The Kano State governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Aminu Gwarzo, has condemned the killing of social media critic, Ibrahim Dan Shagamu, in the Gaida area of Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state.

Gwarzo described the killing as a disturbing act that should concern residents, stressing that no citizen should lose his life because of his opinions, criticism or political views.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu, a copy of which was made available to PUNCH in Kano, Gwarzo described the murder as “heinous, barbaric and totally condemnable.”

“I am calling on security agencies to immediately commence a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing, identify those responsible and ensure that they are brought to justice,” Gwarzo said.

Dan Shagamu was reportedly attacked and killed inside his residence in Gaida on Monday, an incident that has raised concerns among residents over the safety of citizens who use social media to express their opinions.

The Kano State Police Command has since arrested two suspects in connection with the death of the political commentator.

The command, in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the incident occurred at about 11:30pm on Monday after the Vigilante Group Commander in Gaida reported that unknown hoodlums had forcibly entered Dan Shagamu’s residence and attacked him with sharp objects.

Gwarzo said political disagreements and criticism should never be allowed to degenerate into violence or become grounds for taking a human life.

“The murder of Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu is deeply disturbing and condemnable. No disagreement, criticism or political difference should ever justify taking a human life,” he said.

He added, “The life of every citizen matters, regardless of political affiliation, opinion or social status. Those behind this terrible act must be found and brought to justice.”

The NDC candidate urged security agencies to treat the investigation with the urgency it deserved, warning that failure to apprehend the perpetrators could deepen public fear and undermine confidence in the security system.

He expressed condolences to the family, friends and associates of the deceased, urging them to remain calm while the authorities conduct a comprehensive investigation.

Gwarzo also called for strengthened security measures across communities in Kano State, stressing that protecting lives and property remained one of the fundamental responsibilities of government.

He urged residents not to resort to reprisal attacks or take the law into their own hands, but to provide useful information to security agencies to assist in identifying and apprehending those responsible.

Gwarzo said Kano must remain a state where citizens could live, work and express their views without fear of violence.
