President Bola Tinubu has congratulated two prominent Nigerians, Farouk Gumel and Tobi Amusan, for their recent achievements on the global stage.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Nigerian leader described their feats as a source of national pride.

Reports has it that Gumel was recently appointed Chairman of the Botswana Sovereign Wealth Fund Limited, a position the President said reflects both his personal competence and the high esteem in which Nigerian professionals are held internationally.

The President praised Gumel’s track record, particularly in his role as Vice Chairman for Africa at the Tropical General Investment Group, where he has contributed significantly to Nigeria’s food sufficiency initiatives.

“His leadership in this significant role brings immense pride to our nation, and I am confident he will excel and further cement Nigeria’s reputation for excellence in global finance,” Tinubu said.

Also commended was Nigerian sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan, who claimed a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles on Monday at the 2025 World Athletics Championships held in Tokyo, Japan.

The President lauded Amusan’s “relentless drive, resilience, and unwavering spirit,” noting that her performance once again exemplifies the heights Nigerians can attain through hard work and dedication.

“Tobi has once again demonstrated that with patriotic fervour, coupled with hard work and determination, any height is surmountable.

“Her achievement is a source of national pride,” the President said.

Tinubu wished both Gumel and Amusan continued success in their respective careers and assured them of the government’s full support.

Gumel currently serves as the Vice Chairman for Africa at the Tropical General Investment Group, a conglomerate with a strong presence in agribusiness, finance, and manufacturing. Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in advancing Nigeria’s food sufficiency agenda and strengthening regional economic cooperation. He is also a former Senior Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he provided strategic advisory services across Africa. His new appointment marks a significant milestone in international finance and governance.

While, Amusan, who made history in 2022 by becoming the first Nigerian to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships, continues to set the pace in global track and field. She is the current world record holder in the 100m hurdles, having set a blistering time of 12.12 seconds at the 2022 championships in Oregon, USA. Her latest medal adds to a growing list of accolades that include gold medals at the African Championships, Commonwealth Games, and Diamond League titles.
