The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has said a drug trafficking cartel abandoned two Sienna buses conveying 1,455 kg of cannabis along the Okhokho-Isi Community Road in the Uhunmwode Local Government Area of the state.
This was contained in a statement released by the state commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, on Monday.
The seizure took place on October 29, 2025, at approximately 3:00 a.m., when a team of dedicated officers intercepted two Toyota Sienna buses suspected of transporting a substantial quantity of narcotics along the Okhokho-Isi community route in the Uhunmwode Local Government Area.
The statement read, “The seizure took place on October 29, 2025, at approximately 3:00 am, when a team of dedicated officers intercepted two Toyota Sienna buses suspected of transporting a substantial quantity of narcotics along the Okhokho-ISI community route in the Uhunmwode Local Government Area.”
“Both buses were said to have commenced their journey at Okpuje, a community that is notorious for cannabis cultivation and trafficking.
“The first vehicle, a light blue Toyota Sienna with registration number EPE 545 EV, was found to be carrying an impressive 666 kilograms of dried weeds suspected to be cannabis sativa.
“Following this, a dark ash Toyota Sienna bearing registration number ABC 142 CD was also intercepted, containing 789 kilogrammes of the same illicit substance.
“Unfortunately, no suspects were apprehended during the operation, as the individuals responsible deserted the vehicles and made a hasty escape, leaving the substantial drug exhibits behind.
“The NDLEA is actively pursuing leads and conducting thorough investigations aimed at bringing these traffickers to justice,” he added.
Ofoyeju issued a stern warning to drug traffickers operating in the region, noting that the ongoing investigations signify “our relentless approach towards eradicating drug trafficking in Edo State.”
He stated that those who think they can evade the law and exploit communities through illicit drug trade should think again, noting “we are prepared and committed to enforcing the law with unprecedented measures against harmful substances and their distributors.”
The commander reassured the public that the NDLEA remains vigilant in its patrols and operational capacity, emphasising collaboration with local communities to ensure safety and a drug abuse-free society.
He encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking, ensuring they play an integral role in the fight against drugs in Edo State.
Ofoyeju urged individuals involved in drug trafficking to cease their illegal activities immediately, as the agency would not relent in its quest to promote a drug-free environment in Edo State.
He added, “The fight against drug abuse and trafficking is a shared responsibility, and with collective effort, a brighter, safer future is our collective target.”
The PUNCH reports that the Edo NDLEA last Tuesday said it arrested 39 suspected drug traffickers in October, with 2,447.59 kg of illicit drugs.
The command has burnt several cannabis farms in the state while also conducting enlightenment programmes across the state to dissuade residents from using and abusing hard drugs.
