Missing Ebonyi engineers’ families demand fresh probe

Published

on

Wives of five engineers linked to NELAN Consulting have rejected recent comments by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, accusing him of attempting to “sweep the truth under the carpet” over the disappearance and presumed killing of their husbands in 2021.

In a strongly worded rejoinder signed by the wives of the engineers, namely Mrs Patricia Onyemeh, Mrs Lovette Edeani, Mrs Ifeoma Ejiofor, Mrs Esther Aneke, and Mrs Nwazulum, the women said Umahi’s response failed to address “grave factual and moral concerns that have persisted for nearly five years.”

The statement follows Umahi’s March 16, 2026, response in which he reportedly linked the engineers’ disappearance to communal unrest.

But the families disputed this, insisting that “the characterisation of the disappearance of the five engineers… as a general consequence of communal crisis is completely outrageous, misconceived, misrepresented, and flawed.”

The engineers, who were supervising an African Development Bank-backed ring road project in Ebonyi State, went missing on November 3, 2021, during Umahi’s tenure as governor.

According to the families, their husbands had travelled for an official meeting arranged by the state government, and were last seen in connection with the project.

“Credible accounts indicate that the victims were last seen in connection with official engagements linked to the Ebonyi Ring Road project,” the statement read, raising “legitimate questions” about attempts to attribute the incident to communal violence.

The wives alleged irregularities in the handling of the case by security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force.

They questioned why a DSS investigator, identified as Victor Chijioke Onyesom, was “suddenly sacked at the peak of his investigation,” alleging that he had been tracking communications linked to the case.

“Who influenced the conspiracy to terminate the investigation at DSS?” they asked.

The families also faulted the police for presenting skeletal remains without conducting DNA verification.

“The police presented them to the family as remains of the victims, but refused to do a DNA test.

“The test further showed that one of the five skeletal remains belonged to a female, whereas the five missing engineers are all men,” the statement said.

It further accused authorities of rushing to file charges against six suspects without concluding investigations or producing bodies.

“Without a doubt, the conspiracy in hurriedly filing the purported charge… was to tactically close the investigation… and shield the real culprits,” the wives said.

They added: “Where are the bodies of our husbands? You arrested their killers.”

The families also alleged intimidation after petitioning top government officials, including President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

According to them, “an undisclosed person… threatened us not to push further for the reinvestigation of the case.”

Rejecting Umahi’s position outright, the wives said: “We totally reject David Umahi’s responses as misconceived and unfounded,” citing “interference in the investigative process, the sudden termination of the investigation, the removal of key investigators, and the suppression of critical evidence.”

They described the case as a “whitewash, cover-up, mischief, conspiracy, and plot to use the court to foreclose investigation.”

The families called on the President, National Assembly leadership, and civil society groups to compel security agencies to reopen the case.

“We will have no option but to embark on another protest if the investigation is not reopened.

“The blood of our dear husbands will never go in vain,” the wives said.

US roller coaster ‘incident’ kills one, injures several

Published

on

One person was killed and several were injured after an “incident” on a roller coaster at a theme park in the US state of Georgia on Monday, officials said.

Officials did not confirm how the person died or how the others were injured in the incident at Six Flags Over Georgia.

Cobb County Chairwoman Lisa Cupid said detectives from the county’s major crimes unit were investigating what happened.

Cupid said one person had died and others were injured, adding that next of kin had been notified.

“A terrible tragedy occurred today at Six Flags Over Georgia,” Cupid said in a statement.

“I cannot imagine the horror the patrons and employees witnessed today, and my heart aches for the family who lost a loved one,” she said.

A Six Flags spokesperson told US media that the park and local authorities responded immediately and that they were fully cooperating with local officials.

“We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today,” the spokesperson said.

Theme park operator Six Flags, which has properties throughout North America, has temporarily closed nine similar rollercoasters across six parks “out of an abundance of caution”.

Officials did not specify which ride was involved in the incident in Georgia, but local media identified it as the Goliath roller coaster.

The roller coaster reaches top speeds of 70 miles per hour (113 kmh) and heights of 200 feet (61 meters), according to the park’s website.

The incident comes after Six Flags decided last month to permanently shut down a popular roller coaster in its California theme park after dozens of people claimed to have suffered brain damage while riding it.

FG seeks arrest of suspect in attack on Ogun FMC worker

Published

on

The Federal Government has called on the Nigeria Police Force to immediately arrest and prosecute the suspect who allegedly stabbed a health worker at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Ogun.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, made the call in a statement issued on Monday night by Ado Bako, Assistant Director, Information and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Salako condemned the reported stabbing of Mr Lawal Olasunkanmi, a medical laboratory scientist at the hospital, describing the attack as “barbaric and unacceptable”.

“No grief, frustration or dissatisfaction with care can justify violence against a health worker performing his lawful duties.”

The minister said the ministry would follow the case to ensure that the alleged assailant was brought to justice.

He said the incident reinforced the urgency of implementing measures directed by the ministry on Aug. 5, to strengthen the protection of health workers in federal tertiary health institutions.

According to him, the measures include strengthened security arrangements, violence-prevention teams, incident reporting, collaboration with law-enforcement agencies and improved complaint-handling procedures.

“These safeguards must translate into effective protection for health personnel across health facilities,” he said.

Salako also appealed to health workers, who had embarked on industrial action at FMC Abeokuta to return to work immediately in the interest of patients and the wider public.

He urged the workers to allow security authorities to carry out their duties and pursue the investigation.

The minister further urged the hospital management to ensure that the injured staff member received appropriate medical care and support while strengthening security arrangements in line with Federal Government directives.

He extended the government’s condolences to the family of the deceased patient, stressing that the loss of a loved one deserved compassion and appropriate attention.

Salako urged anyone dissatisfied with the care received at the hospital to use its formal complaints mechanism.

He said that such concerns could be examined fairly and addressed on their merits without recourse to violence.

The minister reiterated that protecting health workers was essential to safe and uninterrupted healthcare delivery.

According to him, health facilities must remain safe environments where personnel can perform their duties without fear of violence and patients and their families can seek care with confidence.
