Several of football’s most accomplished coaches are reportedly available for new opportunities this summer, with former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola topping a list of high-profile names expected to attract interest from clubs and national teams.
Guardiola, regarded as one of the most successful managers of the modern era, leads the rankings after ending his trophy-laden spell at Manchester City. While the Spaniard is expected to take time away from management, he has already been linked with several high-profile vacancies across Europe and in international football.
Former Napoli, Chelsea and Juventus boss Antonio Conte is ranked second. The Italian, renowned for delivering immediate success wherever he has managed, remains one of the most sought-after coaches despite speculation linking him with a return to international management.
Didier Deschamps, who recently concluded his long tenure as France head coach, is third on the list. The World Cup-winning manager is expected to be a strong contender for any major coaching role should he decide to return to club football.
Dutch coach Arne Slot occupies fourth place, while former Flamengo manager Filipe Luis completes the top five after an impressive start to his coaching career that included multiple domestic and continental titles in Brazil.
Germany national team coach Julian Nagelsmann is ranked sixth despite mixed fortunes in recent international tournaments. Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is seventh after stepping away from the Premier League club, with ex-Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez eighth as he continues to weigh up his next move.
Former Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank is ninth, while Thiago Motta rounds off the top 10. Although his spell at Juventus ended disappointingly, the Italian is still regarded as one of Europe’s promising young coaches following his impressive work at Bologna.
With several major clubs expected to make managerial changes in the coming months, the availability of such experienced and accomplished coaches is likely to fuel speculation throughout the transfer window and beyond.

The Confederation of African Football has unanimously endorsed FIFA’s joint statement acknowledging mistakes in the handling of the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise, while reaffirming its commitment to governance, transparency and due process.
The resolution was reached at a meeting of the CAF Executive Committee, which also unanimously reaffirmed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
FIFA’s FFE controversy
PUNCH Online reports that FIFA unveiled the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise on July 28, 2026, as a new FIFA-owned commercial subsidiary to manage its commercial and event operations, including the World Cup, and to raise $4.2 billion by selling minority stakes to investors.
FIFA said the initiative was designed to increase funding for football development for its 211 member associations, but it was later withdrawn after criticism of the consultation process.
It drew criticism after concerns that FIFA’s Council and member associations were not adequately consulted during its development.
Meanwhile, FIFA apologised on August 6, 2026, after acknowledging that mistakes were made in how the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise was presented.
In a joint statement, Infantino and FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström said the FIFA Council and member associations should have been more involved in the process, withdrew the proposal, and announced a review while maintaining that all actions complied with FIFA’s regulatory framework.
In a statement issued on Thursday, CAF said it had endorsed the “Joint Update” by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström on the FIFA Forward Enterprise.
According to CAF, the continental football body took note of FIFA’s admission that mistakes were made during the process leading to the proposed establishment of the FIFA Forward Enterprise.
The statement quoted FIFA as saying, “We acknowledge mistakes were made in the process of the proposed establishment of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (‘FFE’).
“It was certainly not the intention for the FIFA Council and FIFA Member Associations to feel excluded from the process and it should have been handled differently. We sincerely apologise for these errors and commit to them not happening again.”
It further quoted FIFA as saying, “With this in mind, we will conduct a necessary review, and a report will be presented to the FIFA Council at its next scheduled meeting.
“Furthermore as already known, the proposal which would have been subject to the approval of the FIFA Member Associations and the FIFA Council, is now off the table.”
FIFA added, “There are always lessons to be learned, and we will continue to improve our processes in light of this experience.
“In this instance however, it is important to stress that although mistakes were made, everything that was done, was done in full compliance with the FIFA Regulatory Framework.”
CAF welcomes FIFA’s position
Reacting, CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the continental football body welcomed FIFA’s position and remained committed to governance and transparency.

Motsepe said, “CAF welcomes and endorses the ‘Joint Update’ by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Secretary General Mattias Grafström. CAF will continue to focus on making African Football amongst the best in the world and is reaffirming its commitment to adhering to global governance, transparency and auditing best practices.”
He added, “For us in Africa, adherence to governance, due process and transparency is crucial and non-negotiable, as this is the practice and conduct we expect from our governments, business and other institutions and organisations. This is also the conduct that is expected from CAF.”
The CAF president further stated, “We are committed to continue working together with FIFA, its Member Associations, other Football Confederations and stakeholders to safeguard and adhere to governance, due process, and transparency global best practices and to contribute to the development and growth of Football worldwide.”
On CAF’s priorities, Motsepe said, “CAF will also continue to focus on developing our boys and girls football players, coaches and trainers, the National Teams of our 54 Member Associations and the amateur and professional leagues on the African Continent.”
He continued, “Good progress is being made in discussions with our current and new sponsors, partners and investors to ensure that CAF continues to be financially self-supporting and independent and that stadiums and other Football infrastructure is constructed and upgraded.”
CAF backs Infantino, FIFA
Motsepe also said, “Progress is also being made in the preparations for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (‘AFCON’) Kenya Tanzania Uganda (‘PAMOJA’) and other CAF Competitions.”
CAF also announced that its Executive Committee unanimously reaffirmed support for Infantino and thanked him for his continued backing of African football.
The committee also thanked Infantino, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström and the FIFA administration “for organising a very successful FIFA World Cup 2026.”
CAF further stated that the quality of football at the ongoing TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 in Morocco “is very high” and described the tournament as “a huge success.”
Former Youth and Sports Minister, Jim Nwobodo, and Dutch coach Johannes “Bonfrère” Jo have offered contrasting accounts of the circumstances surrounding the coach’s reward and the alleged missing medal, 30 years after leading Nigeria’s Dream Team to Olympic football gold at Atlanta ’96, The PUNCH reports.
Nwobodo, who served as the first executive Governor of Anambra State between 1979 and 1983, was appointed Minister of Youth and Sports in 1995 during the military administration of the late General Sani Abacha and was in charge when Nigeria achieved its historic success at the 1996 Olympic Games.
The Dream Team defeated Argentina 3-2 in the final of the men’s football event on August 3, 1996, becoming the first African country to win Olympic football gold. A day earlier, Chioma Ajunwa had become the first Nigerian to win an individual Olympic gold medal, winning the women’s long jump.
Marking the 30th anniversary of Nigeria’s historic Atlanta 1996 Olympic triumph, the 80-year-old Dutchman told The PUNCH he remains disappointed that the Nigerian government has yet to recognise or reward his contribution to one of the nation’s greatest sporting achievements. Bonfrère also revealed that the gold medal he received after leading the Dream Team to Olympic glory was stolen, claiming it disappeared while in the custody of a team official.
Reacting to the Dutch’s allegation, Nwobodo said Abacha fulfilled the government’s promises to the victorious team and their coach, including the allocation of land.
“After beating Argentina in that historical final, Abacha fulfilled the promise. If there was any delay, it must have been from the civil service,” Nwobodo told The PUNCH.
“Abacha said they should be given lands anywhere they wanted and they were all given, including the coach, Bonfrere Jo. That was the golden era of our football and it was called the Dream Team.”
However, Bonfrere Jo, in an interview with The PUNCH, had disputed Nwobodo’s account, insisting that he did not receive the reward promised to him and that his Olympic gold medal was also taken away.
Furthermore, Nwobodo said he was unaware of any complaint from Bonfrere Jo during his tenure as minister.
“Not when I was there. Nobody would have done that if I knew. I couldn’t have allowed it. It was a golden period of our football, and how can I allow somebody who made it possible to be cheated? Something must be wrong,” Nwobodo told our correspondent.
“He did not complain. If he had, I would have solved it. If Bonfrere Jo had complained to me about the fact that they refused to give him his promise, I would have acted fast.
“I didn’t know about his medal either. How can someone take his medal and I would keep quiet? I would not do that. If I knew, I would have acted immediately. He never told me.”
But Bonfrere, in another chat with The PUNCH on Wednesday, maintained that he made several attempts to get attention without success.
“I have phoned and written to government people and I have been to the Government House two or three times with some other chief, but he didn’t have time to see me.
“I was there two times in one day at the Government House. I have done many things to contact somebody but didn’t get any reply. And he knows. He was one of the officials who stopped me from going up with my players,” the Dutchman said.
Former Nigeria defender and member of the 1996 gold-winning team, Taribo West, also claimed in a 2023 interview with The PUNCH that the land promised to Bonfrere Jo had been hijacked.
“The Bonfrere land gift in Lekki Phase 3 was hijacked, and as I speak with you, we are still struggling to make sure the land is given back to him.
“It is only in Nigeria that you labour for something but you won’t be allowed to enjoy the fruits. We have nothing to show for the tournaments we went to, the only thing we get is criticisms in the media,” Taribo said.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after an emphatic 6-2 victory over Egypt in their final Group C match on Wednesday.
The defending champions entered the match needing a convincing win to keep their hopes of progressing alive following an opening defeat to Malawi and a hard-fought victory over Zambia.
The result ensured Nigeria advanced to the knockout stage in pursuit of a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.

Defending champions Nigeria produced their most convincing performance of the tournament on Wednesday, thrashing Egypt 6-2 to book a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Falcons, who entered the final Group C match under pressure following a shock opening defeat to Malawi and a narrow victory over Zambia, responded with an emphatic display at the Rabat Olympic Stadium to secure qualification alongside Malawi.
Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 21st minute before Gift Monday doubled Nigeria’s advantage in first-half stoppage time after being set up by Rinsola Babajide.
Egypt reduced the deficit through Nadine Ghazi’s penalty deep into added time, sending Nigeria into the break with a 2-1 lead.
Nigeria regained complete control after the restart.
Babajide provided her second assist of the night for Uchenna Kanu to make it 3-1 in the 57th minute, while Christy Ucheibe converted another penalty in the 81st minute.
