Osun poll: INEC adds SDP’s gov candidate Ajala to ballot

Published

on

The Independent National Electoral Commission has added the Social Democratic Party governorship candidate, Dr. Francis Ajala, and his running mate, Faseke Oladipo, to the ballot for the Osun State governorship election.

The election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

INEC said the decision followed a judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, delivered on July 22, 2026, in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/344/2026, involving the SDP, Ajala and the electoral commission.

According to the commission, the court ordered it to “forthwith recognise, accept, upload, process and publish” the name and particulars of Ajala as the SDP candidate for the election.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, the commission said the ballot papers were being reproduced to reflect the court-ordered inclusion.

The development brings the number of political parties contesting the election to 15.

INEC also said the result sheets for the election were being reproduced alongside the ballot papers to reflect the inclusion of the SDP candidate.

“The Commission wishes to inform the public that the reproduced ballot papers will arrive in Osun State on Thursday, 13th August 2026, and will, same day, be moved to Local Government Area offices across the State,” the statement said.

INEC said the distribution would be carried out in line with its standard procedure ahead of the election.

The commission further assured political parties, candidates and voters of its commitment to conducting a free, fair and credible election in Osun State.

Osun needs CEO, not an entertainer – Tinubu’s aide

Published

on

The Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, has disclosed his unwavering support for the All Progressives Congress’ candidate in the upcoming governorship election in Osun State, Bola Oyebamiji.

This is coming on the heels of a town hall meeting organised by Arise TV for candidates contesting the election.

Oyebamiji faces opposition from Najeem Salam of the African Democratic Congress and incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke, who is running on the platform of the Accord Party and vying for his second term in office.

The election is scheduled to be held on August 15, 2026.

Describing Oyebamiji’s profile and worthiness for the governor’s seat, Ajayi took to his X handle on Wednesday, saying the APC candidate, during the town hall meeting, “made the stronger case that he understands that job.”

In their separate interviews during the course of the townhall meeting, Adeleke spoke on his administration’s scorecard during his first four years in office, as Oyebamiji explained how he would transform the state across various developmental areas.

However, Temitope stated, “That is a useful way to look at the Osun election. The state is not recruiting an entertainer, a professional campaigner or a permanent opposition politician. It is recruiting a chief executive to manage a financially constrained public enterprise called Osun State. On the evidence of what I saw at the town hall, Oyebamiji made the stronger case that he understands that job.”

The presidential aide tweeted that “if the exercise is judged strictly on policy articulation, command of facts, fiscal realism and evidence of managerial competence, I will candidly say Oyebamiji came out ahead. He appeared to understand government as a management responsibility rather than merely a platform for political performance.

“His emphasis was on how public resources should be managed to lift people out of social and economic difficulty, rather than become instruments of personal or familial aggrandisement.”

Ajayi stated that owing to Oyebamiji’s experience as a former Commissioner for Finance under the administrations of ex-governors Rauf Aregbesola and Gboyega Oyetola, the APC candidate “presented himself as someone who has actually managed public finances rather than just speaking about them.”

The tweet read further, “In a state with a history of fiscal constraints, promising everything without convincingly explaining the financing is not social policy, but fiscal romanticism. Oyebamiji, by contrast, played to his professional strength. A former banker and finance commissioner, he demonstrated a firmer grasp of the numbers and the mechanics of government. He cited his stewardship of Osun State Investment Holdings, where he said he helped turn around the organisation and, in the process, build a substantial real estate portfolio in Lagos and Abuja.

“He also spoke about his tenure as Commissioner of Finance and the fiscal pressures the Aregbesola administration faced. More importantly, he presented himself as someone who has actually managed public finances rather than just speaking about them. He argued that under Oyetola, when he served as the state’s financial manager, the government met its obligations without fresh borrowing and left about N16 billion in the treasury for the incoming administration. Those claims can be independently verified.

“But that, in itself, is the point. A governorship election should be an audit of competing records, plans and managerial capacity, not a popularity contest between personalities. Oyebamiji made the most interesting argument of the townhall sessions when he essentially asked voters to imagine the three candidates sitting before a recruiter who had to choose one of them to manage a business. Looking at their qualifications, experience, temperament and understanding of finance, whom would the recruiter hire?”

Attack on predecessors, Salam’s promises lack clear funding plan

Ajayi lamented that rather than using the meeting “to make a compelling case for what his administration has achieved” and what he’s achieved in office, Adeleke “spent considerable time attacking former governors Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Gboyega Oyetola.”

He further described the governor’s outing at the meeting as “forceful and combative.”

“Political attacks may excite loyalists, but they are not substitutes for a convincing account of stewardship. This is particularly important because Adeleke is seeking a second term. A candidate asking voters for another four years should be able to make the election principally about his record, not the shortcomings of predecessors,” the tweet added.

He continued, “Najeem Salam was perhaps the most ambitious in his promises, but that was also his problem. His offer of free services and expansive government intervention sounded attractive, but there was insufficient attention to the harder question of how Osun would pay for them. If he became governor, he would become another Aregbesola in office with bogus programmes and unsustainable projects and throw Osun State into a fiscal cul-de-sac.”

Nigeria A Graveyard Of Abandoned Projects – ADC

Published

on

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has decried the high rate of abandoned projects across the country, attributing the development to alleged corruption and lack of political will by federal and state governments to complete projects initiated in the public interest.

The party said it would uphold the principle of institutional continuity by ensuring that changes in leadership or responsibilities do not result in the arbitrary abandonment, reversal or neglect of projects, policies and initiatives that serve the public interest, regardless of who initiated them.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, stated this yesterday at the unveiling of the Code of Conduct for candidates seeking elective positions on the platform of the party in the 2027 elections.

Abdullahi said the country had become a “graveyard of abandoned projects” because of corruption and political considerations, stressing that the ADC would adopt a different approach if elected into government.

“Nigeria is now a graveyard of abandoned projects due to monumental corruption at various tiers of government in the country.

“Our party will change that because every project initiated must be completed, and we shall not allow political favouritism or godfatherism in governance, where kickbacks will lead to the stoppage of projects that will benefit the average Nigerian,” he said.

In a joint statement issued by the National Chairman of the party, Senator David Mark, and National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, the party on the document titled ” The Orange Book” said the adoption of the document was a response to what it described as decades of corruption, weakened institutions and the erosion of public trust by elected officials and government representatives.

According to the statement, the principles contained in the document are intended to ensure that leaders elected on the ADC platform conduct themselves in accordance with the values of public service, accountability and responsible leadership.

The party leadership said its elected officials would be expected to adopt a different approach to governance, anchored on service, personal sacrifice and ethical leadership.

“We are not asking Nigerians to follow us blindly; we are calling them to stand with us shoulder to shoulder, as guardians of a new national covenant rooted in service and accountability,” the statement said.

The ADC leadership said the new code was also informed by growing public dissatisfaction with unfulfilled political promises, stressing that elected representatives on its platform would be required to remain accountable to the people..

It said The Orange Book would serve as a framework for guiding the conduct of ADC public office holders and reinforcing the party’s commitment to responsible governance.

Earlier, Abdullahi described Senator David Mark as a driving force behind the party’s current direction, saying the former Senate President had played a significant role in shaping the ADC’s new approach to governance.

He said the party was seeking to provide an alternative approach to governance, with particular emphasis on discipline and accountability among elected representatives.

“Our party will do something differently by instilling discipline among the elected representatives to be accountable to the people,” he said.

The party said the Code of Conduct would also serve as a guide for its candidates and elected officials, with the aim of ensuring that political power is exercised in the interest of the people rather than for personal, political or partisan benefits.

The ADC further pledged to promote transparency, accountability and continuity in public administration, stressing that public projects should not be abandoned merely because there has been a change in government or political leadership.
