potential security guarantees for Ukraine, as a coalition of 30 countries—including European nations, Japan, and Australia—works on plans to support a possible peace agreement.
Trump has ruled out sending US troops to Ukraine, and Russia has repeatedly stated it would reject any NATO presence in the country.
Tensions remain high after Poland reported that an object resembling a Russian Shahed drone landed overnight in a cornfield in its eastern region, calling it a “provocation” amid ongoing peace discussions.
