Tinubu very passionate about school feeding — First Lady

Published

on

The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has said President Bola Tinubu is passionate about establishing a sustainable school feeding programme, expressing confidence that it would be firmly in place before the end of the administration.

She stated this on Tuesday while receiving a five-member delegation from the World Bank led by its Country Director for Nigeria, Dr Matthew Verghis, at the State House, Abuja.

According to a statement released by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi, the meeting focused on strengthening collaboration on Early Childhood Development programmes in Nigeria.

Speaking during the engagement, the First Lady stressed the importance of investing in children from an early age to improve their growth and future prospects.

“Investing in early childhood development remains critical, not just to improve growth opportunities for children, but also to shape and sharpen their focus,” she said.

She noted that the Federal Government remained committed to initiatives that would improve the lives of Nigerians.

“The population size of Nigeria alone is our advantage because Nigeria is a great nation,” she said.

Senator Tinubu said the administration had adopted a multi-sectoral approach to development, citing interventions in health, education, environmental sanitation and nutrition.

“You talked on multi-sectoral approach; that is what we have been doing. I will say that Mr President has gotten himself a wonderful team; they got it.

“When it comes to tuberculosis, we went out for sensitisation and promoted the campaign. And now, talking about our children, those are the joy of our nation; if we have to do a lot,” she said.

The First Lady also pledged to continue working with the wives of state governors to implement programmes aimed at improving children’s welfare across the country.

“We are looking forward to school feeding. I can assure that before we finish our tenure, it would have been properly established because even Mr President is very passionate about this, even when he was the Governor in Lagos State,” she said.

Earlier, Verghis called for stronger collaboration with Nigerian leaders to advance Early Childhood Development, describing it as one of the country’s most important long-term investments.

“Every five or six years, we reframe our programmes in Nigeria. Nigeria is, unsurprisingly, one of the World Bank’s largest partners and our office here is one of the largest in the world.

“In the framework, investing in people is an important focus of the World Bank. We are partners in education and nutrition programmes. We have programmes on skills. We recognise the importance of investing in people,” he said.

He said investments in children from pregnancy to age five improve cognitive development, reduce healthcare costs and help break cycles of poverty.

Verghis also urged the First Lady to use her platform to promote a multi-sectoral approach to Early Childhood Development programmes.

“Nigeria is a very important partner for the World Bank and her success is crucial for the World Bank to achieve its target.

“We have targets for healthcare delivery, broadband access and energy access. For these various things, if Nigeria does not succeed, the World Bank is not succeeding,” he said.

The World Bank delegation said its five-year country partnership framework would focus on implementing programmes that improve nutrition, education, sanitation and other key areas affecting child development, adding that the First Lady’s leadership would be critical to the initiative’s success.

Oluremi Tinubu hails Wike for transforming Abuja City gate

Published

on

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu on Monday commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for transforming Abuja City Gate into a major recreational landmark.

She lamented that no state government entered the N50m prize category of the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Green Nigeria Challenge, designed to encourage youths to convert abandoned spaces and dumpsites into green parks and gardens.

She spoke during a ceremony at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, to honour the FCT Administration for its environmental efforts, at which she presented Certificates of Commendation to Wike and the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Bunkure.

Senior Special Assistant on Media to the First Lady, Busola Kukoyi, revealed details of the engagement in a statement she signed and released on Monday titled ‘Posterity Will Judge You Well for the Development of the Federal Capital Territory.’

The First Lady described the City Gate transformation as a physical manifestation of what the community category of the Green Challenge was designed to inspire and expressed disappointment that the category attracted no submissions from any state.

The Household and State categories of the Green Nigeria Challenge remain open until December 20, 2026.

“It was a N50m prize money, and they didn’t enter. This was supposed to get our youth involved,” she said.

Mrs Tinubu said the initiative was designed to encourage states to convert neglected public spaces into clean and attractive environments and appealed to wives of state governors to mobilise young people into environmental clubs and sustainability initiatives.

She stated, “I’m using this opportunity to appeal to our First Ladies: get our young children into the environmental clubs and environmental societies for our youth in tertiary institutions.

“I remember when I was in the College of Education, I was a member of the Youth Environmental Programme for West Africa. We travelled from Nigeria throughout West Africa by road. It was a memorable experience for us.”

On the City Gate itself, she said, “When I saw what he did with the City Gate, my God, unbelievable. I want to thank him. He’s done very well. The remodelled Abuja City Gate is an excellent example of what abandoned public areas can become: a transformed key national landmark that warmly welcomes all Nigerians and visitors to our nation’s capital.”

She also called for youth engagement in national environmental stewardship, saying, “We have to engage our young people and make sure that they can help build.

“Everybody has something to contribute to this country. It’s a great country, and that’s why we are doing all we can.”

Wike, for his part, credited the First Lady with personally inspiring the City Gate transformation, revealing that it originated from her observations after returning from foreign trips.

“She called on me to say: ‘Why do we travel out and we do not learn anything when we travel? Look at the way our city looks, look at the way city gates in other countries look. Why not do something to change it?’” he said.

He explained that the FCT Administration subsequently engaged the original designers of the City Gate to develop a new concept that has since transformed the location into a vibrant public attraction visited even at night.

“Today, by the grace of God, whenever you pass there, even at night, you see people gathered there. There is activity. That is what it is supposed to be,” he said.

The former Rivers Governor announced plans to replicate the concept in the Lifecamp area of Abuja.

He announced, “I’ve also told the First Lady that I want to replicate another one when you go to the Lifecamp area.

“We have a green space where people come to relax, but it doesn’t look tidy or attractive.

“I’ve directed that it should be redesigned into another recreation centre where people can come and relax. That is what happens in other countries.”

Wike described environmental cleanliness as a prerequisite for genuine national development.

According to him, “Nobody can talk about the development of any country or city where the environment is not clean.

“When you go to Europe, what attracts you is the beauty, the green environment and the clean surroundings.

“When you put green areas around developments, it looks natural. That is the way we are supposed to live.”

Poor maintenance culture undermining Nigeria’s development, says Okonjo-Iweala

Published

on

The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said Nigeria’s poor maintenance culture is diminishing the value of the country’s infrastructure and slowing its economic development.

Okonjo-Iweala stated this on Monday while delivering the keynote address at the 2026 Delta State Economic and Investment Summit in Asaba.

Speaking on the theme, ‘Harnessing Our Strengths, Unlocking Our Potentials,’ the former Minister of Finance said budgetary allocations alone would not translate into development without effective execution and proper maintenance of infrastructure.

“The fact is that endowments alone do not add value. Budgetary allocations alone do not lead to new roads or good maintenance.

“We lack a maintenance culture in the country. I have to say that. I am Nigerian, but we need that,” she said.

She stressed that governments should focus not only on initiating new projects but also on preserving existing infrastructure to maximise economic returns.

Okonjo-Iweala also called for improvements in critical infrastructure, including ports and digital facilities, to reduce the cost of doing business and boost Nigeria’s competitiveness.

“We need better ports and digital infrastructure, and lower trade costs. Execution is what matters, and successful execution requires focus. It requires prioritisation,” she added.

The three-day summit, organised by the Delta State Government, is aimed at attracting investments and promoting economic growth in the state.

The event drew policymakers, investors and business leaders from within and outside Nigeria, including delegations from China and Brazil.

Vice President Kashim Shettima declared the summit open on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.

Imo Speaker pledges support for women’s reserved seats bill

Published

on

The Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Chike Olemgbe, has assured stakeholders that the House will give favourable consideration to a bill seeking to reserve three additional seats for women in the state legislature.

Olemgbe gave the assurance on Monday when the Imo State chapter of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria paid an advocacy visit to members of the Assembly, urging support for the proposed legislation.

He told the delegation that if the bill is presented before the 10th Assembly during its tenure, it would receive positive legislative attention, stressing the need to support women to contribute their quota to the development of the state.

The Speaker also recalled that Governor Hope Uzodimma had supported the emergence of four female candidates of the All Progressives Congress, who may join the Assembly in the 11th House.

Speaking during the group’s one-day state-level electoral college meeting with lawmakers, a former member of the Assembly, Uju Onwudiwe, said there was a need to reserve three seats for women, with one drawn from each of Imo State’s three senatorial districts.

She said the campaign was not intended to displace men from elective offices.

“We cannot achieve anything as women without the support of the men. The women need a space to discuss on issues concerning them”.

According to Onwudiwe, “This bill which is the first in the constitution amendment town hall meeting is aimed at promoting participation of women in the political decision making in the state. The bill talks about all-inclusiveness”.

She explained that the proposal seeks to create three additional seats in the House of Assembly, increasing the number of lawmakers from 27 to 30.

“The special seats offers three extra seats for the House of Assembly, so that instead of having 27 lawmakers, Imo Assembly will now have 30 member-house. It will go through a electoral college model that brings stakeholders together for decision-making”.

She urged the Imo State House of Assembly to give the bill favourable consideration when it is listed on the Order Paper.

Also speaking, Mrs Ogechi Ikeh, who represented the National President of NILOWV, Mrs Irene Awunah-Ikyegh, urged the Speaker and members of the House to support the proposed legislation to enable women to participate more actively in decision-making.

“There’s need to bring women with capacity, integrity and competence into the corridors of power for contributions on matters that concern them and to bring a balance to national growth.

“It will be recalled that the Reserved Seats for Women Bill (House Bill 1349) is a proposed constitutional amendment in Nigeria designed to address the severe underrepresentation of women in legislative bodies by creating additional, exclusive seats for female candidates”.
