Liverpool midfielder, Curtis Jones, was involved in a heated exchange with teammate, Dominik Szoboszlai, after the club’s 1-0 pre-season victory over Wrexham at Yankee Stadium on Thursday.
As reported by BBC Sport on Friday, the disagreement occurred after the final whistle as Liverpool players walked across the pitch to acknowledge supporters.
Jones and Szoboszlai were seen in a tense conversation, with defender Kostas Tsimikas later joining the exchange.
The reason behind the argument remains unclear, although it appeared to follow an incident during the match involving the captain’s armband.
When Szoboszlai was substituted, the Hungary international handed the armband to Tsimikas rather than Jones. Footage from the post-match scenes later showed Tsimikas throwing the armband onto the pitch during the exchange.
The incident comes amid uncertainty over Jones’ future at Anfield. Liverpool rejected a £21.7m offer from Inter Milan for the midfielder earlier this summer, while the 25-year-old has just one year remaining on his current contract.
Despite the transfer speculation, Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola recently expressed his desire for Jones to remain at the club, praising his ability and performances.
“I rate Curtis very highly,” Iraola said. “For me, he is a great, great player, and I hope he can continue with us and continue performing the way he has been performing.”
Liverpool are currently on their pre-season tour of North America and will conclude their preparations on Sunday when they face Leeds in Chicago, with kick-off scheduled for 21:00 BST.
