The Super Eagles of Nigeria maintained their impressive momentum at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a convincing 3–1 victory over Uganda, completing their Group C campaign with a perfect nine points.
Nigeria became the first team at AFCON 2025 to win all three group matches, having earlier defeated Tanzania 2-1 and Tunisia 3-2 to seal early qualification for the Round of 16.
Eric Chelle made some changes for the final group game in Fes, handing the captain’s armband to Victor Osimhen and giving opportunities to fringe players.
Moses Simon marked a personal milestone by earning his 91st international cap, while Ryan Alebiosu made his senior Super Eagles debut.
Nigeria dominated possession and pressure early on and were rewarded in the first half when Paul Onuachu opened the scoring to give the Super Eagles a deserved lead at the break.
Shortly after half-time, Uganda were reduced to 10 men. Salim Magoola was shown a straight red card in the 56th minute for a reckless challenge.
Nigeria took advantage as Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika struck twice in the second half to put the contest beyond reach.
Uganda pulled one back through Rogers Mato with 15 minutes remaining, but it proved to be little more than a consolation.
Uganda finished bottom of Group C with just one point and bowed out of the tournament.
The 3–1 victory confirmed Nigeria’s place at the top of Group C with maximum points, sending the Super Eagles into the knockout phase with confidence and momentum.
AFCON 2023 finalists, Nigeria, will face a third-placed team from Group B or Group F in the Round of 16 on January 5.
