President Bola Tinubu has congratulated two prominent Nigerians, Farouk Gumel and Tobi Amusan, for their recent achievements on the global stage.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Nigerian leader described their feats as a source of national pride.

Reports has it that Gumel was recently appointed Chairman of the Botswana Sovereign Wealth Fund Limited, a position the President said reflects both his personal competence and the high esteem in which Nigerian professionals are held internationally.

The President praised Gumel’s track record, particularly in his role as Vice Chairman for Africa at the Tropical General Investment Group, where he has contributed significantly to Nigeria’s food sufficiency initiatives.

“His leadership in this significant role brings immense pride to our nation, and I am confident he will excel and further cement Nigeria’s reputation for excellence in global finance,” Tinubu said.

Also commended was Nigerian sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan, who claimed a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles on Monday at the 2025 World Athletics Championships held in Tokyo, Japan.

The President lauded Amusan’s “relentless drive, resilience, and unwavering spirit,” noting that her performance once again exemplifies the heights Nigerians can attain through hard work and dedication.

“Tobi has once again demonstrated that with patriotic fervour, coupled with hard work and determination, any height is surmountable.

“Her achievement is a source of national pride,” the President said.

Tinubu wished both Gumel and Amusan continued success in their respective careers and assured them of the government’s full support.

Gumel currently serves as the Vice Chairman for Africa at the Tropical General Investment Group, a conglomerate with a strong presence in agribusiness, finance, and manufacturing. Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in advancing Nigeria’s food sufficiency agenda and strengthening regional economic cooperation. He is also a former Senior Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he provided strategic advisory services across Africa. His new appointment marks a significant milestone in international finance and governance.

While, Amusan, who made history in 2022 by becoming the first Nigerian to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships, continues to set the pace in global track and field. She is the current world record holder in the 100m hurdles, having set a blistering time of 12.12 seconds at the 2022 championships in Oregon, USA. Her latest medal adds to a growing list of accolades that include gold medals at the African Championships, Commonwealth Games, and Diamond League titles.

Injury woes mount for PSG, Kvaratskhelia trains apart from squad

Published

on

Paris Saint-Germain’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia remains a doubt for the holders’ midweek Champions League game at home against Atalanta, with the forward training separately from his teammates on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old Georgian injured himself in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Lens but has not been included in the club’s official medical update, meaning his presence on Wednesday remains possible, according to a source close to the squad.

The reigning European champions’ sporting advisor, Luis Campos, had expressed his “optimism” about Kvaratskhelia’s participation on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Ballon d’Or favourite Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue, injured playing for France during the international break, are “continuing their treatment,” the club said, while Lucas Beraldo, injured against Lens, “remains in treatment due to a sprained ankle”.

Forward Lee Kang-in, who also came off against Lens, trained without any apparent discomfort.

He clocked 48.37 seconds, a display that marked him out as one of the athletes to watch as the competition progresses.

The 48.37s run combined speed with technical poise over the barriers, as Nathaniel maintained a smooth, powerful rhythm from the gun to the line.

American Caleb Dean chased home Nathaniel in the same heat, crossing the line in 48.67s, while Brazil’s Francisco Dos Reis Viana posted a personal best of 48.69s to take third.

Nathaniel’s heat victory represents a major step in his career and boosts his medal hopes should he carry the form into the later rounds.

His NR currently ranks him fifth in the world, making him a top challenger for a medal in Tokyo.

If successful, it will make him Nigeria’s first medallist in the event in history.

Amusan wins silver at World Athletics Championships

Published

on

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has won silver in the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday, finishing behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who stunned the field to take gold in a national record.

Kambundji, 23, stormed to victory in 12.24s, eclipsing her previous best to secure Switzerland’s first-ever world title in the event.

Amusan, the 2022 champion and world record holder, followed closely in 12.29s to earn Nigeria’s 12th medal in World Championships history.

The bronze went to American Grace Stark, who crossed in 12.34s, while her compatriot Masai Russell placed fourth in 12.44s after a sluggish reaction time of 0.240, the slowest in the field.

Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska equalled her season’s best with 12.49s for fifth, just edging Bahamian Devynne Charlton who clocked the same time. Jamaica’s Danielle Williams, the 2023 world champion, finished seventh in 12.53s, and Nadine Visser of the Netherlands completed the line-up in eighth with 12.56s.

Amusan had earlier looked in commanding form in the semi-final, winning her race in 12.36s ahead of Visser and Skrzyszowska to set up hopes of retaining her crown. But in the final, despite a strong start, she was unable to match Kambundji’s late surge.

The result means Amusan, 28, adds another silver medal to Nigeria’s tally at the World Championships, following her historic gold in Eugene in 2022 when she set the world record of 12.12s.
