Ademola Lookman will face heavy sanctions from Atalanta after embarking on a two-week training strike in a bid to force through his desired move to Inter, a transfer that ultimately collapsed, with talks between player and club now scheduled following his return to Zingonia.
The Nigerian forward resurfaced at Atalanta’s training headquarters, where he met with CEO Antonio Percassi to discuss his future after Inter formally withdrew their interest according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“The Nigerian forward has resurfaced at Atalanta’s headquarters in Zingonia,” the outlet reported, confirming that the highly anticipated move to Inter has now collapsed beyond repair.
The saga had dragged on for weeks, with Inter and Atalanta locked in tense negotiations.
Inter had already agreed personal terms with Lookman, offering him a five-year deal, but CEO Percassi stood firm, insisting that while he had promised to allow the player to leave in 2025, he would not sanction a sale to another Italian club.
This position infuriated Lookman, who accused the club of breaking their word. In protest, he staged a two-week strike, refusing to attend training or present a medical certificate, while also deleting all Atalanta-related photos from his social media accounts.
Atalanta, however, refused to bow to pressure and rejected Inter’s latest €45m bid. That prompted the Nerazzurri to walk away from the deal, with sporting director Piero Ausilio and president Beppe Marotta opting to shift focus to other areas of the squad.
“Negotiations with Atalanta are completely frozen,” transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported, confirming that Inter had told Lookman’s representatives the deal was “OFF.”
Lookman’s tactics left Atalanta deeply unimpressed. La Gazzetta dello Sport noted, “Lookman complicated matters further by going missing in recent weeks without informing the club or presenting a medical certificate.”
“Atalanta kept a low profile during his absence, despite Lookman removing Atalanta photos from his social media and openly requesting a transfer,” the paper added. But the Bergamo side are now reportedly preparing to take disciplinary action.
“They will not let it slide. Sanctions are coming,” La Gazzetta stated.
“The club will fine him for failing to notify his absence and dock his wages for the days he missed at Zingonia, applying the punishment at a time of their choosing.”
Calciomercato further reported that Lookman will be required to issue a public apology as part of the disciplinary process.
Despite the tension, Atalanta may choose not to push their star too far. Head coach Ivan Juric has privately expressed concerns about losing too much firepower after the shock sale of Mateo Retegui, Serie A’s top scorer last season.
Juric reportedly warned that the team would “lose 90 per cent of their goals” if Lookman were also allowed to leave.
This has left both Atalanta and Lookman in a delicate position, balancing discipline with pragmatism as the club cannot afford to diminish his market value or while he cannot also leave himself unprepared ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in December. As such, a reintegration plan remains on the table, with the possibility of restoring him to the starting XI once disciplinary matters are settled.
A former non-league footballer, Ibrahim Thomas, whose career took him across dozens of clubs and several countries, has encouraged young players to embrace opportunities to play abroad, describing the experience as one of the most rewarding parts of his journey.
As reported by BBC Sport on Friday, Thomas, who represented clubs including Shaw Lane, Stafford Rangers, Frickley Athletic and Mickleover, spent the longest spell of his career during his second stint at Brighouse Town between 2020 and 2023.
Despite his extensive travels, he admits he has never kept track of the many destinations his football career has taken him.
“Not at all. There’s definitely been too many to count,” Thomas said.
The well-travelled defender reflected on a career that saw him play in England, Belgium, Canada and the United States.
While he acknowledged that some of his moves were motivated by better financial opportunities rather than career progression, he believes the experience of working under different coaches and adapting to different styles of football was invaluable.
“It’s been a good experience but it could have been better. I moved up or went sideways for more money,” he said.
“But playing in different countries was a great experience and I would encourage all young players to go and experience that if they get a chance.
“I worked under different coaches with different ideas and philosophies.”
Thomas also revealed that his career nearly came to an end in 2013 after a serious groin injury.
While working in a call centre in Rotherham, he even considered joining the army before receiving an opportunity to revive his playing career with Thunder Bay Chill in Ontario, Canada.
Earlier in his career at Stocksbridge Park Steels, Thomas played against Jamie Vardy during the striker’s time at Halifax Town, before Vardy went on to represent England and win the Premier League with Leicester City in the 2015-16 season.

Germany national team coach Julian Nagelsmann is ranked sixth despite mixed fortunes in recent international tournaments. Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is seventh after stepping away from the Premier League club, with ex-Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez eighth as he continues to weigh up his next move.
Former Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank is ninth, while Thiago Motta rounds off the top 10. Although his spell at Juventus ended disappointingly, the Italian is still regarded as one of Europe’s promising young coaches following his impressive work at Bologna.
With several major clubs expected to make managerial changes in the coming months, the availability of such experienced and accomplished coaches is likely to fuel speculation throughout the transfer window and beyond.

The Confederation of African Football has unanimously endorsed FIFA’s joint statement acknowledging mistakes in the handling of the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise, while reaffirming its commitment to governance, transparency and due process.
The resolution was reached at a meeting of the CAF Executive Committee, which also unanimously reaffirmed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
FIFA’s FFE controversy
PUNCH Online reports that FIFA unveiled the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise on July 28, 2026, as a new FIFA-owned commercial subsidiary to manage its commercial and event operations, including the World Cup, and to raise $4.2 billion by selling minority stakes to investors.
FIFA said the initiative was designed to increase funding for football development for its 211 member associations, but it was later withdrawn after criticism of the consultation process.
It drew criticism after concerns that FIFA’s Council and member associations were not adequately consulted during its development.
Meanwhile, FIFA apologised on August 6, 2026, after acknowledging that mistakes were made in how the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise was presented.
In a joint statement, Infantino and FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström said the FIFA Council and member associations should have been more involved in the process, withdrew the proposal, and announced a review while maintaining that all actions complied with FIFA’s regulatory framework.
In a statement issued on Thursday, CAF said it had endorsed the “Joint Update” by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström on the FIFA Forward Enterprise.
According to CAF, the continental football body took note of FIFA’s admission that mistakes were made during the process leading to the proposed establishment of the FIFA Forward Enterprise.
The statement quoted FIFA as saying, “We acknowledge mistakes were made in the process of the proposed establishment of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (‘FFE’).
“It was certainly not the intention for the FIFA Council and FIFA Member Associations to feel excluded from the process and it should have been handled differently. We sincerely apologise for these errors and commit to them not happening again.”
It further quoted FIFA as saying, “With this in mind, we will conduct a necessary review, and a report will be presented to the FIFA Council at its next scheduled meeting.
“Furthermore as already known, the proposal which would have been subject to the approval of the FIFA Member Associations and the FIFA Council, is now off the table.”
FIFA added, “There are always lessons to be learned, and we will continue to improve our processes in light of this experience.
“In this instance however, it is important to stress that although mistakes were made, everything that was done, was done in full compliance with the FIFA Regulatory Framework.”
CAF welcomes FIFA’s position
Reacting, CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the continental football body welcomed FIFA’s position and remained committed to governance and transparency.

Motsepe said, “CAF welcomes and endorses the ‘Joint Update’ by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Secretary General Mattias Grafström. CAF will continue to focus on making African Football amongst the best in the world and is reaffirming its commitment to adhering to global governance, transparency and auditing best practices.”
He added, “For us in Africa, adherence to governance, due process and transparency is crucial and non-negotiable, as this is the practice and conduct we expect from our governments, business and other institutions and organisations. This is also the conduct that is expected from CAF.”
The CAF president further stated, “We are committed to continue working together with FIFA, its Member Associations, other Football Confederations and stakeholders to safeguard and adhere to governance, due process, and transparency global best practices and to contribute to the development and growth of Football worldwide.”
On CAF’s priorities, Motsepe said, “CAF will also continue to focus on developing our boys and girls football players, coaches and trainers, the National Teams of our 54 Member Associations and the amateur and professional leagues on the African Continent.”
He continued, “Good progress is being made in discussions with our current and new sponsors, partners and investors to ensure that CAF continues to be financially self-supporting and independent and that stadiums and other Football infrastructure is constructed and upgraded.”
CAF backs Infantino, FIFA
Motsepe also said, “Progress is also being made in the preparations for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (‘AFCON’) Kenya Tanzania Uganda (‘PAMOJA’) and other CAF Competitions.”
CAF also announced that its Executive Committee unanimously reaffirmed support for Infantino and thanked him for his continued backing of African football.
The committee also thanked Infantino, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström and the FIFA administration “for organising a very successful FIFA World Cup 2026.”
CAF further stated that the quality of football at the ongoing TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 in Morocco “is very high” and described the tournament as “a huge success.”
