What Is the Essence of Having Money If You Cannot Help the Needy In Your Family And Those Around You ?

Money can provide comfort, security, and opportunities, but wealth should not make us blind to the needs of the people around us. If God has blessed us with enough, we should also have compassion for family members, neighbours, and others who are genuinely in need.

The true value of what we possess is not only measured by how much we can accumulate, but also by how much good we can do with it. Helping someone in need can be an expression of love, kindness, and gratitude to God.

The Bible teaches us:

“But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?”
— 1 John 3:17, KJV

Having money while refusing to help someone who genuinely needs assistance should make us examine our hearts. Wealth without compassion can become meaningless.

Jesus also said:

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
— Acts 20:35, KJV

We are not blessed merely to consume everything on ourselves. God expects us to use what He has given us wisely and generously.
The Bible further says:

“He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.”
— Proverbs 19:17, KJV

This does not mean we must give beyond our ability or allow people to take advantage of us. Rather, it reminds us that genuine generosity and compassion matter to God.

We should also remember the instruction:

“Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.”
— Romans 12:13, KJV

And:

“He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.”
— Proverbs 22:9, KJV

The Question We Should Ask Ourselves

What is the essence of having money if we cannot use some of what we have to bring relief to someone who is genuinely struggling?

What is the benefit of building wealth while our own family members suffer unnecessarily, when we have the ability to help?

Money is a tool. It can build a house, but it cannot build love. It can buy food, but it cannot create compassion. It can provide comfort, but it cannot give life meaning by itself.

True wealth is not simply having more—it is having enough to share and a heart willing to care.

Let us therefore use our blessings wisely. Help when you can. Give with wisdom. Support those who genuinely need assistance. And never become so wealthy that you forget the people who stood by you when you had nothing.

“He that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.”
— Proverbs 14:21, KJV

May God give us not only the blessing of having resources, but also the wisdom, humility, and compassion to use those resources to bless others.
