Royal row: Alaafin may publish Supreme Court ruling after 48-hour ultimatum

Following the expiration of the 48-hour ultimatum issued to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, indications emerged on Wednesday that the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, was preparing to release the Supreme Court ruling, which, according to it, affirms the Alaafin’s exclusive right to confer chieftaincy titles covering the entire Yorubaland.

This development came on the heels of a series of meetings held by the Alaafin with palace chiefs in Oyo town on Wednesday to deliberate on the next steps.

On Monday, the Alaafin’s media aide, Mr Bode Durojaiye, had demanded that the Ooni revoke the Okanlomo of Yorubaland title conferred on businessman, Dotun Sanusi, within 48 hours.

He also cited the Supreme Court ruling in defence of the Alaafin’s position.

The Alaafin accused the Ooni of exceeding his authority and breaching the apex court’s pronouncement on who could confer titles with the “Yorubaland” designation.

He argued that the Ooni’s powers were limited to the former Oranmiyan Local Government Area, now split into Ife Central, Ife North and Ife South.

With the ultimatum expiring on Wednesday, multiple palace sources told The PUNCH that the Alaafin might unveil the Supreme Court judgment to reinforce his position as the paramount ruler of Yorubaland.

On social media, many Nigerians speculated about the “consequences” hinted at by the palace, even as some urged the Alaafin to caution his aide and withdraw the ultimatum.

Amid the uncertainty, the Atóbaáse of Yorubaland, Babajide Agunbiade, said the Alaafin retained historical and political supremacy among the Yoruba. He advised the monarch to consider legal action to reassert his authority.

In an open letter, Agunbiade stressed that while the Ooni remained revered as custodian of Yoruba spiritual heritage, the Alaafin’s role as paramount ruler was indisputable.

He traced the Alaafin’s authority to the Oyo Empire, whose influence once extended across present-day Yorubaland, Dahomey, Offa and parts of Kogi State.

Agunbiade described recent actions by the Ooni of Ife as “an attempt to undermine the authority and tradition of the Alaafin.”

Agunbiade wrote, “As the paramount ruler of the Oyo Empire, which historically spanned vast territories including present-day Yorubaland, Dahomey, Offa, and parts of Kogi State, the Alaafin’s jurisdiction and authority are rooted in tradition and law.

The issuance of Yoruba-wide titles is a prerogative reserved for the Alaafin, as the

Emperor and ruler of the Yoruba people.

“This position has been reinforced through various judicial pronouncements, culminating in affirmation by the Supreme Court of Nigeria. The Alaafin’s role as the paramount authority in Yoruba land is not merely a matter of tradition but is also grounded in legal precedent. This is not just a matter of personal prestige but also of preserving the cultural heritage and traditions of the Yoruba people.”

But a legal practitioner, Pelumi Olajengbesi, countered that no Supreme Court judgment or constitutional instrument granted the Alaafin exclusive pan-Yoruba authority.

He said, “With the greatest respect, the oft-cited Supreme Court decision that purportedly vested Alaafin authority now exaggerated must be properly confined to its facts. Judicial pronouncements are case-specific, and no ratio decidendi of that Court has ever declared the Alaafin the sole custodian of Yoruba legitimacy. No statute in any Yoruba-speaking state vests exclusive authority in the Alaafin to confer titles of pan-Yoruba significance, and the Court cannot by judicial fiat extend such jurisdiction.

“The law is clear, history is unambiguous, and jurisprudence is settled. The Ooni of Ife has not usurped power; he has exercised it intra vires—lawfully, historically, and culturally. He remains the ancestral father of the Yoruba nation, and his competence to confer honours symbolic of unity is beyond reproach.”

Olajengbesi urged that the Alaafin be properly advised, noting that Ile-Ife was universally recognised as the cradle of the Yoruba.

“Every student of Yoruba history knows, tradition and scholarship unanimously affirm Ile-Ife as the cradle of existence of the Yoruba people, the primordial seat where Oduduwa, progenitor of the race, laid the foundation of legitimacy from which all kingdoms, including Oyo, derived their authority.

“As a lawyer, I find no legal, historical, or moral defect in the Ooni’s conferment of the title Okanlomo of Oodua on Chief Dotun Sanusi, an illustrious Yoruba son. On the contrary, it is a timely reminder that while empires rise and fall, the foundation of Yoruba identity, the Ile-Ife and the Ooni, remain timeless, indivisible, and unimpeachable. The Alaafin of Oyo should be properly advised,” Olajengbesi added.

Meanwhile, more groups waded into the dispute between Oba Owoade and Oba Ogunwusi, urging restraint and caution against inflammatory remarks that could derail ongoing peace efforts by socio-cultural, political and religious leaders.

The fresh row had erupted on Monday after the Alaafin faulted the Ooni’s conferment of the Okanlomo of Yorubaland title on Sanusi.

Prominent Yoruba figures, including the Aare Ona Kakanfo, Iba Gani Adams; Ifa scholar, Prof. Wande Abimbola; and the Yoruba Council of Elders, had on Tuesday called for restraint and offered to mediate.

On Wednesday, the Yoruba Council Worldwide described the feud as a matter requiring “calm, reflection and unity.”

Its publicity secretary, Charles Adeyemi, urged Yoruba elders, statesmen and culture custodians to mediate constructively and preserve the dignity of both stools.

The council also appealed to citizens, especially youths, on social media, to avoid inflaming tensions.

The YCW statement read, “We also appeal directly to Yoruba sons and daughters, especially the vibrant voices on social media: let us refrain from speaking ill of our monarchs. Instead, let us be advocates of peace, understanding, and reconciliation. Our words carry weight, and in times of tension, they should be used to build bridges, not walls.

“The Alaafin and the Ooni represent eternal symbols of Yoruba civilisation. Their strength and unity are not only crucial for cultural preservation but also for the collective dignity of the Yoruba nation before the world.

“We therefore call for a truce, apology and immediate retraction of the 48-hour ultimatum issued by Bode Durojaiye, spokesman to the Alaafin of Oyo, while we await the convocation of the Yoruba Obas Conference to allow for a peace pact in Yorubaland.”

Similarly, the President, Traditional Region Worshippers Association in Osun State, Dr Oluseyi Atanda, on Wednesday, called on Nigerians to stop using social media platforms to fuel the disagreement between the two monarchs.

Atanda made this call in Osogbo, during events organised to mark the 19th annual Isese Celebrations in the state.

He disclosed that traditionalists in Osun and Oyo States were already mediating and working towards an amicable resolution of the issues.

Atanda said, “It is a warning to all of us that once we don’t do things in the right way, things are likely to fall apart. It is good that it is happening at an early stage. On our part in Osun, the elders are gathering together and trying to make amends.

“The message has also gotten to the leaders in Oyo, too. We have to wade in for everybody to sheath their swords. It is because of social media that we all think this is a new thing.”

Atanda added that clashes between the two stools were not unprecedented, recalling disputes between the late Ooni, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, and the late Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.

He warned bloggers against “fueling fire with petrol,” insisting the row would pass.

“This is not new. It is just because there is social media now. I think we also need to stop this idea of trying to fuel the fire with petrol in order for us to make sales on our blogs. We are all also contributing to the trend that is on the ground now, but I know it will pass,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Think Yoruba First Ogo Adulawo Socio-Cultural Association condemned attempts to distort Yoruba history.

At a press conference in Lagos, its lead legal adviser, Sanwo Oluwatobi, described such claims as “cultural defamation, historical falsification and intellectual misrepresentation.”

Brutalised teenager rehabilitated by Soludo’s wife set for university

Master Chimkamnayo Olisaemeka, a teenager who was rescued from severe assault by his guardians in 2022 through the intervention of the Anambra State First Lady, Nonye Soludo, is set to begin his university education after undergoing full rehabilitation.

Soludo said that since Chimkamnayo’s rescue from severe abuse and neglect, he has remained under her care, receiving medical treatment, educational support, guidance, and the opportunity to rebuild his life.

The Anambra first lady, who spoke in Awka on Wednesday, said the boy was preparing to enter the university and described his story as one of triumph rather than mere survival.

She explained that Chimkamnayo’s story broke the hearts of many people four years ago, and his journey through rehabilitation should serve as a reminder that difficult circumstances do not determine a child’s future.

She said, “Four years ago, precisely in July 2022, Chimkamnayo Olisaemeka’s story broke the hearts of many Ndi Anambra. Rescued from a life of severe abuse and neglect from his uncle and wife, he arrived with wounds that went far beyond the physical. At the time, many saw a hurting child. Today, we see a resilient young man standing on the threshold of a brighter future.

“Since his rescue, Chimkamnayo has remained under our care, receiving medical attention, educational support, guidance, and the opportunity to rediscover his worth. What once seemed like a story defined by pain has become a powerful testimony of healing, hope, and transformation. Today, he is preparing to enter the university, and I am delighted to reaffirm my commitment to supporting his education to whatever level he chooses to attain.

Nigerians must not stay silent on insecurity, Davido tells Rarara

Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has called on prominent Hausa singer, Dauda Rarara, to openly speak out against the country’s worsening insecurity, insisting that silence and political bias only deepen national challenges.

The controversy stems from Davido’s appearance at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown Concert in Los Angeles on June 10, where he wore a customised jacket bearing the inscription “Bring Them Home” alongside the names of over 40 schoolchildren and teachers abducted on May 15 in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

In a video posted on his verified Facebook page, Rarara described Davido’s action as “barbaric,” arguing that it risked damaging Nigeria’s international image and alleging that the issue was being politicised.

“I do not usually reply or react to issues like this, but what Davido did was barbaric. In my opinion, Davido and those who share his way of thinking are only behaving foolishly.

“How can you promote Ansaru terrorists or insecurity-related issues to the whole world? How can you take a sensitive national security issue and project it to the world in a way that could damage the country’s image? What exactly do you stand to gain from doing that?

“Davido took the names of abducted schoolchildren in Oyo State, wrote them on the Nigerian flag and displayed it in America. What was the purpose? What did he hope to achieve? Or was it because he had turned the matter into politics?”

Rarara further questioned the intent behind Davido’s move, suggesting it was linked to political interests and warning against the internationalisation of sensitive security matters.

“Is it because his uncle is contesting an election on Accord Party and Tinubu is in APC? Is that why insecurity must become a campaign tool? Anyone who campaigns with insecurity is insane, because he does not fully understand what it entails.

“What Davido did is similar to removing his own mother’s wrapper, taking a photograph of her and travelling to America to display it for the whole world to see, only to ask people to help cover her up again. What kind of thinking is that?

“Insecurity is not something people should casually jump into. There are facts and circumstances that ordinary members of the public may not know. Before speaking on such matters, one should understand the situation properly.

“Did Davido know the reason behind the abduction of those schoolchildren? Some terrorists were arrested. When efforts to secure their release failed, the kingpins kidnapped innocent people in an attempt to force the authorities to negotiate.

“The President and security agencies had vowed that the terrorists would not be released and that the children would be rescued. It was during this delicate period that Davido chose to embarrass us on a global stage.

“You cannot go to China and promote issues the authorities do not want promoted. The same applies in many other countries. There are limits. But some of our content creators continue to promote narratives that, in my opinion, end up helping terrorists.

“Some content creators do not understand the implications of what they are doing, while others do. Some are sponsored by politicians, while others are simply chasing engagement and followers.”

Reacting on X, Davido quoted Rarara’s post and replied, “Debidooo,” in what appeared to be a mocking reference to the pronunciation of his name.

Rarara responded with the phrase “Kashiga taitayinka,” a derogatory Hausa expression telling the Afrobeat star to come back to his senses.

Davido also fired back, saying, “Da ace kana da ilimi da na tsaya nayi magana dakai. Ama komai baka sani ba, sakarai kawai,” which translates as “If only you had knowledge, I would have stopped to speak with you. But you know nothing, just a fool,” according to a translation of his Hausa response.

In a follow-up statement shared in Hausa and later translated to English, Davido insisted that Nigerians must not remain silent in the face of insecurity, stressing that patriotism requires speaking out regardless of political affiliation.

He, “Da farko, duk wanda yake da kishin Najeriya ba zai yi shiru kan matsalar rashin tsaro da ke addabar ƙasa ba, kuma ba zai hana wasu bayyana damuwarsu a kai ba. Rashin tausayi da fifita son rai ko zama karen en siyasa , da fifita son rai fiye da muradun al’umma ba abin alfahari ba ne. Ka kasance mai kishin ƙasarka, ka daina fifita siyasa a kan gaskiya, sannan ka ji tsoron Allah a cikin duk abin da kake yi #kahuturarara which translates to “Damn it, every Nigerian should not stay silent about the insecurity plaguing the nation, nor should they prevent others from voicing their concerns openly.

He added that prioritising political interests over national welfare was harmful to the country’s progress.

“Showing bias and prioritizing personal or political interests, and putting personal desires above the community’s goals, is nothing to be proud of. Be a patriot for your country, stop prioritizing politics over the truth, and fear God in everything you do

NAF killed my husband, abandoned me with three children – Widow

Grace Joseph, the widow of the commercial bus driver, Joseph Okpe, who was allegedly beaten to death by the Nigerian Air Force officers along the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway in Lagos, has accused the military of abandoning her family, saying she has not heard from its representatives since they paid a condolence visit and promised support.

PUNCH Metro reports that the driver died a few hours after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of officers following a minor traffic incident involving their vehicle.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, confirmed that all officers involved had been detained and that the family had been visited.

“The Nigerian Air Force is aware of the reported incident and is deeply saddened by the loss of life,” Ejodame said.

“Upon receiving information on the matter, the personnel suspected to be involved were immediately taken into custody, and the case is currently under investigation by the appropriate civil and military authorities.

“The NAF has also extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and visited them to express sympathy and support during this difficult time,” the statement added.

However, in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Wednesday, the grieving mother of three said the Air Force had failed to fulfil the assurances given to her family during the condolence visit.

“He was the breadwinner. The Air Force officers came to visit us, and the way they spoke gave me hope. I was encouraged by what they told us.

“But after they left, everything changed. I have not heard from them again. My husband was the one feeding and taking care of the family, and now he is gone.

“When they came that day, they spoke in a way that made me happy. But after they left, they changed. I don’t know why. I have not seen them again, and I do not know the reason,” she said.

Speaking in a shaky voice, the mother of three said her children had continued to ask about their father.

“The children have been asking about their father, especially the youngest one. Since the day my husband died, he has been crying because he misses his father.

“My youngest child is five years old. My daughter is 10 years old, and my first child is 14 years old.”

She added that during the condolence visit, Air Force representatives handed her N200,000 to assist with feeding the children.

“They gave me N200,000 when they came. They said it was for me to use and feed the children. Since then, I have never received another call from them.

“I feel very sad about it. I really do.”

The bereaved widow appealed to the government to intervene and support the welfare and education of her children.

“What I want the government to do for me is to help me train my children and support their education. Their father was the one responsible for them and took care of all their needs.

“I want the government to take responsibility and help ensure that the children can continue their education and have a future.”

Recalling the events that led to her husband’s death, the widow said the tragedy came as a devastating shock to the family.

She said, “When the time came, I had to explain because it was shocking to me. I was so surprised because I never expected this kind of thing.

“On the day it happened, both of us left the house at the same time. I was going to visit one of my sisters, while my husband had gone to work.

“That night, I received a call after 8 p.m. The woman who called asked if I was Joseph’s wife. I said yes, and she told me that my husband had been involved in an accident. I was shocked.

“I immediately called my husband’s elder brother and informed him that someone had called to say my husband had been involved in an accident.

“My husband’s brother asked where I was, and I told him I was at home. I then went to my sister’s place.

“The caller told me to come with my family, so I went to my husband’s sister and brother in Oshodi. When I got there, I explained everything to them, and we started looking for a vehicle to take us to the hospital.

“At that time, it was already late, and we could not find transportation. People were unwilling to come out because of the late hour and fear of being stopped by the police.

“The caller told me my husband was at a hospital in Mushin. Later, the doctor’s phone number was sent to me, and I forwarded it to my brother.

“My husband’s brother and I began communicating with the doctor. We pleaded with him to take care of my husband because we could not get there immediately due to the late hour.

“About three to five minutes after we spoke with the doctor, he called back and told me that my husband had died.

“The following morning, I went to the hospital with some people who assisted my family and me. When I got there, I saw my husband lying on the bed.”
