FAAN reacts to trending video of Immigration officer begging for money at Airport

The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has reacted to a viral video which captures an official of the Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, begging a passenger for money at the airport.

Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of FAAN, in a statement on Wednesday, said such behaviour is totally unacceptable.

It was reports that a yet-to-be-identified Immigration Service officer was caught on camera persistently begging a tourist for money at the International Airport and was even ready to collect card payment.

The behaviour of the immigration officer, according to public opinion, highlights a deep decay in Nigeria’s values.

Some Nigerians also see it as a disgrace not only to the official, but to the government, insisting that if officers were adequately paid, perhaps they won’t get involved in such a national disgrace.

Kuku’s statement said the officer in question has been withdrawn from his duty post and is currently facing disciplinary action with the NIS.

“I have seen the disturbing video circulating of a Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) official begging a passenger for money at the airport,” Kuku said in the statement.

“I want to ensure you know that this behavior is completely unacceptable and does not reflect the passenger experience we hope to provide at our terminals.

“The officer in question has been immediately withdrawn from duty at the terminal and is currently facing disciplinary action with the NIS.

“We are committed to maintaining the integrity and professionalism of all personnel working at our airports.

“I would like to ask all passengers to report any similar incidents or seek immediate support through the phone numbers and QR codes provided below.

“Your safety and comfort are our top priorities, and we will take every necessary step to ensure a pleasant travel experience for everyone,” She added.
