Quality Health, Safety and Environment Manager at JMG Limited, Benedict Odamah, has urged Nigerians to embrace household items made from recycled materials as part of efforts to tackle the country’s mounting waste challenge and promote a cleaner environment.
A statement on Thursday stated that Odamah made the appeal in Lagos during an event organised by JMG to mark the 2025 World Clean-Up Day, themed “Tackling Textile and Fashion Waste.”
Environmental experts have consistently pointed out that recycled waste can be converted into a wide range of useful products, including building and road materials, new paper goods such as tissues and paperboard, clothing and furniture like fleece jackets and carpets, as well as automotive and industrial parts.
Speaking during the exercise, which saw JMG staff clear plastics and other solid waste around the Gbagada axis, where the company has its largest workforce, Odamah stressed that patronising recycled products would boost the recycling industry and cut down the volume of waste ending up in landfills.
He said, “Nigeria should begin to patronise household items that come out of recycled materials. If we don’t purchase those products, it discourages those in the recycling business. The government must also intensify sensitisation and awareness campaigns.
“There is a lot of waste we produce daily. For example, waste materials can be used to repair roads instead of relying solely on bitumen. If the government and individuals patronise these products, the industry will thrive, jobs will be created, and waste will no longer simply end up in landfills.”
Highlighting JMG’s commitment to sustainability, Odamah explained that the firm sorts its waste and recycles up to 90 per cent of it.
He added that the company had also introduced solar power solutions to reduce carbon emissions.
“All our activities are sustainable, and we ensure they do not negatively impact the environment. Whatever comes out of our processes can feed into other processes; we can resell or recycle them.
“In waste management, the rule is simple: take only what you need and not more, so nothing becomes unnecessary waste,” he said.
Also speaking, JMG’s Group General Manager, Rabi Jammal, said environmental sustainability remained central to the company’s operations and corporate social responsibility projects.
She said, “We are strong believers in environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and community participation. It is part of our ISO certification that every process in JMG incorporates health, safety, and environmental standards. We have just integrated a hybrid solar energy solution at our head office to reduce emissions and promote energy efficiency.”
JMG’s Marketing Executive, Goke Atiba, also stressed that the company was deeply invested in environmental conservation and community sensitisation.
Commending the initiative, a Gbagada resident, Kayode Adebayo, said, “Seeing JMG roll up its sleeves to clean the environment where they do business shows they genuinely care about our surroundings and our wellbeing. It gives us hope that together we can make a real difference.”
