In many families, an aging parent expects their children to be there for them—because, after all, “I raised you.”
But some children carry painful memories from childhood.
They may remember being constantly insulted, neglected, rejected, compared with other siblings, denied affection, or treated harshly while growing up. Years later, those experiences can affect how they relate to their parents as adults.
This raises an uncomfortable question:
Can a parent demand lifelong devotion from a child after failing to build a healthy relationship with that child?
At the same time, we should not assume that every child who distances themselves from a parent was mistreated. Family conflicts can be complicated, and children can also make choices that deeply hurt their parents.
The bigger lesson may be this:
Parenting is not only about providing food, clothing and education. The relationship you build with your children can matter long after they leave home.
And for children, adulthood also brings responsibility for how they handle difficult family relationships.
💬 WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Should children care for their parents in old age no matter what happened during childhood?
Or should parents also be held accountable for the relationship they built with their children?
