A Message About Respect in Marriage

Published

on

A wife may show great respect to her pastor in church, but true Christian character should also be reflected in how she treats her husband at home. Kneeling before a pastor is not wrong when done as an expression of humility or prayer, but respect for spiritual leaders should never become an excuse for dishonouring one’s spouse.

Marriage requires love, respect, humility, patience, and understanding. A wife should not speak harshly to her husband, belittle him, or treat him with contempt while showing kindness and honour to others. Likewise, a husband is commanded to love his wife sacrificially and treat her with understanding.

Ephesians 5:22 (KJV)

“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.”

Ephesians 5:33 (KJV)

“Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.”

Colossians 3:18 (KJV)

“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.”

1 Peter 3:1–2 (KJV)

“Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.”

Proverbs 15:1 (KJV)

“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”

A Lesson to Remember

Respect should not be reserved for the church; it should also be demonstrated at home. Your pastor deserves honour as a servant of God, but your husband should not receive disrespect, insults, or humiliation behind closed doors.

At the same time, husbands must not use Scripture as a weapon against their wives. The Bible commands husbands to love their wives, not to dominate or mistreat them.

Ephesians 5:25 (KJV)

“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.”

A godly marriage is not built on competition over who deserves more respect. It is built when both husband and wife honour God, love one another, speak with kindness, and fulfil their responsibilities toward each other.
