Kwankwaso meets NDC chair, resolves Kano crisis

Published

on

A former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Tuesday met with the Kano State Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Hussaini Mairiga, in a move to resolve the lingering crisis within the party.

Mairiga confirmed the meeting in an interview with The PUNCH on Tuesday, noting that it involved key stakeholders of the party at the state level.

According to him, the engagement was aimed at addressing disagreements over the party’s structure and leadership in Kano State.

Following the meeting, Mairiga, in a statement, announced that the crisis had been resolved and expressed support for Kwankwaso’s leadership.

He said, “We had a fruitful discussion with Sen. Kwankwaso and other critical stakeholders of our great party. All lingering issues have been amicably resolved in the interest of unity and progress.

“As a party, we have agreed to move forward together, and we recognise Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as our leader in Kano State.”

Mairiga further urged party members to remain calm and committed to the ideals of the NDC, stressing that unity was key to achieving success in future elections.

“I call on all our members to remain steadfast and work collectively for the growth of the party. This resolution marks a new beginning for the NDC in Kano,” he added.

The development follows days of tension within the Kano chapter of the party after Kwankwaso’s defection to the NDC alongside Peter Obi, a move that sparked concerns over control of the party structure.

The crisis deepened after the state chairman had earlier rejected alleged moves to cede leadership of the party to the former governor, insisting that the existing executives would not surrender control.

He had also disclosed that attempts to integrate Kwankwaso into the party initially stalled due to disagreements over leadership arrangements, with both sides holding separate meetings that failed to produce a consensus.

The situation further escalated amid claims that the party’s planned state congress was suspended, fuelling suspicions among some members over possible moves to restructure the party leadership in Kano.

“Let Tinubu Finish His Job, He’ll Pull Nigeria Out of This Mess” — Jide Kosoko Urges Nigerians

Published

on

Veteran Nollywood actor Jide Kosoko has defended President Bola Tinubu’s administration amid criticism over Nigeria’s economic hardship, insisting that things are not as bad as some Nigerians portray them.

The 72-year-old actor spoke during an interview on Talk To B, a podcast hosted by actress Biola Adebayo, in a video posted on YouTube on Friday night.

Kosoko, an open supporter of Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), blamed previous administrations for failing to plan adequately for Nigeria’s growing population, arguing that the current government was addressing inherited problems.

“Things are not as bad as some people made us understand,” he said, adding that some Nigerians complaining about hunger had no meaningful source of livelihood before Tinubu assumed office.

He also defended the removal of fuel subsidy, arguing that the funds previously used to sustain it could be redirected towards essential services. He cited the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as one of the government’s initiatives and urged beneficiaries to share their experiences.

While acknowledging that Nigerians were going through difficult times, Kosoko urged citizens to remain patient, insisting that the administration had introduced policies capable of attracting investments and improving the country’s situation.

The actor further called on Nigerians to re-elect Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that opposition parties had little to offer compared with the incumbent.

“Let’s allow the man to finish his job. He’s doing well,” Kosoko said.

He also expressed confidence in the president’s ability to address the country’s challenges, stating, “My appeal is this. He will take us out of this mess. He is only cleaning up people’s mess.”

Dave Umahi inaugurates APC infrastructure campaign team ahead of 2027 elections

Published

on

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has inaugurated members of the Office of the Deputy Director-General, Infrastructure, Mobilisation and Sensitisation, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 elections.

Umahi, who serves as DDG, Infrastructure, Mobilisation and Sensitisation for the council, said the team would identify, document and publicise infrastructure projects being executed by the Federal Government across the country.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting in Abuja on Thursday, he said the initiative was aimed at strengthening coordination, infrastructure communication, mobilisation and public sensitisation ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

“The team’s primary responsibility is to identify, document, compile, and publicise infrastructure projects the Federal Government is executing across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

“Although the Federal Ministry of Works accounts for a significant proportion of the Federal Government’s infrastructure investments, the team’s coverage should extend to other MDAs.

“This is to ensure a comprehensive account of infrastructure development across the six geopolitical zones of the country.”

Umahi said the Senior Special Assistants to the President (SSA-P) on Community Engagement for the six geopolitical zones who also appointed as Zonal Coordinators, other members of the ODDG, alongside the Secretary, should work collaboratively.

This, he said, was to identify and document relevant infrastructure projects within their respective zones.

He emphasised that the compilation should cover projects executed by the Federal Ministry of Works, as well as infrastructure initiatives undertaken by other MDAs.

He said this was to provide a comprehensive overview of infrastructure investments and the developmental strides of the Renewed Hope Administration of President Bola Tinubu, across the length and breadth of the country.

The minister clarified that existing publicity activities between the Ministry of Works and the senior special assistants would continue.

He added that the new office would provide a broader framework for coordinating information on infrastructure projects undertaken by other MDAs at zonal, sub-national and national levels.

According to him, accurate documentation and effective communication will make information on government infrastructure investments more accessible to Nigerians.

Umahi described infrastructure development as a key driver of economic growth, national development and community integration.

“Infrastructure investment stimulates economic activities, connects communities, creates opportunities and supports the growth of other sectors of the economy,” he said.

He also highlighted the Federal Government’s adoption of continuous reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) technology in road construction, saying it would reduce dependence on imported bitumen and promote the use of local resources and expertise.

The minister said the technology would support local economic activities, reduce foreign exchange demand associated with imported road construction material and promote more durable infrastructure delivery.

He urged members of the office to ensure that information on infrastructure projects was accurately compiled and effectively disseminated to the public.
