We’ll reject any electoral fraud in 2027, says Makinde

Published

on

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that the opposition will reject any attempt to manipulate the 2027 electoral process, warning against suppressing the will of the people in the general elections.

Makinde, who is the presidential candidate of the Allied People’s Movement, said the outcome of the 2027 polls must reflect the wishes of the electorate.

He gave the warning in Bauchi while speaking with journalists after a closed-door meeting with Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed.

“They must not suppress the will of the people. They must not suppress whatever decision they are going to take, and we will ensure that does not happen.

“We will not allow any electoral malpractice. The outcome must reflect the voice of Nigerians,” he said.

Makinde, who described the country’s current political climate as “toxic” and one of the darkest periods in the nation’s history, expressed optimism that a new political dawn was approaching.

“Being in opposition, the political environment is very toxic. It is the darkest moment, I can say that to you. But when the day is about to break, that is the darkest point.

“So, I can assure Nigerians that irrespective of the challenges we are faced with, the day is about to break for a new dawn in the country. Tomorrow, the sun will start rising again for Nigeria,” he stated.

Speaking on the APM’s chances in the 2027 presidential election, Makinde said the party was confident because Nigerians would ultimately determine the outcome of the poll.

He recalled how he emerged victorious in the 2019 Oyo State governorship election despite the dominance of the then-ruling All Progressives Congress at both the federal and state levels.

“In Oyo State in 2019, as an opposition party then in the PDP, APC was ruling at the federal level and also at the state level, but we won.

“It is the people. Democracy is about the people of Nigeria. We believe they will speak very loudly and clearly when the time comes,” he added.

Addressing concerns over insecurity in Oyo State, the governor argued that the recent security challenges should be viewed in proper context, noting that the state had enjoyed years of relative peace before the incidents.

“I have been on this job for seven years and about two months. The insecurity you mentioned happened barely two months ago. For several years, we didn’t witness anything like this in Oyo State.

“I declared to run for the presidency of Nigeria at 4 p.m., and by 9 a.m. the following morning, the children were abducted,” he said.

Earlier, Mohammed said his meeting with Makinde centred on governance, security and the future of the APM as an opposition party.

“We came together to examine challenges, exchange ideas and learn from one another. Governor Seyi Makinde, as a seasoned engineer who has accomplished so much in Oyo State, is someone from whom I have learned a great deal,” Mohammed said.

He commended Makinde’s developmental strides in Oyo State, saying the governor had executed projects that ordinarily fall within the responsibility of the Federal Government.

Mohammed added that both governors also discussed security challenges affecting their states and the growth of the APM ahead of the 2027 elections.

“We also had extensive discussions on security, which remains a major challenge for us as chief security officers of our respective states. We shared experiences and explored ways of addressing these challenges collectively.

“Most importantly, we discussed the future of our party, the APM, which is steadily growing into the next major opposition party in the country. The party is repositioning itself to play the role of a constructive opposition.

“Governor Makinde, as our presidential candidate, is working tirelessly to ensure that our campaigns are issue-based, free from malice and driven by maturity, sound ideas and capable individuals who can deliver effective leadership,” he added.

Radda reveals why Katsina will vote for Tinubu in 2027

Published

on

Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, says the state will support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

Radda cited the President’s longstanding political relationships with the state’s leaders and his support for its interests.

Radda stated this on Monday while receiving a delegation led by a former Zamfara State governor and Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Abdulaziz Yari, who visited Katsina to seek support for Tinubu’s re-election.

Yari, who visited the Katsina and Daura emirates as part of the mobilisation effort, declined to comment on the purpose of his visit.

However, Radda said the delegation had concluded its engagements with traditional rulers, explaining that the visits were intended to secure support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

“He was here to canvas for votes. He has gone around to visit the traditional institutions to explain to them the mission and vision of Mr President and his intention for this country,” the governor said.

Radda expressed confidence that the engagements would translate into electoral support for the President.

“We assured them of our efforts to ensure the victory of Mr President come 2027 election, Insha Allah,” he said.

The governor described the reception accorded to the delegation as encouraging, claiming that residents had responded positively to the campaign for Tinubu’s re-election.

“It was very interesting, and they have seen it themselves. Katsina has responded positively to supporting Mr President,” Radda said.

He added that the traditional rulers visited by the delegation had expressed support for Tinubu, whom he described as a son of the soil.

“They have shown their support, and they have pledged their loyalty to Mr President. They consider Mr President as the son of the soil,” he said.

Explaining the basis of Tinubu’s political ties with Katsina, Radda said the President had supported the state’s political interests and maintained longstanding relationships with its prominent leaders.

According to the governor, Tinubu supported former President Muhammadu Buhari, who hailed from Katsina, and had a close political relationship with the late President Umaru Yar’Adua.

“He has been a political friend to our late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. So Katsina State is his home, and he has come to reassure us,” Radda said.

Katsina is a politically significant state in northern Nigeria and was the home state of Buhari, who served as president from 2015 to 2023.

As political parties begin preparations for the 2027 general elections, efforts to secure the support of influential state leaders and traditional institutions are forming part of wider mobilisation campaigns ahead of the polls.

The governor expressed optimism that the political engagements with traditional rulers and other stakeholders would strengthen support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

Folarin buries the hatchet, backs Alli for Oyo gov ahead of 2027

Published

on

The All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Oyo State for the 2027 election, Sharafadeen Alli, and former Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin, on Monday closed ranks in a move to unite the party ahead of the general elections.

The development comes amid a reported rift within the state chapter of the APC, following allegations by Folarin’s camp that the governorship primary that produced Alli as the party’s candidate was marred by irregularities.

Folarin, while addressing party supporters who trooped out in large numbers to welcome him back to Ibadan on Monday, appealed to aggrieved aspirants and their supporters to set aside their differences as the general elections approach.

He declared his support for Alli and all other APC candidates in the state for the 2027 elections, urging members dissatisfied with the outcome of the governorship primary to close ranks and work for the party’s success.

He also raised Alli’s hand in a show of support at the gathering held in Ibadan, the state capital.

The PUNCH reports that Folarin was aggrieved over the circumstances under which Alli emerged as the governorship candidate of the party and called for a fresh election free of manipulation.

He was subsequently invited by President Bola Tinubu, who asked him to work for his re-election and Alli’s victory.

The PUNCH also reports that the President met with another aggrieved aspirant, the senator representing Oyo North, Abdulfatai Buhari, at the Aso Rock Villa at the weekend and urged him to work for the party’s victory in the 2027 elections.

Acknowledging the grievances within the party, Folarin said it was understandable for aspirants who had invested years in pursuing their governorship ambitions to feel disappointed with the outcome of the process.

He said, “I have invested 26 years of my life in becoming governor. If I feel cheated, am I not expected to be angry? The aggrieved members deserved to be heard and appealed to.”

He expressed concern over the pace of reconciliation efforts by a committee led by Prof Taoheed Adedoja and Senator Femi Lanlehin, among others, saying the committee had achieved only about 20 per cent of its target.

He attributed the slow pace of reconciliation to mutual grievances, adding that the approaching elections made it imperative for party leaders to resolve their differences and work together.

Folarin said he had met with former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu; Buhari; and former deputy governor, Rauf Olaniyan, at Iyaganku, Ibadan, as part of efforts to address the crisis.

He urged party members to align with Alli, effective Monday, stressing that President Tinubu’s appointment of him as coordinator of the Oyo State Presidential Campaign Council required him to work for the success of all APC candidates in the state.

“The party must increase the votes it secured for Tinubu in Oyo during the 2023 presidential election, while also ensuring that APC governorship and legislative candidates emerge victorious in 2027,” he said.

Folarin also called for a review of the party’s reward system, insisting that members who worked for its success should benefit from their contributions rather than be overlooked.

He urged Alli to work with party leaders to accommodate aggrieved members, adding that experienced politicians should not be sidelined in the reconciliation process.

“We won’t allow Alli to rest until all aggrieved members get their own benefits,” Folarin insisted.

He further urged party leaders and supporters to leave the gathering and spread the message that efforts were being made to resolve the crisis, stressing that little time remained before the elections.

Recall that Folarin, alongside Adelabu, Buhari, Olaniyan and other aggrieved chieftains of the party had been engaged in rallying support for Tinubu’s re-election while distancing themselves from supporting Alli in his governorship bid.
