Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Saturday arrested the leader of the gang that kidnapped and m8rdered a renowned professor of neurology, Ekanem Philip Ephraim.

It was  reported that Professor Ekanem, a consultant at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), was abducted on 13th July, 2023 by unknown gunmen who posed as patients at her private clinic at Atimbo Road, Calabar.

Nine suspects were arrested in connection with the kidnap and are currently in prison custody awaiting trial.

A credible security source confirmed to security analyst Zagazola Makama on Monday, December 29, 2025 that the gang leader, Patrick Essien Etim, 23, and his accomplice, Bassey Antiha Asuquo, 40, were apprehended at a medical facility in Cross River State while planning to kidnap another medical bigwig.

According to the source, the DSS had been tracking the kidnap ring since Ephraim’s killing in July 2023, when gunmen posing as patients abducted her.

The duo have confessed to the crime, admitting that they killed the professor after collecting multiple ransom payments from her family, the source disclosed.

“It has been two years of torment for her loved ones, not knowing what happened to the Professor. I believe that, with this arrest, her family and loved ones will be able to finally have some peace and the much needed closure that they deserve,” the source disclosed.

The suspects, alongside one Isaac Ekpeyong who was also arrested by DSS operatives, also owned up to kidnapping other victims and vandalizing electricity cables.

Prof Ekanem’s kidnap sparked statewide protests by the state chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA).

The medical association had embarked on an indefinite strike, which crippled the health sector for over a week, in a bid to prevail on the government to rescue the Professor.

“This huge breakthrough underscores the commitment of the DSS in reverting to covertness in its operations and restoring public safety across the country,” declared the source.

Four Abuja police officers arrested for allegedly extorting ICPC chairman

Published

on

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has detained four officers accused of extorting N53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr Musa Aliyu (SAN), during an unauthorised stop-and-search exercise in Abuja.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Monday, July 20, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, condemned the officers, describing them as “thieves” who had disgraced the police force through their actions.

Investigations by the police showed that the officers allegedly abandoned their assigned duty posts, converged around the Banex area of Wuse and erected an illegal checkpoint where they targeted motorists for extortion. Unaware of the identity of their victim, they reportedly stopped the ICPC chairman and compelled him to obtain cash through a Point of Sale (POS) operator.

According to Sanusi, Aliyu withdrew N53,000, paid the transaction charges and handed over the money, which the officers allegedly shared among themselves.

The police boss disclosed that the command declared the officers wanted before tracking down their leader. His confession, he said, led investigators to the remaining members of the group.

“We got all of them. We are going to make sure they are severely punished. Those that are going to be dismissed will definitely be dismissed.”

The commissioner also reminded officers and members of the public that the Inspector-General of Police had outlawed the indiscriminate search of citizens’ mobile phones during patrols.

“You cannot stop anybody on the road and ask the person to bring out his phone for search. If any policeman stops you and asks to search your phone, don’t agree. Call the police emergency lines and we will ask them why. We will still enforce the IG’s directive. Some of them are on the task because they are criminally minded. They want to perpetrate such acts. If we get them, they will face disciplinary actions and will be made to face the consequences.”
