The Cross River State Government has applauded the Federal Government’s efforts in the restoration of Nigeria’s public primary school system.

The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Stephen Odey, gave the accolade during the induction of 56 volunteer teachers trained by Save the Children International, with support from the Global Partnership for Education, into the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria.

Odey, represented by the Education Secretary for the Ogoja Local Government Area, Ernest Otong, acknowledged FG’s “steady support to public schools across the state,” noting that the newly certified teachers would help reduce manpower shortages that had long undermined teaching and learning.

He said, “Our schools have battled inadequate manpower for years. With this intervention, supported by the state government’s ongoing recruitment drive, learning can now take place more effectively.”

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, noted that deeper partnerships remain critical in tackling the persistent challenges confronting basic education, especially in communities where teacher shortages have impaired learning.

Represented by Godwin Odey, a senior official from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Minister commended Save the Children International for its timely intervention.

“This programme is helping us to rebuild public confidence in basic education. Save the Children has stepped in where the needs are greatest and the impact is already visible,” he said.

Earlier, the Education Coordinator for Save the Children International, Oyeniyi Omopariola, described the certification as a strategic investment in human capital and a practical step toward improving teaching quality in disadvantaged communities.

He urged State Governments and Universal Basic Education Boards to expedite the recruitment and deployment of the newly certified teachers so that the gains of the Global Partnership for Education project are fully sustained.

The Director of Certification and Licensing at TRCN, Abimbola Okunola, who administered the oath of office, said the partnership among TRCN, Save the Children International and the Global Partnership for Education demonstrates a sustainable model for expanding access to quality education in hard-to-reach areas.
