Moves to demolish my house, hotel politically motivated – Gbenga Daniel insists

Published

on

Former governor of Ogun State and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has said the move by the present administration to destroy his private residence in Sagamu, The Asoludero Court, Conference Hotels Limited, among others, is not only politically motivated but also a blatant disregard for due process and the rule of law.

Daniel, in a statement on Saturday, condemned the action, stressing that the Abiodun-led administration was attempting to use the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022 to demolish buildings legally constructed before the law came into existence.

He maintained that the “Notice of Contravention” and a “Notice to Quit” simultaneously, with an immediate threat of demolition, is not a legal process but a thuggish tactic designed to intimidate and inflict damage.

The senator insisted that the penalties for any infractions under the law, if indeed there was any, are not a demolition or a threat of it.

The statement reads, “We strongly condemn this latest act of political persecution by Governor Dapo Abiodun, as evidenced by the recent issuance of these Notices, which were dated August 8, 2025, as a clear demonstration of the governor’s malicious and vindictive abuse of power, hiding behind a newly-enacted law retroactively to target a political opponent.

“The documents concerning these properties cite ‘suspected’ offenses related to construction without adequate permits (which is laughable). This is a ludicrous and flimsy excuse, as the properties in question have been in existence for many years. For instance, the Asoludero Court was built in 2004, while the Conference Hotel Sagamu was built in 2013, and the Annex since 2015.

“The governor’s administration is now attempting to use the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022 to demolish buildings that were legally constructed long before the law was even in existence.

“This action is not only politically motivated but also a blatant disregard for due process and the rule of law. The Notices in themselves are clear breaches of procedures, which allow adequate time intervals between Notifications on contraventions, Quits. The penalties for any infractions under the law, if indeed there was any, are not a demolition or a threat of it.

“All legal means will be used to hold the governor accountable for his lawless actions,” he said, calling on all well-meaning citizens, human rights organisations, and legal entities to join them in denouncing the flagrant misuse of authority.

Abia demolishes unapproved buildings in Umuahia market

Published

on

The Umuahia Capital Development Authority, acting under the directive of the Abia State Government, has commenced the demolition of buildings within the former Umuahia market, popularly known as Ogwumabiri, stating that the structures were built without government authorisation.

A statement released by the General Manager of UCDA, Mr Kingsley Agomoh, on Monday said the demolition is part of a broader vision to transform Umuahia into a modern, world-class capital city.

He said the former market space was allocated to a private investor by the previous administration for the purpose of building an event centre on a build, operate, and transfer arrangement.

The statement read, “In line with the Abia State Government’s vision to transform Umuahia into a modern city and a befitting capital, the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) has commenced the demolition of unauthorised residential structures built within the former Umuahia market premises without government approval.

“The former market space was allocated to a private investor by the previous administration to build an Event Centre on a Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) basis.

“However, the investor unilaterally repurposed the space and started developing residential duplexes and apartments, contrary to the government’s planned purpose for the space.”

Agomoh explained that the Abia State Government has been engaging the investor for the past one year and has offered a negotiated ex-gratia settlement that involves taking over the space for the building of a modern transportation hub that would integrate a bus terminal, a train station, and intercity shuttles.

“As a responsible and business-friendly administration, the government has been engaging the investor for the past year and has offered a negotiated ex gratia settlement to the investor.

“The government has taken over the space to repurpose it as part of a modern transportation hub, integrating the bus terminal, train station, and intercity shuttle connection point. The structures demolished were deemed unfit for the established purpose of overriding public interest.

“The UCDA is committed to ensuring that the new transportation hub enhances the city’s infrastructure, promotes efficient mobility, and contributes to the overall economic growth of Umuahia as a modern capital city,” the statement added.

The National Identity Management Commission has given its diaspora National Identity Number enrolment partners 48 hours to activate their licences on an upgraded platform.

In a statement on Monday, the Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, said the upgrade would provide seamless and robust services to Nigerians abroad, and described the facility as more secure.

Adegoke said, “NIMC Diaspora Front-End Partners (FEPs) have been onboarded on the upgraded system with intensive training to equip the FEPs with the prerequisite knowledge on the application and effective management of the new system.

“While all the Diaspora FEPs are required to obtain and activate their NIN enrolment licences on the upgraded platform within the next forty-eight hours (48 hours), diaspora applicants can access enrolment services from the compliant FEPs.

“The Commission apologises for any inconvenience the platform upgrade process might have caused and has set up a dedicated service team to resolve all issues related to diaspora enrolment.

“Diaspora applicants experiencing issues with NIN enrolment should please reach the Commission via nimccustomercare@nimc.gov.ng for timely resolution.”

Adegoke further said NIN enrolment was ongoing across all centres in Nigeria, and applicants could locate the nearest enrolment centres on the NIMC website.

“Nigerians at home or in the Diaspora can also modify their NIN data through the https://selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng portal.

“NIN holders are equally enjoined to download the NIMC NINAuth App on either iOS or Google Play Store to instantly verify their NINs, approve who sees their information, take total control of their data and enjoy seamless verification and authentication services,” Adegoke said.
