Sultan Warns Nigerian Youths Against Political, Economic Thuggery

Published

on

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has cautioned Nigerian youths against allowing themselves to be used as thugs for political or economic gains.

The Sultan gave the warning on Sunday in Ilorin, Kwara State, during the grand finale of the centenary celebration of Az-Zumratul Adabiyyatul School of Arabic and Islamic Studies.

The institution, which marked its 100th anniversary, was established by the late founder of the Ansarul Islam Society of Nigeria, Sheikh Muhammad Kamalud-deen Al-Adabiy.

“I challenge our youths not to allow themselves to be used as thugs in whatever way, either for political or economic gains,” the Sultan said.

He also urged Nigerians to pray for their leaders, including the President and state governors, noting that Allah holds the solution to the country’s challenges.

The Sultan further called on Muslims to demonstrate good conduct and love their neighbours as themselves, irrespective of religious differences.

“All of us should be better Muslims by being good to our neighbours regardless of their faith. We should also pray for our leaders always so that they can do good things for all of us,” he said.

He added, “We are Muslims and we love everybody. We have not come here to say that we are better than anyone. Our leaders should do more. We know our problems, but Allah has solutions to our problems. It’s Allah that grants one or nation prosperity and otherwise.”

The Sultan commended the late founder of the institution for his foresight and contributions to Islamic education, expressing appreciation for the school’s continued progress.

“We thank Allah for keeping the progress of this institution. We will always do all we can do to help this institution,” he said.

‘Your Ways Are Pure, You’ll Triumph’ — Sowore Reveals What Pastor Adeboye Told Him

Published

on

Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has revealed that the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, told him he regularly prayed for him and believed he would triumph.

Sowore said the cleric also described his ways as pure during a recent meeting at the RCCG’s national headquarters in Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

The activist disclosed this during an interview on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast, about a week after attending the church’s National Thanksgiving Service.

In a post on X following the service, Sowore had revealed that Adeboye offered to pray for him during a private meeting.

Recounting the encounter on the podcast, the AAC presidential candidate said the cleric recognised him and told him he had been praying for him.

“He said to me, ‘You know, I know you very well, and I pray for you all the time, and I know your ways are pure, and that you will triumph,’” Sowore said.

He explained that after the thanksgiving service, he was initially asked to wait near Adeboye’s car but was later informed that the cleric wanted to see him in the church’s vestry.

According to Sowore, their conversation also revisited their first meeting in 1996, when he approached the cleric for support in a campaign against cultism in Nigerian universities.

He said he had sought Adeboye’s assistance shortly after completing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, at a time when cult-related activities were becoming a major concern on university campuses.

Sowore recalled that Adeboye supported the initiative and directed that N10,000 be given to him to fund the campaign.

“We used it to go and campaign against cultism,” he said.

The activist said Adeboye also sought his permission to pray for him during their recent encounter, a request he accepted, although he told the cleric he would keep his eyes open during the prayer.

“So he did pray for me, and we stood up, and we laughed,” he said.

When asked whether he had given his life to Christ during the meeting, Sowore said the conversation did not touch on such a commitment, explaining that he was not involved in organised religion.

“We didn’t have that kind of conversation because giving life to Christ is for people who are into organised religion. I am not into organised religion,” he said.

Sowore further clarified that he did not discuss his presidential ambition with the RCCG leader, describing their encounter as a personal conversation.

He said the discussion was partly shaped by Adeboye’s surprise at their previous meeting nearly three decades ago

Peter Obi says he won 2023 election but has ‘no evidence’ to prove claim, read details

Published

on

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has acknowledged that he has no evidence to substantiate his claim that he won the 2023 presidential election, while insisting that he remains convinced that he was the actual winner.

Obi made the remarks in a recent interview with BBC Africa while discussing his position on the disputed 2023 election and his plans to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Asked directly whether he had evidence to support his claim of victory in the 2023 election, Obi said, “There’s no evidence. Everything is not based on evidence.”

He nevertheless maintained that he won the election, adding, “I won the election and that’s where I will end. I don’t like going back to the past. I won the election (2023). Well, there’s no evidence but I won the election.”

Obi contested the February 25, 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party and was placed third in the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The electoral commission declared Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner with 8,794,726 votes, while Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar came second with 6,984,520 votes. Obi recorded 6,101,533 votes.

Following the declaration, Obi and the Labour Party challenged the outcome at the Presidential Election Petitions Court, alleging electoral irregularities and non-compliance with electoral laws.

The five-member tribunal dismissed the petition on September 6, 2023, and upheld Tinubu’s victory.

Obi later took the case to the Supreme Court, but a seven-member panel of the apex court dismissed his appeal on October 26, 2023, ruling that it lacked merit and affirming the lower court’s decision.

Despite the court decisions, Obi has continued to reject the 2023 election outcome as a true reflection of the votes cast by Nigerians.
