‘World’s oldest baby’ born in Ohio from 30-year-old frozen embryo

Published

on

A baby boy born in Ohio last week is being called the “world’s oldest baby” after being delivered from an embryo that had been frozen for more than 30 years.

Thaddeus Daniel Pierce was born on July 26 via adopted IVF to Lindsey and Tim Pierce, a couple from London, Ohio. The embryo had been frozen since May 1994, according to MIT Technology Review.

“We had a rough birth, but we are both doing well now,” said Lindsey, 34. “He is so chill. We are in awe that we have this precious baby.”

Lindsey noted that her husband Tim, 35, was just a toddler when Thaddeus’s embryo was first created. “The baby has a 30-year-old sister,” she added, referencing the biological daughter born from the same embryo batch in 1994.

The Pierces said they were stunned to learn that adopting embryos was even possible. “We thought it was wild,” said Lindsey. “We didn’t know they froze embryos that long ago. We didn’t go into it thinking we would break any records. We just wanted to have a baby.”

To complete the IVF process, the couple traveled from Ohio to Tennessee.

The embryo originated from Lydia Archerd, now 62, who, along with her then-husband, had frozen four embryos in the early 1990s after struggling to conceive. One of the embryos was successfully implanted in a surrogate named Linda, who gave birth to a healthy baby girl in 1994. That daughter is now 30 and has a 10-year-old of her own.

The remaining three embryos stayed cryogenically frozen. Despite divorcing and never having another child, Archerd continued paying $1,000 annually to preserve them. “I always wanted another baby desperately,” she said. “I called them my three little hopes.”

Eventually, after reaching menopause, Archerd decided to donate the embryos through the Nightlight Christian Adoptions agency’s “embryo adoption” program, which allows both donors and recipients to meet.

“It’s been pretty surreal,” Archerd said. “It’s hard to even believe.”

Now, she’s looking forward to meeting Thaddeus and believes he already resembles her daughter. “The first thing I noticed when Lindsey sent me his pictures is how much he looks like my daughter when she was a baby,” Archerd said. “I pulled out my baby book and compared them side by side — and there is no doubt that they are siblings.”

PHOTOS: Kano women, girls take to streets, protest repeated killings, thuggery

Published

on

Some frustrated women and young girls in Kano have taken their protest to Kofar Mata metropolis, an area known for brutal thuggery and killings over incessant loss of lives to the menace.

The women who trooped out on Saturday, demanded an urgent end to the violence that has cost the lives of their children and siblings.

Chanting slogans and holding placards, the protesters marched through the streets, calling on authorities to take decisive action.

A woman at the protest lamented that “our sons are dying for no reason. Every day, there is a fight, a killing, a stabbing,” said one grieving mother at the scene.

“We can’t continue like this,” another woman said.

In recent months, Kano State has witnessed a disturbing surge in street violence, with thuggery, phone snatching, and gang clashes becoming alarmingly common.

On Friday August 1st and 31st July 2025, there were reported thug clashes along that area.

A medical personnel in the area, Sadiya Umar said that I just passed the area today and I heard teargas and I think I heard gunshots too.

She said: “We were terrified, but I didn’t hear of the death of anyone.”

The growing insecurity has led to the loss of lives, especially among young people caught in the crossfire of gang rivalries.

One of the most shocking recent incidents occurred in Nassarawa Local Government Area, where a group of phone snatchers was struck by a vehicle shortly after robbing pedestrians at knifepoint.

A video of the incident, widely shared online, shows the suspects being overpowered by angry residents, beaten severely before being handed over to the police.

This kind of public reaction is becoming more frequent.

Many residents, frustrated by what they perceive as slow official response, have taken matters into their own hands—apprehending suspects and torture them before handing them to law enforcement agents.

In response to the deteriorating security situation, the Kano State Police Command launched Operation Kukan Kura in early 2025.

The initiative targets phone snatching gangs and violent youth groups known locally as ‘Yan Daba’.

Since its launch, the operation has led to several arrests and increased patrols in known crime hotspots.

The police say the operation is already yielding results, as frequently shared on the Facebook page of the force’s spokesman, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa.

However residents believe more sustained efforts are needed.

The second suspect, Emmanuel Mendie Peter, was apprehended at the SWAT office while attempting to offer the N800,000 bribe to secure Isaac’s release.
