Sowore gets three days to study DSS charges on Anti-Tinubu post

Published

on

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday granted former presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore three days to study the cybercrime charges filed against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Sowore was scheduled to be arraigned before Justice Mohammed Garba on Tuesday, but the proceedings were stalled due to the non-service of the charges on him.

He and his co-defendants were to be docked for allegedly making false posts about President Bola Tinubu with the intent to cause a breakdown of law and order. The other defendants are X and Meta Platforms (Facebook), listed as the second and third defendants, respectively.

The DSS, as plaintiff, filed a five-count criminal charge (FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025) accusing Sowore of using his official X handle, @YeleSowore, to post defamatory content about President Tinubu.

In one of the alleged posts, Sowore reportedly wrote: “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

The charge claims the post violated Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition and Prevention) Act 2024 and was made on August 25, 2025, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court.

Count two alleges that Sowore posted the same message on his official Facebook page on August 26, 2025, intending to incite public disorder, particularly among Nigerians with divergent views about President Tinubu.

Counts three and four accuse him of publishing defamatory material against the president through his X and Facebook accounts, contrary to Section 375 of the Criminal Code.

Count five alleges that Sowore, intending to cause public fear and disturbance, published false information harming the reputation of the president, contrary to Section 59 of the Criminal Code Act.

At Tuesday’s sitting, Sowore’s lead counsel, Abubakar Marshall, protested that his client had not been served with the charges, as required by law. He also noted that the second defendant had not been served, making the arraignment improper.

Counsel for the Federal Government, Mohammed Babadoko Abubakar, Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation (DPPF), insisted that Sowore had been served.

However, Justice Garba, after reviewing the case file, confirmed that service had not been effected.

The DPPF applied to serve Sowore in open court, which the judge allowed.

Sowore accepted the documents and requested three days to study the charges and prepare his defense, as provided by law.

Despite objections from the DPPF, Justice Garba upheld the request and adjourned the arraignment to October 27.

“The court will adjourn to the 27th day of October for the arraignment of the defendants,” he said.

While the second defendant, X, had no legal representation, Professor Tayo Oyetibo (SAN) represented Meta Platforms (Facebook), the third defendant.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Air Force, Kabiru Alhassan, has expressed concern over the reported crash of a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft in Ondo State, urging Nigerians to remain calm as rescue efforts continue.

Alhassan, in a message of solidarity issued on Tuesday, said he was deeply saddened by the incident involving the aircraft, which was reportedly carrying 32 passengers and crew.

He said the status of those on board had yet to be confirmed as emergency responders and security agencies continued rescue operations at the crash site.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the passengers, crew members, their families and loved ones at this difficult moment,” he said.

The lawmaker commended the Nigerian Air Force, security agencies, emergency responders and other personnel involved in the operation for their prompt response.

He expressed hope that those on board would be found safe, urging Nigerians to remain calm and prayerful while the rescue operation continues.

“I earnestly pray and remain hopeful that those on board will be found safe,” Alhassan said.

He also appealed to members of the public to avoid spreading unverified information, saying authorities were still working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and account for everyone on board.

The incident comes amid growing concern over aviation safety following previous aircraft emergencies involving both military and civilian operations in the country.

The Nigerian Air Force is expected to provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the crash and the outcome of the rescue operation as information becomes available.

Ondo air crash: DHQ orders probe as rescue operations continue

Published

on

The Defence Headquarters has ordered an investigation into the crash of a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, Ondo State, as search and rescue operations continue at the scene.

The aircraft, on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos, carried military personnel and some family members, according to the DHQ.

The incident, which occurred near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, has thrown the military community into mourning, with the Defence Headquarters describing the mishap as a painful loss to the Armed Forces and the nation.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Director, Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Samaila Uba, said the investigation was being conducted in compliance with the directive of the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Tinubu, to establish the cause of the accident.

“In compliance with the directive of the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Tinubu, an investigation will be conducted to ascertain the cause of the accident, while Search and Rescue efforts by the NAF in collaboration with sister Services and emergency agencies continue at the site,” the statement said.

Uba said it received the news of the crash with “deep shock” and extended condolences to the families and loved ones of all persons involved.

The DHQ also commiserated with the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, the Nigerian Air Force and the entire Armed Forces family.

“This is indeed a painful loss to the entire Armed Forces and the nation at large. Our personnel give their all daily to keep Nigeria safe. Their courage and sacrifices will never be forgotten,” Uba said.

The military authorities assured Nigerians that the incident would not deter the Armed Forces from carrying out their constitutional responsibility of securing the country.

“The leadership of the Armed Forces wishes to assure all Nigerians that the Armed Forces will remain resolute and committed to our constitutional mandate of securing the nation, despite this painful setback. The sacrifice of our fallen heroes will continue to inspire our service to the nation,” the statement added.

The DHQ also appealed to the public to refrain from speculation and respect the privacy of the families affected by the incident while official procedures continue.

It said, “We appeal to the general public to refrain from speculation and to respect the privacy of the families affected in this difficult moment while official procedures continue.”

The ATR-42 aircraft type is a twin-engine turboprop commonly used for short-haul passenger, transport and specialised operations. The NAF operates aircraft for a range of missions, including personnel movement, logistics, surveillance and other military assignments.

However, the DHQ statement did not disclose the number of people on board, the extent of casualties or the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The military said search and rescue operations involving the NAF, sister Services and emergency agencies were ongoing, while the investigation would determine what led to the accident.

The DHQ prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed and for God to grant their families the strength to bear the loss.
