Messi bows out with goal, two assists as Argentina beat Benin 3-0

Published

on

Lionel Messi ended his Argentina international career with a goal and two assists as the world champions defeated Benin 3-0 at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires on Tuesday night.

The match, played on October 6, marked Messi’s final appearance for Argentina after a 21-year international career.

Former Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr was in charge of Benin for the farewell fixture.

According to Inter Miami, Messi provided the assist for Nicolás Otamendi’s opener from a corner in the 48th minute before setting up Nico Paz for Argentina’s second goal in the 61st minute.

Messi then converted a penalty in the 71st minute to complete the 3-0 victory.

Inter Miami reported the match in a report published on October 6, 2026, saying Messi had been “directly involved in each of Argentina’s goals.”

The club described it as Messi’s “final international appearance” and said he finished the night with “a goal and a pair of assists.”

Reuters reported the match at 02:21 UTC on October 7, 2026, saying Messi had brought the curtain down on his international career in front of more than 85,000 spectators.

Speaking after the game, Messi said, according to Reuters: “It’s hard to talk.”

He added: “There are a lot of emotions, a lot of things going through my head.”

Reflecting on his Argentina career, Messi said: “It was a huge source of pride for me to wear this shirt all this time, more than 20 years.”

He also said: “Playing for Argentina is the most beautiful thing that can happen to you.”

Reuters reported that Messi finished his Argentina career as the country’s most-capped player with 208 appearances and its record goalscorer with 126 goals.

The match had been announced by FIFA as Messi’s farewell appearance for Argentina.

In a September 15, 2026 report, FIFA quoted Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia as saying: “We invited the world’s best player, our national-team icon, our captain Lionel Andres Messi, to have a deserved farewell here in Argentina.”

Before the match, Benin goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou told Spanish newspaper Marca that his team would not simply attend the occasion.

Marca published the interview at 04:33 CDT on October 5, 2026.

Asked about playing Messi in his final Argentina match, Dandjinou said: “This is football: eleven against eleven.”

He added: “We are not here to do tourism in Argentina, we are here to play and compete.”

Dandjinou also rejected the idea that Benin would allow Messi to score as part of the farewell.

In the same Marca interview, he said: “I am a goalkeeper, and my role is to stop shots.”

On whether he would try to save a Messi penalty even in the final minute, Dandjinou said: “If Messi takes it, I will try to stop it.”

He added: “Nobody has told us that we have to give him a goal.”

Benin defender Mohamed Tijani also spoke ahead of the match, telling C5N, according to Goal.com in a report published October 6, 2026: “We won’t be marking Messi.”

Tijani added: “We’ll just enjoy this match.”

Benin coach Rohr also spoke about the significance of facing Messi.

In an interview with Footy-Africa published October 6, 2026, Rohr said: “Yes, it’s a big honor for us and also for me like a coach to play this last game of Leo Messi in his national team.”

Rohr previously coached Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where he led the Super Eagles against Argentina.

The Argentina-Benin friendly therefore brought Rohr back into a match involving Messi eight years after the former Nigeria coach faced the Argentine star at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Argentina’s victory brought Messi’s international career to a close with 208 appearances and 126 goals for the national team.

Read how Kane won Ballon d’Or without World Cup, Champions League

Published

on

England captain and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, was announced as the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner on Monday.

He saw off stiff competition from second-placed Kylian Mbappe (France, Real Madrid) and the three-time winner of the Men’s Young Talent of the Year, Lamine Yamal (Spain, Barcelona).

Kane, 33, also emerged as the first English player to win the coveted individual football award in 25 years.

He became the fifth Englishman to win the Ballon d’Or: Stanley Matthews (1956), Bobby Charlton (1966), Kevin Keegan (1978 and 1979), and Michael Owen (2001) — alongside Scottish winner Denis Law (1964) and Northern Irish winner George Best (1968).

The ceremony took place at the London Palladium to mark the award’s 70th anniversary.

The award was presented by Brazilian great Ronaldo Nazário.

While receiving the award, Kane said, “I am almost speechless. Being here in London has made it extra special.

“Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I can imagine it was tough this year.

“[There are] some world-class players in the room tonight. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees tonight. [It is] an impressive showing of determination and what hard work can really achieve.”

According to BBC Sport late Monday, Kane scored 61 goals in 51 club matches last season, the most a Bayern player has ever scored in one campaign. Including England matches, it was 73 goals – plus eight assists – in 65 matches.

He also became the first Bayern player to win the Ballon d’Or since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981.

His side suffered a 6-5 aggregate defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in last season’s Champions League.

England also lost 2–1 to Argentina in their World Cup semi-final.

Yet, for a player who was placed 10th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or ranking, Kane has now been crowned the latest Ballon d’Or winner without winning either of football’s biggest prizes last season — the Champions League and World Cup.

This is only the fifth time in the past 20 years that the Ballon d’Or has not gone to a player who has won either the World Cup, the Champions League or a European Championship/Copa America – with Kane joining Messi (three times in 2010, 2012 & 2019) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2013), according to the report.

The England international, who spent over a decade at Tottenham since making his senior debut in 2011, before his transfer to Bayern in 2023, won two Bundesliga titles, two Super Cups and one DFB Pokal.

Kane hit a record-breaking form last season.

His 61 goals in all competitions for Bayern were 19 more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues managed.

“It was the most anyone has recorded since Cristiano Ronaldo also notched 61 for Real Madrid 11 years ago,” the report said.

Kane also emerged as the top scorer in the German domestic league with 36 goals – 17 clear of anyone else.

In the Champions League, he scored 14 goals, while he registered 10 goals in the German Cup.

The report added that “no player has ever scored so many goals in a season for Bayern, a club that has had legendary goalscorers like Gerd Muller, Rummenigge and more recently Robert Lewandowski in their ranks.

“Kane’s 12 goals for England last season – including six at the World Cup – take him up to a total of 73.

“Only one player in history from Europe’s top leagues has scored more in a season: Lionel Messi’s 82 for Barcelona and Argentina in 2011-12.”

Next on the list are Muller (72 in 1972-73), Cristiano Ronaldo (66 in both 2011-12 and 2014-15), former Brazil striker Ronaldo (66 in 1996-97), Erling Haaland (64 in 2022-23) and Luis Suarez (64 in 2015-16), the report added.

Commenting on the Three Lions’ captain’s achievement, England manager Thomas Tuchel said, “I ran out of superlatives to describe your performances a long time ago, but I’m delighted to see that you have now been formally recognised by the football world.

“To become the first Englishman to win this huge honour in 25 years makes it extra special, and we are lucky to have you as our leader.

“I know you will enjoy this moment with your loved ones and then get back to doing what you do best – scoring goals and winning football matches.”

Madrid play for La Liga, not Camp Nou wins — Mourinho

Published

on

José Mourinho insisted Real Madrid’s focus remains on the bigger picture after their 2-1 victory over Barcelona at the Camp Nou.

As reported by BBC Sport on Sunday, speaking after Kylian Mbappé’s late winner secured a dramatic Clásico triumph, the Real Madrid gaffer said, “In my view, Real Madrid do not play to win at the Camp Nou… Real Madrid play to win La Liga. This must be the mentality. We need to continue like this and don’t go over the moon after this win.

“We could win with luck, but we won with calmness and with all merit. It’s a very strong group. Everyone works very hard. Everyone was ready to win.

“The credit goes to the players. When you win, the credit goes to the players. But when you lose, the blame falls on you. And that’s why we see coaches being sacked from their positions every week.”

The Portuguese, who returned to Real 13 years after his first stint in charge this summer, has now won six and lost six El Clasicos.

He said, “I’ve learned that I have an extraordinary group, with the quality and mindset to play.

“In midfield, having a mix of talents gives us more than just having two players with similar characteristics. This mix of talents gives us balance when defending and quality when we go on the attack.

“We’ve beaten several teams by four or more goals, but this is Barca, and the players put on a great performance. We need to continue like this and don’t go over the moon after this win.”

Mourinho however warned that a slip-up in the next match would diminish the value of Sunday’s result.

The win closed the gap at the top of La Liga to three points.
