“Charity begins at home” reminds us that kindness should first be demonstrated among the people closest to us. It is easy to appear caring toward strangers while neglecting our own parents, spouse, children, siblings, or neighbours.
True charity is not only about giving money. It includes love, forgiveness, encouragement, patience, support, sharing, and caring for those in need. The way we treat people in our own homes teaches others what genuine love looks like.
If there is someone in your family who is struggling, do not ignore them while trying to impress people outside. If you can help, help. If someone is hurting, encourage them. If there has been an offence, choose forgiveness. Let your home become the first place where people experience your kindness.
The Bible teaches:
“But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”
— 1 Timothy 5:8 (KJV)
Jesus also taught:
“Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
— Matthew 22:39 (KJV)
And:
“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
— Ephesians 4:32 (KJV)
Let your kindness start at home. Care for your family, support those around you, and extend that same love to others. A home filled with love and compassion can become a source of blessing to an entire community.
