A heartbreaking and disturbing case has emerged in Nigeria as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Abba, is feared to have been killed by terrorists even after his family reportedly paid a ₦10 million ransom for his freedom.
Abba was abducted by armed bandits, and a painful video surfaced showing him being beaten, tortured, and humiliated by his captors. Despite the family making sacrifices to raise the ransom money demanded by the kidnappers, the situation reportedly worsened.
After receiving the ₦10 million payment, the kidnappers allegedly demanded additional items including motorcycles before suddenly cutting off all communication with the family. Since then, no contact has been made.
With hope fading, the family is now preparing to conduct funeral prayers in absentia, according to Islamic tradition, fearing the worst may have happened.
This tragic story highlights the growing insecurity in Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom have become alarmingly frequent. While the Nigerian government maintains its policy against paying ransom under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, many families find themselves with no choice when the lives of loved ones are at stake.
Is Nigeria doing enough to protect its citizens and young NYSC members serving the nation?
