Lagos family petitions IG, accuses police of shielding alleged land grabbers

Published

on

The Olarinde Royal Family of Oguntedo Village, Satellite Town, Lagos State, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, accusing some officers of the Lagos State Police Command of abuse of power, intimidation and alleged collusion with land grabbers.

The petitioners also alleged that the officers frustrated investigations into violent attacks on members of the family and used police authority to harass and intimidate them.

The family had staged a protest at The PUNCH Place in July 2025 over the alleged harassment and land dispute.

In the petition, signed by Prince Yussuf Olarinde on behalf of the family and obtained by PUNCH Metro on Thursday, the petitioners accused officers attached to the Satellite Police Station, Area E Command, Tactical Team Area E and the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department of allegedly aiding land-grabbing activities and frustrating complaints against persons they described as land grabbers.

The petition was also addressed to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the X-Squad Unit and the Police Service Commission.

The family claimed that the disputed New Oguntedo Village and Satellite Town settlement was created and allocated to the Olarinde Royal Family by the then Federal Military Government in 1978 following government acquisition and resettlement exercises.

It further claimed that its ownership and possessory rights over the land were affirmed by a 1989 judgment of the High Court of Lagos State, which it said was subsequently enforced through warrants of possession issued in 1997 and 2010.

The petitioners alleged that despite the court judgment and possession orders, the family had continued to face invasions, demolitions, intimidation and violence by persons it described as land-grabbing syndicates and criminal trespassers.

They also accused some police officers of allegedly providing operational cover for armed thugs, preventing family members from accessing their ancestral properties and frustrating complaints made to the authorities.

The petition partly read, “Rather than maintaining neutrality and enforcing lawful court judgments, the officers complained against provided operational cover and protection for armed thugs and land-grabbing syndicates; intimidated lawful occupants and family members.

“They prevented members of the Olarinde family from accessing their ancestral homes and properties. While they supervised and facilitated unlawful invasions and demolitions, they also frustrated lawful complaints and petitions submitted by the petitioners; and used police authority as an instrument of oppression against victims while shielding alleged perpetrators.”

The family further alleged that several violent incidents, including shootings, assaults, threats to life and destruction of property, had been reported to the police.

It specifically cited an alleged assassination attempt on Olanrewaju Olarinde on July 9, 2025, accusing armed thugs of attacking him and claiming that the police failed to arrest or prosecute those responsible despite repeated complaints.

The petitioners also accused some officers of allegedly fabricating criminal allegations against members of the family, manipulating investigations and using criminal proceedings to harass and intimidate them.

They cited the arraignment of Yussuf Olarinde, Sanni Olarinde and the Oba-elect, Latifu Sadiku Olarinde, over alleged murder and armed robbery charges, as well as a separate case involving another family member, Tope Olarinde.

The family further alleged that properties belonging to its members were demolished, looted or unlawfully occupied during what it described as police-backed invasions.

According to the petition, vehicles, building materials, cash, personal belongings and other valuables worth millions of naira were allegedly stolen or confiscated during the incidents.

The family consequently urged the IG to order an independent investigation into the allegations and transfer the relevant case files from the Lagos State Command to the FCID or another investigative unit outside the state.

It also requested the investigation of the officers named in the petition, recovery of allegedly stolen properties, prosecution of identified suspects and police protection for members of the Olarinde family and residents of Oguntedo Village and Satellite Town.

The petitioners said, “We respectfully submit that the continued silence, compromise, neglect, and inaction of some officers of the Lagos State Police Command in the face of overwhelming complaints, subsisting court judgments, attempted killings, violent invasions, criminal intimidation, and organised unlawful activities constitute a dangerous perversion of justice and a grave threat to the rule of law.

“We therefore passionately appeal to your distinguished office to urgently intervene in the interest of justice, public peace, protection of innocent citizens, preservation of lives and property, and safeguarding the integrity and credibility of the Nigeria Police Force.”

The Force Public Relations Officer, Iniedu Okokon, could not be reached for reaction on Monday, as calls made to his telephone lines were unanswered.

A text message sent to him had also yet to receive a response as of the time of filing this report.

Published

on

The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a man, Ugwumba Enyinnaya, for allegedly impersonating a lawyer and practising for more than 11 years.

The state Police Public Relations Officerzz, SP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, saying the arrest followed an investigation into a petition alleging obtaining money by false pretence.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly collected ₦650,000 from one Chukwu David in March 2026 to facilitate the processing and approval of a street naming in Ohaozara Local Government Area.

The petitioner alleged that Enyinnaya presented himself as a lawyer with years of legal experience.

The police said investigations following his arrest revealed that he had been parading himself as a legal practitioner despite not being a lawyer.

During interrogation, the suspect admitted that he was not a lawyer, according to the statement.

“A search of his apartment led to the recovery of several exhibits, including a Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) seal; a portrait of the suspect dressed in barrister’s regalia; purported Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree certificates for the suspect bearing the name of Enugu State University of Science and Technology; a barrister’s robe and wig; judgements allegedly procured from the court and various legal documents allegedly prepared by him, including powers of attorney and deeds of conveyance,” the statement said.

The police said the suspect had been charged to court.

The Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, CP Hope Okafor, commended the operatives for uncovering the alleged impersonation and urged members of the public to verify the credentials of people offering legal services.

Lagos driver fleeing police arrest kills okada rider, injures two

Published

on

A  yet-to-be-identified motorcycle operator has been killed, and two others injured, after a speeding driver, allegedly fleeing police officers, knocked down three motorcycle riders on Liasu Road in the Idimu area of Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Saturday night during a police chase involving a vehicle suspected to belong to Internet fraudsters.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle while attempting to escape from the pursuing officers and knocked down the three motorcycle riders in the process.

One of the riders was said to have died on the spot, while the two others sustained injuries.

It was gathered that the driver and other occupants of the vehicle abandoned it and fled after realising what had happened.

An eyewitness who gave his name simply as Wahab said the vehicle was being chased from the Ile-Iwe end of the road towards the Council bus stop.

He said, “They were coming from the Ile-Iwe side when police officers in a minibus tried to stop them. It was in the process that they increased their speed and drove recklessly.

“It was when the driver lost control that he ran into the okada riders. The one directly hit died on the spot, and the driver and other male adults in the vehicle ran out of the vehicle and fled.”

The vehicle was subsequently towed to the nearest police station, while the injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital.

The incident, however, sparked a protest by commercial motorcycle riders operating along Powerline and Liasu roads, as they stopped conveying passengers to demand justice for their colleagues.

According to another resident, Titi Jayeoba, the protest left several residents stranded as they struggled to find alternative means of transportation.

“We were stranded on Sunday after the okada riders refused to operate. People who depend on motorcycles to get to church and other places were stranded. The tricycles available could not carry everybody, so many people found it difficult to get to their destinations.

“And some were not even interested in tricycles because they would not take them into their streets,” Jayeoba stated.

It was gathered that normalcy had since returned to the area after the motorcycle operators resumed operations later in the evening.

The deceased victim was also said to have been buried according to Islamic rites.

When contacted on Tuesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said she was not aware of the incident. She, however, promised to revert.

Katsina cleric killing update: Wife recounts attack, Tinubu orders manhunt

Published

on

The wife of slain Katsina Islamic cleric, Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka, has recounted how gunmen killed her husband in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of the state on Monday evening.

Hajiya Fatima Masussuka, who spoke with journalists at their residence in Dutsin-Ma on Tuesday, said the assailants attacked shortly after her husband left home to attend a teaching session with his Almajirai (Islamic pupils).

According to her, she had accompanied her husband outside their residence as he prepared to leave for the teaching session after he realised he had forgotten his bag.

She said, “My name is Fatima. I felt very bad. I accompanied him outside the house so he could go to where he teaches his students, the Almajirai, but I returned inside because he had forgotten his bag.

“Before I knew what was happening, I heard four gunshots. When I came out, I discovered that he had been shot.”

Fatima, who described the deceased as a caring husband, said she was his second wife and that they had a daughter together.

“He was indeed a caring husband,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Ansaru terrorist group has reportedly claimed responsibility for the killing of the cleric.

The group made the claim in an audio message released on Tuesday, accusing the deceased of being an infidel.

Ansaru reportedly said it attacked at about 8:30 pm, although it did not provide verifiable evidence to substantiate its claim.

Ansaru, which is linked to Al-Qaeda, broke away from Boko Haram in 2012 and has operated in parts of north-western Nigeria.

However, the Katsina State Police Command said it had yet to authenticate the group’s claim of responsibility.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, told our correspondent on Tuesday that the command was aware of the reports but had not confirmed their authenticity.

“We heard of the rumour making the rounds, but we are yet to authenticate the claim. We are on the field, and once we conclude the investigation, we will make it public,” Sadiq said.

Late on Monday, the police had confirmed the death of Sheikh Masussuka and his friend in a statement by Sadiq.

According to the statement, “The Katsina State Police Command regrets to confirm the tragic death of a prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka, and his friend, Adamu Abubakar, following an attack by suspected gunmen.

“The incident occurred today, Monday, 26th October 2026, at about 7:30 pm, in front of the scholar’s residence in Dutsin-Ma LGA, Katsina State, when two armed men riding on a motorcycle opened fire, fatally injuring both victims.

“Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Dutsin-Ma, promptly led a team of operatives to the scene. The victims were immediately rushed to the nearest hospital for medical attention, where they were unfortunately pronounced dead by the attending medical doctor.

“The Commissioner of Police, Katsina State Command, CP Ali Umar Fage, has ordered the deployment of tactical and operational teams to the area. An investigation has commenced, and efforts are being intensified to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.”

Tinubu orders manhunt

President Bola Tinubu has condemned the killing of Sheikh Masussuka and his friend, Abubakar.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu, deeply saddened by the killings, described the act as heinous and an assault on the values of peace and the sanctity of human life.

“President Tinubu extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, their followers, as well as the government and people of Katsina State, over the tragic loss,” the statement read.

The President also directed the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to move swiftly, intensify efforts already under way by the Katsina State Police Command, and ensure the perpetrators are tracked down, apprehended and brought to justice.

“President Tinubu prays for the repose of the souls of the departed and for comfort for all those who mourn their death,” the statement added.

Radda mourns

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Radda, mourned the killing of Sheikh Masussuka, describing him as a strong advocate of peaceful coexistence and interfaith harmony.

The governor also assured that the circumstances surrounding the cleric’s death would be thoroughly investigated, with those responsible brought to justice.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Mohammed, Radda expressed shock over the incident and extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, the Islamic community and others affected by the loss.

He called on security agencies to intensify efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure that the perpetrators were apprehended.

“Those behind this heinous act must be brought to justice. I urge the relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that the perpetrators face the full weight of the law,” the governor said.

Radda also appealed to residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies and provide credible information that could assist the investigation.

He cautioned against actions capable of escalating tensions or undermining peace in the state.

The governor described the late cleric as a religious leader whose teachings centred on the Qur’an, peaceful coexistence and understanding among people of different faiths.

Masussuka, who was popularly known by the alias “Peace Ambassador,” had previously drawn the attention of the Katsina State Government over his preaching.

The state authorities had received complaints that his sermons departed from general principles of Islamic law, and he separately complained that he faced insults and threats from members of the Jama’atu Izalatil Bidia Wa’ikhamatus Sunna.

The dispute was referred to the Katsina Emirate Council, and Radda subsequently directed him to appear before a committee of Ulamas to respond to the allegations.

Dutsin-Ma, like several local government areas in Katsina State, has in recent years recorded repeated attacks blamed on armed bandits, including kidnappings and killings targeting residents, vigilantes and security operatives.

Kwankwaso condemns killing

Former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, condemned the killing of Masussuka, expressing concern over the growing attacks on religious scholars and other innocent citizens.

Kwankwaso, in a post on his verified X account on Tuesday, described the continued killings as disturbing and called for decisive action to protect citizens and restore security.

“I am saddened by the death of Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka, whose passing adds to the growing concern over the disturbing attacks and killings of religious scholars and other innocent citizens by gunmen in our society,” he said.

The former governor said the targeting of religious scholars was particularly troubling because of their role in promoting Islamic teachings, moral values, peaceful coexistence and the spiritual development of communities.

He condemned the violence and called for stronger efforts to protect lives and ensure that those responsible for the killings were brought to justice.

“I strongly condemn the senseless violence against citizens. The continued loss of lives to insecurity is unacceptable and underscores the urgent need for decisive action to protect our people, bring the perpetrators to justice, and restore peace and security across the country,” Kwankwaso said.

He also extended his condolences to the cleric’s family, students, associates and the wider Muslim community over the loss.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, students, associates, and the entire Muslim community over this loss,” he added.
