APC primary disputes driven by ambition, not people’s interest — Ex- gov aspirant

Published

on

A former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in Kwara State, Prof. Wale Sulaiman, has described the lingering dispute over the party’s governorship primary as a struggle driven by personal ambition rather than the interest of the people, saying political leaders should focus on addressing the state’s developmental challenges instead of pursuing power.

Speaking in an interview with journalists on Thursday, he lamented that political discussions in the state had become centred on individual aspirations instead of policies capable of improving the lives of Kwarans.

Sulaiman said the ongoing agitation by some dissatisfied aspirants under the platform of the G-15 had diverted attention from pressing issues confronting residents, including insecurity, unemployment, poverty and poor infrastructure.

“I think it is rather unfortunate that we have grown men fighting like schoolchildren whose principal has denied them candy. The debate should be about the needs of our people, not about a sense of political entitlement,” he said.

According to him, the state’s political class should be presenting practical solutions to the challenges facing the people rather than engaging in post-primary disputes.

“Kwara is one of the states badly affected by insecurity. People have vacated their villages, farmers cannot go to their farms, women struggle to go to markets, and unemployment remains very high.

“Nobody has really come out to say, ‘This is how I will tackle insecurity, create jobs, improve education, or develop infrastructure.’ The debate has become about who wants to be governor because they want to be king,” he added.

The former APC governorship aspirant said he had always approached politics from the perspective of service and development, stressing that leadership should be based on competence rather than personal ambition.

“I have never fought for any position because of self-gratification. I have always believed our people deserve better, and I have always engaged in politics based on issues,” he said.

Commenting on the controversy surrounding the APC governorship primary, Sulaiman maintained that every aspirant willingly participated in the party’s internal process and should respect its outcome.

“The process was there for everybody to see. Once the game has been played and a winner declared, people cannot suddenly begin to fault the process simply because it did not favour them.
“If those complaining today had emerged through the same process, would they have rejected the nomination? I don’t think so,” he said.

He argued that members of the G-15 should have raised any concerns about the process before the emergence of the party’s candidate rather than after the exercise had been concluded.

Sulaiman also referenced President Bola Tinubu’s position that APC governors would play a leading role in the emergence of their successors, saying Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq remained the recognised leader of the party in Kwara State.

“The President made it clear that governors would choose their successors. In Kwara, the governor is the leader of the party. If there were laid-down guidelines that were breached, those complaining should have pointed them out,” he said.

He reiterated that politics should remain a vehicle for delivering good governance and recalled that his own campaign was anchored on the Kwara Prosperity Agenda, which prioritised security, healthcare, education, infrastructure and youth employment.

Despite the disagreements within the ruling party, Sulaiman expressed confidence that the APC would remain united ahead of the 2027 governorship election and retain power in the state.

“When it comes to campaigns, there is nothing the opposition can say that can beat the APC at the polls. Our people are intelligent and can compare performances.

“I have seen Kwara under the PDP and under the APC. Whether it is healthcare, education, sports facilities, or infrastructure, people can judge for themselves.

“Eventually, Kwara North will come together, Kwara Central will play its role, and Kwara South will be decisive. Based on the performance of the APC and what I know about our people, I believe the party will still carry the day in 2027,” he said.

Radda reveals why Katsina will vote for Tinubu in 2027

Published

on

Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, says the state will support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

Radda cited the President’s longstanding political relationships with the state’s leaders and his support for its interests.

Radda stated this on Monday while receiving a delegation led by a former Zamfara State governor and Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Abdulaziz Yari, who visited Katsina to seek support for Tinubu’s re-election.

Yari, who visited the Katsina and Daura emirates as part of the mobilisation effort, declined to comment on the purpose of his visit.

However, Radda said the delegation had concluded its engagements with traditional rulers, explaining that the visits were intended to secure support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

“He was here to canvas for votes. He has gone around to visit the traditional institutions to explain to them the mission and vision of Mr President and his intention for this country,” the governor said.

Radda expressed confidence that the engagements would translate into electoral support for the President.

“We assured them of our efforts to ensure the victory of Mr President come 2027 election, Insha Allah,” he said.

The governor described the reception accorded to the delegation as encouraging, claiming that residents had responded positively to the campaign for Tinubu’s re-election.

“It was very interesting, and they have seen it themselves. Katsina has responded positively to supporting Mr President,” Radda said.

He added that the traditional rulers visited by the delegation had expressed support for Tinubu, whom he described as a son of the soil.

“They have shown their support, and they have pledged their loyalty to Mr President. They consider Mr President as the son of the soil,” he said.

Explaining the basis of Tinubu’s political ties with Katsina, Radda said the President had supported the state’s political interests and maintained longstanding relationships with its prominent leaders.

According to the governor, Tinubu supported former President Muhammadu Buhari, who hailed from Katsina, and had a close political relationship with the late President Umaru Yar’Adua.

“He has been a political friend to our late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. So Katsina State is his home, and he has come to reassure us,” Radda said.

Katsina is a politically significant state in northern Nigeria and was the home state of Buhari, who served as president from 2015 to 2023.

As political parties begin preparations for the 2027 general elections, efforts to secure the support of influential state leaders and traditional institutions are forming part of wider mobilisation campaigns ahead of the polls.

The governor expressed optimism that the political engagements with traditional rulers and other stakeholders would strengthen support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

Folarin buries the hatchet, backs Alli for Oyo gov ahead of 2027

Published

on

The All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Oyo State for the 2027 election, Sharafadeen Alli, and former Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin, on Monday closed ranks in a move to unite the party ahead of the general elections.

The development comes amid a reported rift within the state chapter of the APC, following allegations by Folarin’s camp that the governorship primary that produced Alli as the party’s candidate was marred by irregularities.

Folarin, while addressing party supporters who trooped out in large numbers to welcome him back to Ibadan on Monday, appealed to aggrieved aspirants and their supporters to set aside their differences as the general elections approach.

He declared his support for Alli and all other APC candidates in the state for the 2027 elections, urging members dissatisfied with the outcome of the governorship primary to close ranks and work for the party’s success.

He also raised Alli’s hand in a show of support at the gathering held in Ibadan, the state capital.

The PUNCH reports that Folarin was aggrieved over the circumstances under which Alli emerged as the governorship candidate of the party and called for a fresh election free of manipulation.

He was subsequently invited by President Bola Tinubu, who asked him to work for his re-election and Alli’s victory.

The PUNCH also reports that the President met with another aggrieved aspirant, the senator representing Oyo North, Abdulfatai Buhari, at the Aso Rock Villa at the weekend and urged him to work for the party’s victory in the 2027 elections.

Acknowledging the grievances within the party, Folarin said it was understandable for aspirants who had invested years in pursuing their governorship ambitions to feel disappointed with the outcome of the process.

He said, “I have invested 26 years of my life in becoming governor. If I feel cheated, am I not expected to be angry? The aggrieved members deserved to be heard and appealed to.”

He expressed concern over the pace of reconciliation efforts by a committee led by Prof Taoheed Adedoja and Senator Femi Lanlehin, among others, saying the committee had achieved only about 20 per cent of its target.

He attributed the slow pace of reconciliation to mutual grievances, adding that the approaching elections made it imperative for party leaders to resolve their differences and work together.

Folarin said he had met with former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu; Buhari; and former deputy governor, Rauf Olaniyan, at Iyaganku, Ibadan, as part of efforts to address the crisis.

He urged party members to align with Alli, effective Monday, stressing that President Tinubu’s appointment of him as coordinator of the Oyo State Presidential Campaign Council required him to work for the success of all APC candidates in the state.

“The party must increase the votes it secured for Tinubu in Oyo during the 2023 presidential election, while also ensuring that APC governorship and legislative candidates emerge victorious in 2027,” he said.

Folarin also called for a review of the party’s reward system, insisting that members who worked for its success should benefit from their contributions rather than be overlooked.

He urged Alli to work with party leaders to accommodate aggrieved members, adding that experienced politicians should not be sidelined in the reconciliation process.

“We won’t allow Alli to rest until all aggrieved members get their own benefits,” Folarin insisted.

He further urged party leaders and supporters to leave the gathering and spread the message that efforts were being made to resolve the crisis, stressing that little time remained before the elections.

Recall that Folarin, alongside Adelabu, Buhari, Olaniyan and other aggrieved chieftains of the party had been engaged in rallying support for Tinubu’s re-election while distancing themselves from supporting Alli in his governorship bid.
