YOU CANNOT MARRY SOMEONE AND STILL LET YOUR MOTHER, FATHER, BROTHER OR SISTER RUN YOUR MARRIAGE.

This is one of the uncomfortable truths many African families don’t want to discuss.

In many African homes, especially in Nigeria, family loyalty is considered sacred. We are taught to respect our parents, support our siblings and never forget where we came from.

But marriage creates a new household.

A husband should not allow his mother or siblings to constantly come before his wife and children.

And a wife should not allow her parents or siblings to constantly come before her husband and children.

The rule should be the same for both.

Respect your parents.
Support your siblings.
Help your family when you can.

But don’t allow “Mama said…”, “My brother needs…” or “My sister told me…” to become more powerful than the agreement between husband and wife.

Your extended family deserves love and respect.

Your marriage deserves boundaries.

This is not about abandoning African family values. It is about recognizing that when two people marry and have children, they also take on a responsibility to protect and build their own household.

🔥 HERE’S THE QUESTION:

When your spouse and your parents or siblings have a serious disagreement, who should take priority?

And should the exact same rule apply to both husbands and wives?

👇 Let Nigerians and Africans debate this one.
