Wale Edun, Ailing finance minister flown abroad for treatment

Published

on

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has travelled to the United Kingdom to seek medical attention, multiple sources close to the development confirmed on Tuesday morning.

The report, first published by Western Post, was confirmed by a source who had earlier told The PUNCH that the minister might seek medical attention abroad if the need arises.

The source confirmed on Tuesday that the decision had now been made, saying, “It’s true, he has left already.”

Edun left Abuja for Lagos on Monday night via a commercial flight.

He later departed for London aboard a British Airways flight on the same night.

Until his departure, Presidency officials who spoke to our correspondent on Sunday had maintained that Edun was recuperating at his Abuja residence under the care of Nigerian doctors.

The sources said the minister had taken ill in recent days but dismissed earlier rumours that he had suffered a stroke or was incapacitated.

One senior government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity for lack of authorisation to speak to the press on the matter, told The PUNCH that Edun’s condition was being monitored closely.

“Yes, he’s indisposed. He’s sick, which is a bit serious, but it’s not a stroke. As I’m talking to you, he’s in his house. He’s not been flown anywhere,” the source had said on Sunday evening.

The official, however, added that doctors might recommend foreign medical care if necessary, a decision that has now been made.

Another aide familiar with the matter confirmed that Edun’s medical situation had prompted closer attention from the President but stressed that “there are no plans to replace him.”

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, also confirmed that the minister had fallen ill but was initially receiving treatment in Nigeria.

“Yes, he’s indisposed. Wale Edun is about 69 years old. He suddenly fell ill. As we are talking, he is in Nigeria. He is recuperating. He’s around,” Onanuga said on Sunday.

The Presidency had earlier debunked speculation that President Bola Tinubu was considering a replacement for the finance minister.

However, it confirmed that the minister would miss this year’s World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C.

According to a statement by Onanuga, the Central Bank Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, would instead lead Nigeria’s delegation to the global finance meetings, which begin today, Tuesday, October 14.

Appointed on August 28, 2023, Edun has been a key figure in the Tinubu administration’s economic reform drive, overseeing the removal of petrol subsidies, unification of foreign exchange rates, and fiscal measures aimed at stabilising the naira and curbing inflation.

He served as Lagos State Commissioner for Finance under Tinubu’s administration between 1999 and 2004 and later co-founded investment banking firm Denham Management Limited.

At the time of this report, the Ministry of Finance had yet to issue an official statement on the minister’s whereabouts.

PHOTOS: Scientists discover 1,300-year-old Jesus bread

Published

on

Archaeologists at Topraktepe, a mound in southern Turkey identified with the early Byzantine city of Irenopolis, unearthed five carbonized bread loaves dating to the seventh or eighth century CE.

One of the unearthed loaves carried an image of Christ portrayed as a sower scattering grain and an ancient Greek inscription reading,”With our gratitude to Blessed Jesus”.

The remaining four loaves show cross-shaped imprints, further suggesting they were used in early Christian rituals as Eucharistic or communion bread.

The Topraktepe loaves, preserved with exceptional clarity, provided tangible evidence of how early Christians enacted their devotion through everyday objects like bread.

Topraktepe, also known as the “City of Peace,” served as an important bishopric center during the Roman and Byzantine periods.

Researchers said the objects likely served as communion loaves for a rural Anatolian congregation that depended on its crops.

“These 1,300-year-old breads shed new light on a fascinating chapter of early Byzantine life. They prove that piety extended beyond prayers and ceremonies, materializing in objects that carried spiritual significance to the most basic human need: bread,” a member of the excavation team said.

The loaves survived because an abrupt fire carbonized them, locking in their form and decoration.

Provincial authorities called them “among the best-preserved examples identified in Anatolia to date,” according to a communiqué relayed by Posta.

Material culture at Topraktepe already included necropolises, rock-cut chambers, and fortifications, but few artifacts spoke so directly to everyday devotion.

“This is evaluated as indicating the symbolic importance of abundance and labor in the religious understanding of the period,” the statement added.

Officials also noted that such provincial evidence differed from urban practice in Constantinople, emphasizing how rural worship remained intertwined with agriculture.

Archaeologists plan chemical and botanical analyses to learn which grains and leavening agents the bakers employed and to determine whether the loaves were leavened prosphora or served another liturgical purpose such as antidoron. They also hope to locate a nearby chapel that might have stored the bread.

“The survival of Eucharistic bread from the seventh and eighth centuries is extremely rare, making the loaves from Topraktepe a unique window into primitive Christian worship,” the research team concluded.

US drops out of World’s most powerful passport Top 10 list for the first time

Published

on

For the first time in the 20-year history of the Henley Passport Index, the United States passport has fallen out of the top 10 global ranking of travel mobility. The ranking is compiled by the global citizenship and residence advisory firm Henley & Partners, using exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association.

Three Asian passports now lead the index: Singapore (193 visa-free destinations), South Korea (190 destinations), Japan (189 destinations).

The US is now positioned in 12th place, tied with Malaysia, offering visa-free access to 180 of the 227 destinations tracked.

The US passport, which held the No. 1 spot in 2014 and was still in the top 10 as recently as July of this year, has seen its standing decline due to several global access changes.

The descent of the US passport is attributed to a series of reciprocal and unilateral policy shifts by other nations: Brazil withdrew visa-free access for US citizens in April due to a lack of reciprocity.

China expanded its visa exemption policies for several European nations (like Germany and France) but did not include the US. New policies in Papua New Guinea and Myanmar reduced the US passport’s mobility relative to others.

The final changes included Somalia’s launch of a new eVisa system and Vietnam’s exclusion of the US from its latest visa-free additions.

Christian H. Kaelin, chair of Henley & Partners, stated that this decline “signals a fundamental shift in global mobility and soft power dynamics,” where “Nations that embrace openness and cooperation are surging ahead, while those resting on past privilege are being left behind.” The UK passport has also dropped, falling two places since July to its lowest-ever position at 8th.

In contrast to the US decline, other nations have made significant gains:

China has climbed sharply from 94th place in 2015 to 64th in 2025, gaining visa-free access to 37 more destinations. The UAE is noted as one of the biggest success stories, having risen 34 places in the past decade, from No. 42 to 8th place.

At the bottom of the list, Afghanistan remains in last place at No. 106, with visa-free access to just 24 destinations.

The US’s decline is also seen as a reflection of its “limited openness.” While US citizens can travel to 180 destinations visa-free, the US allows only 46 nationalities to enter without a visa, a disparity that is one of the widest globally.

This retreat in international engagement has led to a surge in demand from Americans for alternative residence and citizenship options. Despite the fall in rankings, experts still note that the top passports remain highly desirable, with the difference for the average person being minimal.

The Henley list is one of several indices measuring passport power. Arton Capital’s Passport Index for 2025 places the United Arab Emirates in the top spot.

Okpebholo directs Edo cabinet members to wear Tinubu-branded outfits

Published

on

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has directed members of his cabinet to openly show their support for President Bola Tinubu by wearing branded outfits bearing the president’s insignia.

The governor gave the directive on Tuesday while swearing in newly appointed commissioners and inaugurating commissions and boards of agencies in Benin.

Okpebholo, who attributed his electoral victory to Tinubu’s support, said loyalty to the president must reflect even in appearance.

He said, “This could not have happened if we did not have a responsible president. We have done many elections here, and the major problem we have had is that the president is not with us, but today we say thank you.

“I will not forgive any commissioner that is not wearing this cap. In our exco meetings, if you are not wearing a suit and you are coming to the meeting without this Asiwaju cap, you will go back.”

The governor urged the commissioners to see their appointments as a call to serve the people rather than an opportunity for self-enrichment.

He also said he would not tolerate corruption in the government, adding that their appointment is not for self-enrichment.

The governor said, “You have been carefully screened and confirmed by the State House of Assembly purely on merit. Your nominations did not come as a reward or patronage, but as a call to serve the people of Edo State.”

He stressed that his administration’s focus is on “practical governance,” not propaganda, and that their performance would be measured by tangible results across the state.

He added, “While I congratulate you on your deserved elevation, I want to warn that your appointment is not for personal enrichment. You are not here for money-making, but for service, for sacrifice, and for a better life for Edo people.”

“I hereby call on you to brace up for action, as your success will be measured by your impact in bringing about better services and opportunities to our people.

“May I remind you that this administration has zero tolerance for corruption and you’re expected to display discipline, teamwork, and a shared sense of purpose.

“Most importantly, I expect loyalty to the people of Edo State. You must always remember that History will judge us for our actions and not our intentions.”

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), was among the dignitaries present at the event.
