APC waives screening for Tinubu ahead of primaries

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has waived the screening requirement for President Bola Tinubu ahead of its 2027 primaries, declaring him duly cleared in line with the party’s constitution and internal procedures.

The decision was taken by the National Working Committee at its 188th meeting, held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the party’s National Secretariat.

In a statement issued after the meeting by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC said the decision was taken in line with the powers granted to the NWC under Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv) of its constitution to organise and oversee party primaries and, where necessary, grant waivers in the party’s best interest.

The statement read, “The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress, at its 188th meeting held today, May 6, 2026, resolved to waive, and has waived, screening requirements for His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and deemed him duly screened in accordance with the Constitution of the party for the purpose of participation in the upcoming primary elections.

“This decision was made pursuant to the powers conferred on the NWC under Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv) of the Constitution of the APC to organise and supervise the party’s primaries and, in special circumstances, grant waivers in the best interest of the party.

“The NWC noted that the President has received overwhelming endorsement and a vote of confidence from critical stakeholders of the party, including the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), the leadership and members of the National Assembly, and other organs of the party at the APC National Summit of May 22, 2025, and other major statutory events of the party.

“It further noted that, as the incumbent President and leader of the party, having been duly screened and cleared ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries, requiring his physical appearance before a screening committee at this time would be redundant and unnecessary.”

The APC commenced the sale of expression of interest and nomination forms on April 28, with the exercise scheduled to close by midnight on May 6.

The screening exercise is expected to begin on May 8.

Funder of the Tinubu Support Groups, James Faleke, who represents the Ikeja Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, purchased the N100m expression of interest and nomination forms for the President on April 28.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed the Presidential and National Assembly elections for Saturday, January 16, 2027, while governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for Saturday, February 6, 2027.

INEC also stated that party primaries and the resolution of related disputes will hold between April 23 and May 30, 2026. The commission further announced that campaigns for the Presidential and National Assembly elections will commence on August 19, 2026, while those for governorship and state assembly elections will begin on September 9, 2026.

Adelabu rallies APC ward executives on governorship ambition ahead of 2027

The former Minister of Power and one of the Governorship aspirants under the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State in 2027 election, Adebayo Adelabu on Wednesday, met with the APC ward executives across the 33 Local Government Areas of the state as part of his ongoing grassroots mobilisation.

Adelabu, while addressing the APC ward executives at Jogor Centre, Liberty Road in Ibadan, the state capital, stressed that strengthening the base of the party was critical to rebuilding APC and reclaiming the power come 2027.

He described the grassroots “as pillars of the party and an integral part of any successful government,” adding that “no administration can achieve meaningful development without the input and participation of people at the grassroots level.”

The PUNCH reports that Adelabu, who recently resigned from the Federal Government to pursue his governorship ambition, also met with members of the state executive council of the APC on Tuesday and formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election.

Adelabu, while addressing party executives at the APC secretariat in Oke-Ado, Ibadan, expressed confidence in securing the party’s ticket and winning the election, while rejecting moves to impose a consensus candidate.

He said the visit was aimed at formally notifying the leadership of his ambition and reaffirming his loyalty to the APC and commitment to the development of Oyo State.

His declaration followed recent endorsements of Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, Sharafadeen Alli, by some APC leaders as their preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

However, on Wednesday, the former minister noted that “ward executives remain the closest link between the party and the people, and their role in shaping policies and driving political support cannot be overlooked.”

The former minister said, “Sustainable progress in this state must begin from the communities, where the real impact of governance is felt. My vision for 2027 goes beyond winning an election but focuses on inclusive development rooted in grassroots engagement.

“I can’t do it alone. I need your (Ward Executives) support in the fulfilment of my gubernatorial ambition. I won’t disappoint you and the people of the state if elected as governor in 2027,” Adelabu promised.

He, therefore, urged the party leaders across the local governments to remain united and committed to the ideals of the progressives, stressing that APC’s victory in 2027 would depend largely on the strength and mobilisation capacity at the ward levels.

The APC governorship aspirant said, “Let me assure you that I would continue to engage you regularly and carry you along in all the party activities. Your support would be central to my campaign and governance agenda if I emerged as the party’s candidate and governor come 2027.”

Adelabu further pledged to prioritise their welfare and involvement in decision-making if elected.

In his remark, the APC leader from Akinyele Local Government, Isiaka Alimi commended the former minister for his love and respect for the party, urging party members and the people of the state to support his (Adelabu) gubernatorial ambition.

Also speaking, a party leader from Ibadan North Local Government, Wale Sanusi, called on party faithful to support him, promising that he (Adelabu) will not disappoint them if elected in 2027.

Akwa Ibom governor, Umo Eno submits APC nomination form, seeks party support ahead of 2027

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has submitted his nomination form for the primaries of the All Progressives Congress, with a call on party faithful to support his second-term aspiration.

Speaking with Government House correspondents at the Victor Attah International Airport on Wednesday upon his return from Abuja, where he submitted the form, Eno said his aspiration was premised on the need to consolidate ongoing projects in the state.

“I have just submitted the nomination form. We call on members of the party to support our nomination during the primaries, as we will continue to pray and trust God for more development to thrive in the state,” Eno said.

He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to build on existing achievements and ensure that more benefits of governance reach the people if given another mandate.

He noted that although his administration has made significant progress, not all set goals can be fully achieved within one tenure, disclosing that over 82 projects are still ongoing and at various stages of completion.

“We will continue to pray, trust in God, and remain committed to serving our people. But you can see clearly that there is still so much work on the ground. Many of the projects we have started, about 82 projects, will not be fully completed within this term.

“That is why we are asking for another mandate to drive home these initiatives and consolidate on the progress already made for the benefit of our people,” he added.

The governor appreciated residents of the state for their unwavering support over the last three years and expressed hope that such support would be sustained during the remaining one year of his first term and into a second term.

Abia governor confident of second term

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has expressed confidence that he will complete his eight-year tenure in office.

Otti stated this on Tuesday in his office while receiving members of the Old Students Association of the Federal School of Arts and Science, Aba, who visited him and expressed confidence that he would be re-elected to complete his projects in the state.

The governor said, “About 2027, we don’t let it distract us, but you have a point. Primaries will happen within the month and then elections will be next year. But we know that Abia people are not stupid.

“They know what is good for them. Because of that, we also know that it’s all about politics. And I’m not too sure that there is someone that would want to throw away what is good.

“This place is God’s own state. So, at the time that it pleased God, He makes changes here. And God doesn’t have unfinished business, or unfinished project.

“So, we are confident that we will complete the project that we have been asked to do by Abians.”

Otti commended the old students for their decision to renovate one of the hostels in their alma mater, describing the move as laudable.

“I want to also thank you for your decision to fix one of the hostels. It is a very laudable action that you have done, because you could have as well ignored it. I’m sure there are a lot of members of your school that may not even be coming for these meetings.

“So, I want to congratulate you and encourage you to continue, because your story cannot be told without this school,” Otti said.

The governor thanked the association for choosing Abia for its bi-annual meeting, noting that the decision was commendable.

He also disclosed that his decision to support Professor Bart Nnaji’s Aba Power project was to ensure steady power supply in the state, commending Nnaji’s resilience.

Otti said an agreement had been signed and that the state was at the point of payment to acquire the Umuahia ring-fenced area of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, adding that when completed, the remaining eight local government areas, including Umuahia and its environs, as well as Abia North Senatorial District, would be linked to Geometric Power.

“So, there’s excess power. Of course, with an additional turbine, it will be able to generate 188 megawatts. So, the whole idea is to take excess power from Aba to the other eight local governments in Abia Central and Abia North.

“We’ve also set up the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency. And so right now, everything about regulation is within the state. So, we will be detached from the national electricity grid,” Otti said.

Earlier, the President of the Old Students Association of the Federal School of Arts and Science, Aba, Tony Ejieji, commended the governor’s performance, noting that members were in the state for their bi-annual meeting.

He said the state had become peaceful and safe, hence their decision to host the meeting there, which had previously been held in Lagos.

Ejieji also praised the governor’s infrastructural projects across the state and urged him to sustain the momentum.

He added that members of the association were renovating one of the hostels in their alma mater and commended developments at the Geometric Power Plant in Aba and other projects in Aba and Umuahia.

The meeting was attended by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education and other government officials.
