NSCDC commander faults police report on officer’s death

Published

on

The Commander of the Mining Marshals of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), John Onoja, on Monday dismissed a police investigation report linking one of his officers to over ₦2bn in suspicious financial transactions following the death of a mining marshal operative.

Onoja also accused foreign nationals allegedly involved in illegal mining of sponsoring what he described as a coordinated campaign to discredit the Mining Marshals, a special unit established by the NSCDC to combat illegal mining nationwide.

The controversy follows a viral publication titled, “Nigeria Police Arrest Three NSCDC Officers Over Colleague’s Death, Trace Over ₦2bn To Suspect’s Bank Account,” which claimed that police investigators uncovered suspicious transactions linked to one of the officers under investigation in connection with the death of a Mining Marshals operative.

Responding in a statement, Onoja described the report as false, misleading and aimed at undermining the work of the anti-illegal mining unit.

He maintained that records from the bank account referenced in the report showed transactions amounting to less than ₦1 million over the past year.

“The Zenith Bank account number 1008392780 of Jibrin Labaran from last year’s statement of account contains a total debit of ₦760,457.25 and total credit of ₦760,129.85, being his emolument as an officer, as against a ₦2bn claim in the purported police investigation report that was published online,” he said.

The Mining Marshals’ commander further accused officers of Team N of the Force Intelligence Department, led by CSP Abdulmajeed Abisoye Oyewumi, of repeatedly obstructing the Mining Marshals’ lawful operations at illegal mining sites in Nasarawa State.

According to him, the alleged interference predates the current investigation and forms part of a long-running dispute between the police team and the Mining Marshals over enforcement activities in the state.

Onoja alleged that the same police team had previously arrested some Mining Marshals operatives and attempted to frustrate prosecutions involving suspected illegal miners.

The NSCDC official also disclosed that he had formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, seeking the transfer of the investigation into the death of Deputy Superintendent of Corps Agada Levi from the police to the Department of State Services for what he described as an impartial review.

“Hence, my letter to the IGP requesting the matter be transferred to DSS for impartial review and handling. The modest thing to do was for the police to transfer the case to DSS,” he said.

Levi, who was attached to the Mining Marshals, reportedly died while on official duty. His death sparked investigations that eventually led to the arrest of some NSCDC personnel by the police.

Defending the conduct of the Mining Marshals leadership after Levi’s death, Onoja said the unit took responsibility for supporting the deceased officer’s family and organising his burial.

“I called a meeting of family members in my office and set up a burial committee, and all programmes and expenses were carried out from the committee without requesting a kobo from the family,” he said.

He added that friends and associates of the Mining Marshals later raised ₦3m for Levi’s widow as part of efforts to support the bereaved family.

Onoja further alleged that foreign nationals whose mining sites had been shut down by the Mining Marshals were financing efforts to tarnish the unit’s and its leadership’s reputation.

The commander noted that Levi’s death was the first fatality recorded by the Mining Marshals since the special enforcement unit was created more than two years ago to tackle illegal mining and protect the nation’s mineral resources.

He insisted that while the unit acknowledged Levi’s death, its leadership had no knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The commander urged members of the public to remain calm and allow relevant authorities to review the matter.

“We are not denying that Agada Levi died in the line of duty, sadly. But none of the Management Team of Mining Marshals knows anything about his death

“To this end, while the DSS begins to look into the investigation of this case on our request, we urge the public and all patriotic Nigerians who are reading between the lines to be calm, and to discountenance their cheap lies and blackmail,” he said.

The police have yet to publicly respond to the allegations raised by the Mining Marshals commander.

Ondo air crash: DHQ orders probe as rescue operations continue

Published

on

The Defence Headquarters has ordered an investigation into the crash of a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, Ondo State, as search and rescue operations continue at the scene.

The aircraft, on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos, carried military personnel and some family members, according to the DHQ.

The incident, which occurred near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, has thrown the military community into mourning, with the Defence Headquarters describing the mishap as a painful loss to the Armed Forces and the nation.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Director, Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Samaila Uba, said the investigation was being conducted in compliance with the directive of the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Tinubu, to establish the cause of the accident.

“In compliance with the directive of the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Tinubu, an investigation will be conducted to ascertain the cause of the accident, while Search and Rescue efforts by the NAF in collaboration with sister Services and emergency agencies continue at the site,” the statement said.

Uba said it received the news of the crash with “deep shock” and extended condolences to the families and loved ones of all persons involved.

The DHQ also commiserated with the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, the Nigerian Air Force and the entire Armed Forces family.

“This is indeed a painful loss to the entire Armed Forces and the nation at large. Our personnel give their all daily to keep Nigeria safe. Their courage and sacrifices will never be forgotten,” Uba said.

The military authorities assured Nigerians that the incident would not deter the Armed Forces from carrying out their constitutional responsibility of securing the country.

“The leadership of the Armed Forces wishes to assure all Nigerians that the Armed Forces will remain resolute and committed to our constitutional mandate of securing the nation, despite this painful setback. The sacrifice of our fallen heroes will continue to inspire our service to the nation,” the statement added.

The DHQ also appealed to the public to refrain from speculation and respect the privacy of the families affected by the incident while official procedures continue.

It said, “We appeal to the general public to refrain from speculation and to respect the privacy of the families affected in this difficult moment while official procedures continue.”

The ATR-42 aircraft type is a twin-engine turboprop commonly used for short-haul passenger, transport and specialised operations. The NAF operates aircraft for a range of missions, including personnel movement, logistics, surveillance and other military assignments.

However, the DHQ statement did not disclose the number of people on board, the extent of casualties or the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The military said search and rescue operations involving the NAF, sister Services and emergency agencies were ongoing, while the investigation would determine what led to the accident.

The DHQ prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed and for God to grant their families the strength to bear the loss.

US moves to revoke citizenship of two Nigerians and 38 others

Published

on

The United States Government has commenced proceedings to revoke the citizenship of two Nigerian nationals and 38 other individuals accused of serious offences as part of the Donald Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts.

The United States Department of Justice made the announcement in a statement on Monday, October 5, 2026.

According to the statement, the department has filed denaturalization actions in multiple U.S. district courts against 40 individuals accused of serious offenses, including acting as an agent for a foreign government, committing voluntary manslaughter, and aggravated sodomy against a special‑needs man.

Filed between August 21 and October 2, 2026, these complaints represent the largest volume of complaints submitted in a single period under the Trump administration.

Under the Immigration and Nationality Act, a naturalized U.S. citizen’s citizenship may be revoked, and certificate of naturalization canceled, if the naturalization was illegally procured or procured by concealment of a material fact or by willful misrepresentation.

“Today’s announcement marks the largest denaturalization effort in modern history,” said Attorney General Todd Blanche.

“From an individual convicted of espionage to others convicted of sexual offenses against minors, these defendants concealed critical facts from the U.S. government and represent serious criminal offenders. Under President Trump’s leadership, the Department of Justice will continue to employ the denaturalization process to maintain our national security and protect the American people.”

“Every single one of these individuals lied their way into U.S. citizenship,” said Assistant Attorney General Brett A. Shumate of the Justice Department’s Civil Division.

“This administration will continue to pursue the largest denaturalization effort in department history to restore trust and integrity in U.S. citizenship. Our message is clear: the United States will not tolerate deception in the naturalization process.”

One of the Nigerians is identified as Douglas Chukwuka Eze, (citizenship Unknown/Adult, Age Unknown)

According to the statement, on August 10, the Department of Justice filed a complaint in the District of Maryland seeking the denaturalization of Eze, also known as Anthony Chux Ezehez, because he committed immigration fraud in his naturalization proceedings.

“In 2023, Eze was convicted of two counts of False Swearing in Immigration Matter, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1546, based on his admission that, in the 1990’s, he stole a birth certificate belonging to Spencer Douglas Callaghan and used Mr. Callaghan’s identity to obtain immigration benefits,” the statement read.

“The United States alleges that the court should issue an order revoking Eze’s naturalization because he procured his naturalization by concealment of material facts and willful misrepresentations, he illegally procured his lawful permanent resident status by misrepresenting his identity and criminal history, and he provided false testimony when he lied under penalty of perjury in his naturalization proceedings. (District of Maryland).”

The second Nigerian is Beatrice Chioma Nwaoha Ashamole, 54, who the Justices Department accused of concealing previous criminal and immigration records during her naturalisation proceedings.

“On Sept. 25, the Department of Justice filed a complaint in the District of Maryland seeking the denaturalization of Beatrice Chioma Nwaoha Ashamole because throughout her naturalization proceedings, she did not disclose prior aliases, prior arrests, a prior immigration benefits application, or prior exclusions and deportations, despite the application asking for such information,” the statement read.

“The United Sates is charging her with illegally procuring her naturalization through fraud and false testimony. (District of Maryland.)”
