Iyabo Obasanjo declares for Ogun governorship race

Published

on

Prof Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has declared her intention to run for the 2027 Governorship race of Ogun State under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

She declared her intention in an interview with Nigerian legend Segun Odegbami on his 103.7FM Eagle7 Sports, monitored by our correspondent in Abeokuta on Saturday.

The Former Commissioner ruled out going back to the Senate, saying she is running for the state’s governorship seat.

Her words, “So moving ahead, I’m not going to be Commissioner. Like I said, I’m not even going back to the same party because I think that’s old and I don’t see the use of it. And I’m not going to go back to the Senate.

“Like the American would say, there’s no need. And this is what I told my associates, when this all started. I said, the only thing I’ll come back to do is the governorship.

“And we have started that journey. We are going to see it through. And so that’s the journey I’m on. And we are very serious about it. I mean we are very dedicated to it,” she said.

It was reported that Iyabo on Saturday, confirmed joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), maintaining that she is returning to politics after “pressure” from her supporters.

“Like I told you, a group of people who I did not bring together, have been working, I think, for two years now. And then they started talking to me about a year ago, saying, ‘Look, we think you are the best candidate. We want you back,’” she added.

2027: Kwankwaso supporters propose Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket

Published

on

The Kwankwaso Support Group 2027 has proposed a joint presidential ticket pairing former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, with Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso.

Speaking in Kano on Friday, the leader of the group, Abba Gwale, stated that as loyal supporters of Senator Kwankwaso, they found it necessary to appeal to Nigerians to support the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance, describing it as a chance to rescue the nation from its current challenges.

“As Kwankwaso supporters and loyalists, we have proposed and thrown our weight behind the joint presidential ticket, especially with Peter Obi, in any of the political parties. The current political trajectory has shown where the tide is shifting.

“If the duo gets a mandate in the upcoming election, Nigeria will be a better place. For real, we’re tired of insecurity, hunger, and starvation.

“We want a political alliance to bring together Obi’s strong support base in the South and Kwankwaso’s formidable support in the North, creating a powerful coalition that could potentially shake up the political landscape. With this partnership, the duo is poised to give the ruling party a run for their money.

“At the heart of this alliance is a shared ambition to wrestle power from the ruling APC and bring about meaningful change to Nigeria. Both Obi and Kwankwaso have consistently emphasised their commitment to assisting the common man in Nigeria, and their partnership is seen as a key step towards achieving this goal,” he said.

Gwale, who hails from the same constituency as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, further explained that the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket is banking on a wave of popular discontent with the current administration, adding that their message of hope and change is resonating with many Nigerians. He added that with their combined strength, they are emerging as a formidable challenger to the ruling party.

“As 2027 approaches, all eyes are on the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance to see how they will capitalise on this momentum and translate it into votes. One thing is certain — the duo is determined to shake things up and bring about a new era of politics in Nigeria,” Gwale added.

On Kwankwaso’s alleged demands for a significant number of positions from the ruling APC as part of joining the party, Gwale noted that if there were anything like that, it should be seen as outrageous, given the calibre of the former governor.

According to him, Kwankwaso has presented the best demands that can cater to the needs of his supporters and party members across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

“Supporters of Kwankwaso cut across every divide, especially among ordinary Nigerians who are living from hand to mouth,” Gwale added.

2027: Rivers supporters don’t need governor to mobilise for Tinubu — Wike

Published

on

The Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has declared that supporters of President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State do not require the backing of a sitting governor to mobilise for the president’s re-election bid in 2027.

Wike made the statement on Saturday in Port Harcourt during the commissioning of the Rivers State Renewed Hope Ambassadors headquarters, which houses Majority FM 89.5, a situation room, office facilities and operational buses.

Speaking at the event, the minister praised the coordinator of the Rivers State Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, for what he described as extensive grassroots mobilisation across the state. He said Rivers State was firmly positioned to deliver support for Tinubu in the next general election.

“Desmond Akawor, you have shown enough capacity to mobilise, you have moved to all the nooks and crannies of Rivers to talk about Tinubu for President in 2027,” Wike said.

Reiterating his long-held position on the state’s political alignment, Wike added, “I have said before that Rivers State is a no-go area, and I want to say again that this State is totally for Tinubu. We have made sure that all the 23 local governments and zonal coordinators were inaugurated, that day Nigerians all over the world watched that Rivers State is a no-go area.”

The former Rivers State governor described the commissioning of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors’ facilities as unprecedented in the region and challenged critics to assess the level of organisation on the ground.

“I challenge anybody, let them come to Rivers State and learn, our commitment is not by mouth, our commitment is not by newspaper, ours is by showing, that yes indeed, we are working for the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.

Wike stressed that political support in the state was being driven internally by elected officials and party leaders rather than external influence.

According to him, “We don’t need to have a governor to mobilise for Mr President, we don’t need, we have all it takes to be on our own, we have senators, assembly people, council chairman, National Assembly members, party chairmen of APC and PDP, we have mobilised ourselves to make commitment.”

He thanked supporters for what he described as visible dedication and recalled the 2023 elections as a turning point for the state’s political direction.

“In 2023, we came out without anybody pressuring us, without anybody influencing us, we took a decision, to the glory of God that decision is what we are enjoying today,” Wike said, adding that continued support for Tinubu in 2027 was non-negotiable if the president declared his intention to run.

The minister also urged the Renewed Hope Ambassadors to deepen their structure at the grassroots. “Mr Coordinator, you have to start preparing to inaugurate ward and unit coordinators. We must also take it down to the units, to go and talk to our people to continue to support Mr President, go and see the situation room, go and see the radio station. We are battle-ready, there is nothing we can not do because unity is strength,” he said.

Earlier in his remarks, Akawor welcomed Wike and attendees to the event, commending the minister for providing leadership to the Rivers State Renewed Hope Ambassadors movement.

He disclosed that coordinators had been appointed across all 23 local government areas of the state and described Wike’s political approach as a distinct style he referred to as AI politics.

PDP crisis: Makinde camp fumes as INEC recognises Wike bloc

Published

on

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated on Thursday following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s recognition of a caretaker committee backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The move triggered outrage within the camp loyal to the PDP governors, led by Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as national chairman of the party.

On Thursday, the caretaker committee, led by Abdulrahman Mohammed and caretaker secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, were invited for the quarterly meeting of the political parties with the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The PUNCH noted that Mohammed occupied a front-row seat designated “PDP Chairman,” while Anyanwu sat behind him on a seat labelled “PDP National Secretary.”

After the closed-door session, Anyanwu told journalists, “Yes, we were invited yesterday as the recognised leadership of the PDP, and we are here to participate in this crucial consultative meeting between INEC and political parties to deliberate on party matters and electoral issues.

“The recent court judgment has effectively resolved the crisis that had been affecting the PDP. The party’s leadership remains intact under Abdulrahman Mohammed and me, and we are fully prepared to reposition the party ahead of future elections.”

He said the PDP would present a candidate in the 2027 election, adding that the caretaker committee was set to assume control of Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of the party, on Monday.

“Last Friday, as a matter of fact, the Federal High Court made it very clear that the problem of leadership is over, because the so-called convention of November 15th, 16th, 2025, is a nullity and that no other person should parade himself or herself as a member of the National Working Committee of the PDP.

“That the only recognised body of the PDP that has the full powers to speak for the party, to work for the party, is the National Working Committee led by Honourable Abdulrahman Mohammed.”

Explaining why the faction had not yet taken over the party headquarters, Anyanwu said legal and security issues needed to be resolved.

He added that a recent effort by the Turaki faction to use the police to prevent their access was overturned by the courts.

“Police took over the place, and then the other group went to court to ask the police to reopen, and the matter was dismissed because they had no locus. So, by Monday, we are taking over the office,” he said.

Anyanwu assured party supporters that resolving the crisis would enable the PDP to present candidates in the forthcoming elections.

He stated, “Party members are pleased, as concerns that the PDP might not field candidates in the upcoming elections have been resolved; the party will now present candidates across all positions.”

The governors aligned with the Turaki-led National Working Committee have, however, begun considering legal action, following the recognition of the Wike-backed caretaker committee by INEC.

The faction, in a statement through its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, criticised INEC for recognising the Wike-backed caretaker committee, calling the move unconstitutional and provocative.

Ememobong called on party members to stay peaceful and patient while awaiting the resolution of the ongoing court cases concerning the party’s leadership crisis.

The statement read, “We are aware that the Independent National Electoral Commission invited the leaders of political parties to a meeting today and extended the invitation to some former members of our party who are purporting to lead a so-called National Caretaker Committee to represent our party, whereas there is no such provision in our constitution.

“This action, though ordinarily vexatious and capable of causing a widespread breach of peace, will be met with all possible legal responses.

“Though not unexpected of this current INEC leadership, it is expected that an impartial umpire would have taken notice of the pendency of the matters in the Court of Appeal (including the judgment which they are relying upon), which, when decided, will effectively affect the subject under consideration, and exercised restraint therefrom.

“We can assure that INEC will not choose a leadership for our party.

“Consequently, we urge all our members to remain calm and hopeful that, soonest, the Court of Appeal will hear and determine all the cases concerning the leadership of our party.”

The Turaki-led NWC assured that the party would surmount all its challenges to present a more united party to Nigerians.

“We assure that the rebirth movement of our party, under the able leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), is steady and secure, and will ultimately surmount all these challenges to present a stronger and more united party to Nigerians as a credible alternative to the ruling party that has brought untold sorrows, tears, and blood to Nigerians,” Ememobong said.

On Friday, a Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, nullified the PDP national convention held on November 15, 2025, in Ibadan and directed Turaki (SAN) and several others who emerged at the convention to stop presenting themselves as national officers of the party.

Before the judgment, PDP governors had endorsed the Ibadan convention that elected Turaki and the members of the NWC for a four-year term.

Although the governors facilitated a transition from former chairman, Umar Damagum, to Turaki before Damagum’s tenure ended on December 9, the Wike-aligned camp established a 13-member caretaker committee on December 8, appointing Mohammed, Anyanwu, and others with a 60-day mandate.

Both the governors’ bloc and the Wike-aligned faction then approached INEC seeking official recognition, but the commission refused to acknowledge either side, leading to multiple legal disputes.

In response to Friday’s court ruling, the Turaki-led PDP NWC, through Ememobong, stated that its legal team had been instructed to file an immediate appeal and pursue all available legal remedies.

Meanwhile, the Wike-backed faction welcomed the judgment barring Turaki and others from acting as the party’s NWC, and pledged to organise a fresh convention to elect new members.

Anyanwu, speaking on behalf of the bloc, stated that the court’s ruling had effectively brought an end to the PDP’s internal crisis.
