WHAT HAPPENED TO THE AFRICAN FAMILY? — ARE WE LOSING THE VALUES THAT HELD US TOGETHER?

Published

There was a time in many African communities when family was bigger than just your parents, siblings and children.

Your uncle could correct you.
Your aunt could feed you.
Your neighbour could look after you.
Your cousin could become your closest friend.
And when one family member was facing a serious problem, the entire family could come together.

We were taught:

Family is a foundation of our values.

But today, many African families are facing a painful reality.

💔 Brothers and sisters stop speaking because of money.
💔 Families fight over land, houses and inheritance.
💔 Jealousy grows when one person becomes more successful than the others.
💔 Some relatives only appear when there is something to gain.
💔 Children grow up far away from grandparents and extended family.
💔 Marriage conflicts sometimes turn entire families against one another.
💔 And social media has made it easier to watch people’s lives without actually checking on them.

Have we become too individualistic?

Our parents and grandparents often believed that when one person succeeds, the family should benefit.

Today, some people believe:

“I worked for my money. Why should I help anybody?”

But there is another side to the story.

Not every family relationship should be preserved at any cost. Some people have been genuinely hurt, betrayed or abused by relatives, and creating healthy boundaries can be necessary.

So perhaps the real question is not simply:

“Why are African families falling apart?”

The bigger question is:

HOW DO WE RESTORE LOVE, RESPECT, UNITY AND RESPONSIBILITY WITHOUT IGNORING THE REAL PROBLEMS WITHIN OUR FAMILIES?

Africa has always been known for community, hospitality and extended family bonds.

If those values disappear, what exactly are we passing on to the next generation?
