A former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Kingsley Moghalu, has distanced himself from reports that wrongly named him as the Labour Party candidate in the November 8, 2025, Anambra State governorship election.
In a statement via X on Tuesday, Moghalu expressed distress over publications that cited him as the Labour Party candidate and, in some cases, used his photograph alongside the reports.
He described the reports as “false,” noting that the media outlets appeared to have conflated him with Chief George Moghalu, who was the actual LP candidate in the election.
He wrote, “I am distressed to have seen several news reports in newspapers and other media on the recently held Anambra State governorship election in Nigeria, citing ‘Kingsley Moghalu’ as the candidate of Labour Party @NgLabour in this election, with some running my photograph along with their reports.
“These reports are false, unfortunate and smack of lazy reporting, as they were apparently conflating Chief George Moghalu, who was the Labour Party candidate in the election, with me.”
Moghalu stated that he is not a member of any political party in Nigeria, did not contest the governorship election, and has not participated in partisan politics since 2022.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I am not a member of any political party in Nigeria. I was not a candidate in the Anambra State gubernatorial election held on November 8, 2025.
“I resigned from participation in partisan politics in Nigeria in September 2022, ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
“I was the presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 2019 presidential election,” he added.
He called on all other media organisations that published the incorrect reports to issue immediate corrections and publish retractions.
PUNCH Online reports that the actual LP candidate, George Moghalu, contested against Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance and other candidates, including Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress.
He lost decisively to Soludo in the official count tracked across the state and in his own local government area, Nnewi North.
According to the Returning Officer and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, Soludo defeated Ukachukwu, who scored 99,445 votes, and Chukwuma, who polled 37,753 votes.
George came fourth with 10,576 votes.
But he immediately rejected the declared result, accusing the exercise of widespread vote buying and underage voting and describing the poll as “a sham.”
Speaking to journalists in Nnewi, he said the irregularities undermined the credibility of the outcome and signalled that the LP would pursue available remedies.
“The exercise was marred by widespread vote buying and reports of underage voting in some areas. The November 8, 2025, governorship election in Anambra State, in my view, fell short of expectations.
“I hereby reject it in its entirety. I have contested in previous elections, but this one was different. The level of vote buying was alarming,” he said, further alleging that minors were seen with voter cards and allowed to vote.
