Priestess of the Olumo Deities, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria.
Chief Sinatu Aduke Sanni, widely known as “Iya Orisha Olumo,” is a revered priestess associated with the sacred Olumo Rock in Abeokuta. Oral traditions suggest she was born around 1885, though this claim has not been independently verified. Her reputed longevity has made her a figure of great cultural fascination, even as documentary evidence remains limited.
Olumo Rock holds enduring significance in Egba history. In the 19th century, during inter-tribal and Dahomean wars, the Egba people sought refuge within its caves, using the rock as a natural fortress and symbol of resilience.
Chief Sinatu is traditionally recognized as a key ritual officiant in Egba kingship ceremonies. Oral accounts state that she has reportedly witnessed the coronation of four Alakes of Egbaland since 1898, handing sacred “leaves of life” to the kingmakers as part of the enthronement rites.
She is also reported to be sought by devotees for prayers, divination, and intercession in matters relating to fertility, livelihood, and health. Within her spiritual role, she venerates deities such as Igun, Obaluaye, Sango, and Ogun.
