Fela Anikulapo-Kuti (1938–1997), Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer, composer, and fearless political activist, was photographed at his home in Ikeja, Lagos, circa 1983.

Much of Fela’s strength and courage was tied to the influence of his mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, an activist, protector, and lifelong motivator.

She was his greatest source of inspiration, often referred to as his “soul-mate” in the struggle.

Many admirers even called him “Omo Iya Aje” (Son of a witch), a title suggesting supernatural courage and protection in his countless confrontations with the Nigerian state.

Whether mystical or not, the truth remains that Funmilayo shielded her son in both spirit and action.

During Fela’s numerous clashes with state security forces, she often stood as his defender and comforter.

Her tragic death in 1978 left Fela devastated, stripped of the one person he leaned on for strength.

In the years that followed, new spiritual figures, such as Professor Hindu, entered his life, taking advantage of his grief and vulnerability.

Yet, even in his darkest moments, Fela’s music and activism bore the unmistakable imprint of his mother’s enduring influence.
