A 15-year-old domestic worker identified as Amarachi has been rescued after she was allegedly locked inside a toilet for several months by her employers in Abuloma, Rivers State.
Amarachi, who hails from Ebonyi State, was reportedly working for a couple, Eze Simeon and his wife, when she was allegedly punished over an undisclosed offence and confined to the toilet.
According to reports, the teenager endured severe neglect during her alleged confinement. She was reportedly fed only once a day, with leftover food said to have been what she survived on.
Her ordeal reportedly came to an end on Monday, September 14, when she seized an opportunity to call for help after the couple left the house. Her cries reportedly drew the attention of neighbours, who quickly alerted the police at the Abuloma Division.
Police operatives responded to the distress call and rescued the teenager from the residence.
Confirming the incident, the Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, Agabe Blessing, said investigations are ongoing. She disclosed that the couple had been taken into police custody as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s alleged confinement.
Meanwhile, Amarachi’s family members have reportedly arrived in Rivers State to take her back home following her rescue.
