Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma Shine At ATX Sprint Classic In Texas

Nigerian sprinter, Favour Ofili, made headlines as she emerged the winner of the women’s 100m event at the ATX Sprint Classic in Texas.

This was Favour Ofili’s first competitive appearance since news went viral that she was about to abandon Nigeria for Turkey due to the inadequacies of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).

This was also her first outing a month after breaking the women’s 150m world record at the Adidas Atlanta City Games with a time of 15.85s.

During the one-day event at the ATX Sprint Classic in Texas, Ofili, who holds the Nigerian 200m record at 21.96s, first ran a race to win her heat in a time of 10.87s. This represents her new personal best after shattering her previous lifetime record of 10.94s to reach the final ahead of American Kayla White, who ran a time of 11.07s.

The 22-year-old was not the only Nigerian sprinter at the event. Rosemary Chukwuma and Success Umukoro were also in action in the women’s 100m heats.

Chukwuma made it to the final after winning her heat by outrunning Gabby Thomas of the United States of America, with a time of 10.93s. While Umukoro didn’t make it to the final as she finished third in her heat with a time of 11.43s.

During the final, the 23-year-old Chukwuma who exceeded her season’s personal best time at the event, couldn’t make it to the podium as she managed to finish 5th in a time of 10.98s.

Note that Chukwuma and Favour Ofili have qualified to represent Nigeria at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan later this year.
