Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta marked his 250th game in charge of a single Premier League club in Monday’s 1-0 away win against Aston Villa.

A 59th-minute strike from Bukayo Saka sealed the victory for the Gunners as they maintained a perfect two wins in their first two games of the new campaign.

According to BBC Sport on Tuesday, Arteta now ranks among the top 10 managers who have managed at least 250 games at a single EPL club.

The Spaniard, also a former Arsenal player, has recorded 151 wins, 48 draws and 51 losses, thereby amassing a 60.4 per cent win rate.

He only comes behind former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola (70.8%), Manchester United’s Alex Ferguson (65.2%) and ex-Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp (62.6%).

At the full-time whistle at Villa Park on Monday night, the North London supporters chanted Arteta’s name.

On reaching the milestone with the win, Arteta said, “I’m extremely grateful. It starts to be a big number!

“So I’m really grateful for all the support, the love that I feel from all of them, and yeah, really great to celebrate with a win.”

He reflected on the team’s game against Aston Villa, where they lost last season as the Gunners were crowned EPL champions after 22 years.

Labelling the win as a collective effort, Arteta said he felt “extremely happy,” adding, “It’s a really tough place to come and win; when we came here last year, we lost with the last kick of the game. I think we still had that in our tummies.

“I would define it as a squad victory – I think everybody contributed in a really great way. We’ve been wanting that need in the final third to find the openings and to be more clinical and finish more actions. I’m really pleased because that’s exactly what we need.

“I’m very proud, because these guys won the Europa League again. They have a really good stadium where they can create momentum and shift and change the feelings immediately, and we did it, and I think it’s a big win.”

The result also extended Arsenal’s impressive away record, with the Gunners winning their opening away league match in each of the last five seasons.

For Villa, the defeat extended their difficult start to the campaign, with Unai Emery’s side still yet to register a shot on target in the EPL this season.

Ailing Novak Djokovic suffered his earliest Grand Slam exit in 20 years on Sunday, falling in five brutal sets to Mariano Navone in the first round of the US Open.

The 48th-ranked Argentine’s 7-6 (7/5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory ended Djokovic’s latest bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title, the monumental achievement looking ever less likely for the 39-year-old.

It also ended his run of 78 Grand Slam first-round victories, a streak stretching all the way back to Djokovic’s 2006 loss to Paul Goldstein at the 2006 Australian Open.

“I think it was obvious that it was an awful feeling on the court for me,” said Djokovic, who vomited several times and battled late-match cramps.

“It’s something that I’ve been carrying, unfortunately, pretty much every match this year. Vomiting, throwing up, a serious issue there. Then my whole body starts to collapse, basically cramping and pain.

“The back just gave up in the end and shoulder, I couldn’t close it out.”

Djokovic, who took medication during the match, appeared to have finally taken control when he broke Navone for a 2-1 lead in the fourth set with a vintage backhand winner down the line.

But Navone won the next five games, raising his arms in celebration after fighting off two break points for a 5-2 lead and breaking Djokovic again to force the fifth.

Djokovic took a medical timeout before the final set, receiving a massage on his spine and more medication.

But Navone jumped to a 3-0 lead in the decisive set, and despite the urging of fans, there was no road back for the Serb as his opponent dropped just one point on his own serve as he sprinted to the finish line.

Djokovic, a four-time US Open champion, had never lost before the third round in Flushing Meadows, but he’d shown signs of frailty in his only tune-up, struggling physically in losing his opening match in Cincinnati.

Even as he grabbed a 4-1 lead in the first set, Djokovic was clearly not himself. Every rally left him gasping, and he finally surrendered the set with a dismal forehand into the net.

In a tense second set, Djokovic missed break chances in the third and fifth games before breaking Navone at love for a 6-5 lead and holding at love to level the match at one set apiece.

The third set was more of the same, Djokovic seizing the crucial break in the ninth game and fending off a break point in the next for a two-set-to-one lead.

That put paid to any thought he’d had of retiring.

“I have, I have,” he said when asked if he’d thought of throwing in the towel. “But then I won a set and then the third. I didn’t want to give up.”

Determination wasn’t enough. He was 2-1 up in the fourth set when the cramps struck and lost eight games in a row.

– Pegula, Medvedev advance –

Djokovic departed to cheers nearly 12 hours after world number three Jessica Pegula conquered her first-round nerves to dispatch Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 6-2.

Pegula broke Romania’s Ruse twice in each set, but it was less straightforward than the score indicated as the 32-year-old veteran felt the weight of opening the action on the cavernous Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“Oh yeah, I was so nervous today, always the first round of a slam,” said Pegula, who has won two titles this year and reached three other finals.

Her consistent high level means she could capture not only a first Grand Slam title but also the world number one ranking.

Seventh-seeded former champion Daniil Medvedev also advanced with a serene 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 victory over France’s Hugo Gaston.

It was a far cry from Medvedev’s meltdown in a first-round loss last year and a heartening performance in another year of mixed results for the Russian.

“I felt like I did everything I wanted to do well,” he said.

But there was plenty of drama elsewhere.

Dino Prizmic saved two match points in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 victory over Aleksandr Shevchenko.

And Spaniard Jaume Munar needed nearly five hours to secure a 6-7 (5/7), 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 victory over Frenchman Terence Atmane.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has dismissed suggestions of a good relationship between Chelsea and his club despite a series of transfers between the two Premier League sides.

Emiliano Martinez completed his move from Villa to Chelsea on Sunday, becoming the eighth player to move between the clubs in the past four years.

The Argentina goalkeeper’s transfer came just days after Nicolas Jackson moved in the opposite direction, joining Villa from Chelsea.

No two Premier League clubs have exchanged more players on permanent or loan deals during that period.\

However, Emery insisted the frequent transfer activity should not be viewed as evidence of a close relationship between the clubs.

As reported by BBC Sport on Monday, Emery was quoted as saying, “Good relations?” Emery said. “They want to kill us and we want to kill them!

“We have good players and we can sign one player off them, it’s not a good relationship, it’s a deal for money and a deal for players.

“I am happy for Emiliano Martinez and Morgan Rogers and I know I am not happy for Chelsea.”

The series of deals began after Chelsea’s owners, BlueCo, took control of the club in 2022, with Carney Chukwuemeka moving from Villa to Chelsea for £20m that summer.

Since then, Ian Maatsen joined Villa for £37.5m, while Omari Kellyman moved to Chelsea for £19m. Axel Disasi also joined Villa on a loan deal worth £5m.

Four more deals have taken place this summer.

Morgan Rogers completed a £117m move to Chelsea, while Alejandro Garnacho joined Villa on loan with a conditional obligation to buy in a deal worth around £43m.

Jackson then moved to Villa for £65m before Martinez followed him to Chelsea.

Chelsea have paid Villa £163.5m for players since 2022, while Villa have spent £102.5m on Chelsea players, including Disasi’s loan fee.

That figure could rise to £150.5m if certain conditions are met for Garnacho’s move to become permanent, with Chelsea believing those criteria are easily reachable.
