Former Cincinnati Bengals running back Rudi Johnson has died at the age of 45. According to TMZ Sports, Johnson passed away in Florida just after midnight on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. A family source confirmed his death earlier this week, revealing that the cause of death has not yet been officially released.
The source told TMZ Sports that Johnson had recently been struggling with mental health challenges and the possible effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which he was ultimately unable to overcome. Despite these struggles, Johnson dedicated himself to helping others both on and off the field, a commitment that remained central to his life until his passing.
Johnson was born in Petersburg, Virginia, on October 1, 1979. He entered the NFL in 2001 after being selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. His first two seasons saw limited playtime, but he emerged as a starting running back in his third season at age 24, rushing for 957 yards and nine touchdowns.
Over the following three seasons, Johnson became one of the league’s most reliable running backs, amassing more than 4,000 rushing yards and scoring 36 touchdowns. Fans in Cincinnati admired his powerful running style and relentless effort. Johnson’s professional football career concluded in 2008 following a season with the Detroit Lions. In total, he ran for 5,979 yards and scored 49 touchdowns across his NFL career.
Before turning professional, Johnson starred at Auburn University, playing only one season in 2000 but leaving a significant mark. He rushed for 1,567 yards and scored 13 touchdowns that year, earning SEC Player of the Year honors. Following his transition to the NFL, Johnson continued his commitment to helping others through the Rudi Johnson Foundation, which created programs to support children and families. A family member emphasized that giving back was always his top priority.
Johnson’s sudden death has left teammates, fans, and the wider football community shocked and heartbroken. His legacy on the field, combined with his dedication to community service, ensures he will be remembered not only as a formidable athlete but also as a compassionate and generous individual.

Super Eagles and Galatasaray striker, Victor Osimhen, has become the first Nigerian to score 10 goals in the UEFA Champions League (UCL).
The 26-year-old striker reached the milestone after scoring the lone goal in Galatasaray’s 1-0 win over Liverpool at the RAMS Park on Tuesday night, September 30.
Osimhen converted a penalty kick with Alisson Becker diving the wrong way after Dominic Sobozlai had smacked Barış Alper Yılmaz in the face to concede the penalty.
The goal took Osimhen ahead of Obafemi Martins to become the highest scoring Nigerian in the UCL, excluding qualification matches.
He also became the first Nigerian to score for three different clubs in the UCL. He had earlier scored for Lille and Napoli in the competition.
