Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 1992 Senate Campaign Poster: A Historic Entry into Nigerian Politics

Published

on

In 1992, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, now Nigeria’s president, took his first bold step into politics by contesting for the Lagos West Senatorial District seat under the Social Democratic Party (SDP). One of the enduring relics of that period is his campaign poster, a piece of political history that marks the beginning of his remarkable journey from a first-time candidate to the presidency.

The Campaign Poster

The poster carried a clear and assertive slogan: “YOUR ASSERTIVE VOICE IN THE SENATE.” This phrase was not just a campaign catchphrase but a promise to Lagosians that Tinubu would represent them with courage, boldness, and an independent spirit in the Senate.

The design of the poster, typical of early 1990s Nigerian political campaigns, featured a simple yet commanding portrait of Tinubu. It reflected both his corporate background and his emerging image as a politician who wanted to challenge the status quo.

The Political Context of 1992

Tinubu’s campaign came during Nigeria’s Third Republic, a period when General Ibrahim Babangida’s military government experimented with a transition to democracy. Two political parties were officially recognized: the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the National Republican Convention (NRC). Tinubu chose the SDP, a party known for its progressive outlook, aligning himself with a tradition that had deep roots in Lagos politics.

At the time, Tinubu was a relatively unknown figure in Nigerian politics. He had built his career in the corporate world, working as an auditor at Deloitte and later as an executive at Mobil Oil Nigeria. His entry into politics was largely influenced by Prince Tajudeen Olusi, a respected Lagos elder statesman who introduced him to the SDP structure.

Campaign Themes and Promise

The central promise of Tinubu’s campaign was to be the “assertive voice” of Lagos West. His agenda emphasized:

Representation of Lagosians at the federal level with vigor and confidence.

Advocacy for democracy and transparency in governance.

Defense of Lagos’ unique economic and cultural interests within the Nigerian federation.

This message resonated strongly with the electorate, especially in Lagos West, which was one of the most politically vibrant constituencies in the country.

Victory and Political Debut

The campaign was successful, and Tinubu won the election to become Senator representing Lagos West in 1992. His time in the Senate was cut short by the abrupt end of the Third Republic when the military annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election and dissolved democratic institutions.

However, Tinubu’s brief senatorial career cemented his political foundations. He was active in committees on banking, finance, and appropriations, quickly earning a reputation as a bold legislator.

Legacy of the Poster

The 1992 campaign poster now serves as a historical artifact of Tinubu’s political beginnings. It represents the moment when a man who would later become Governor of Lagos State (1999–2007) and eventually President of Nigeria (2023–present) first introduced himself to Nigerians as a politician.

From that first campaign promise to be an “assertive voice,” Tinubu has remained a dominant and often controversial voice in Nigerian politics. The poster captures not just an election season but the dawn of a political career that would span over three decades and redefine Nigeria’s democratic journey.

DON’T LET PEOPLE SEE YOU AS A BAD PERSON THEY NEED TO RUN AWAY FROM

Published

on

Your character speaks even when you are silent.

The way you treat people today can determine whether they will remember you with love or with pain. You may have money, position, influence, or success, but if your behavior constantly hurts, insults, deceives, or disrespects others, people may eventually choose to distance themselves from you.

The Bible says:

“A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”
— Proverbs 22:1 (KJV)

A good name is not built in one day. It is built through honesty, kindness, humility, forgiveness, respect, and good character.

Don’t become the person people are afraid to approach.
Don’t become the person friends secretly avoid.
Don’t become the person whose presence brings fear, tension, or sadness.

Instead, be someone whose presence brings peace, encouragement, wisdom, and love.

“If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”
— Romans 12:18 (KJV)

Nobody is perfect. We all make mistakes. But when you hurt someone, learn to say “I am sorry.” When you are wrong, learn to admit it. When someone needs help, be willing to help. When you have the opportunity to show kindness, don’t allow pride to stop you.

“Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
— Ephesians 4:32 (KJV)

Remember: People may forget your achievements, but they will often remember how you made them feel.

Let your life be a reason people are grateful to have known you—not a reason they are relieved to see you leave.

💭 Ask yourself:

If people were asked to describe your character today, what would they say?

❤️ Would they say you are kind?
🙏 Would they say you are trustworthy?
🤝 Would they say you bring peace?
💬 Or would they say they need to stay away from you?

You still have time to change the story. Choose kindness. Choose humility. Choose love. Choose to become a person people feel safe and blessed to have around.

“Let all your things be done with charity.”
— 1 Corinthians 16:14 (KJV)

💬 What do you think makes people distance themselves from someone they once loved or respected?

👇 Share your thoughts in the comments. Your answer may help someone reflect and change.

Be the kind of person people thank God for—not the kind they pray to escape from. ❤️

WHAT YOU DO TODAY WILL BECOME A STORY TOMORROW

Published

on

Every day, you are writing a chapter of your life.

The decisions you make today, the people you help, the words you speak, the sacrifices you make, and the way you treat others may become the stories people tell about you tomorrow.

Today may look ordinary, but tomorrow it may become a testimony.

The Bible says:

“For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
— Galatians 6:7 (KJV)

What are you planting today?
🌱 Kindness or hatred?
🌱 Wisdom or foolishness?
🌱 Hard work or laziness?
🌱 Love or bitterness?
🌱 Faith or fear?

Remember, every seed eventually produces a harvest.

“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
— Galatians 6:7 (KJV)

Joseph’s faithfulness in difficult times became part of his testimony. David’s courage became part of his story. Ruth’s loyalty became part of her legacy.

Your present actions are also shaping your future story.

You may not see the reward today. You may not receive appreciation today. You may even feel that nobody notices your sacrifices. But keep doing what is right. God sees the seeds you are planting.

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
— Galatians 6:9 (KJV)

One day, people may not remember what you owned, but they will remember how you lived, how you treated people, and the impact you made.

So live today in a way that gives tomorrow a beautiful story to tell.

CHILDREN WHO REFUSE HOME TRAINING MAY BE TRAINED BY THE WORLD OUTSIDE

Published

on

Parents, never underestimate the importance of home training.

The home is the first school where a child learns respect, honesty, discipline, responsibility, kindness, and the fear of God. When children refuse correction and parents stop providing proper guidance, the world will gladly teach them—but the lessons outside may come with painful consequences.

The Bible says:

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
— Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)

A child who refuses good advice at home may eventually learn from friends, society, social media, and the streets. Unfortunately, some of those lessons may not teach love and wisdom—they may teach pride, rebellion, bad habits, and wrong choices.

“Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.”
— Proverbs 22:15 (KJV)

Parents, don’t wait until your child learns life the hard way before you take responsibility. Correct with love. Teach with patience. Discipline with wisdom. Pray for your children. Be the example you want them to follow.

And children, understand this: Correction from a loving parent is not always rejection. Sometimes correction is protection.

“My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction.”
— Proverbs 3:11 (KJV)

🌱 A child who receives good training today has a better foundation for tomorrow.

Parents, what do you think?

👉 Is lack of home training one of the major reasons some children are easily influenced by the wrong people outside?
