Rescued victims of human trafficking have recounted how they were lured from Nigeria with promises of jobs and a better life in Côte d’Ivoire, only to end up in forced labour, prostitution and s3xual exploitation. NigerianRelocation Services
The rescued victims include Monica, 17; Juliet, 18; Rejoice, 25; Joy, 22; Esther, and Monica, 38, who said traffickers exploited their desire for a better future with false promises of employment.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, July 23, 2026 by the founder of the Global Anti-Human Trafficking Organisation, Prosper Michael, the victims were rescued in a joint operation involving the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and relevant authorities in Côte d’Ivoire.
Recounting her ordeal, Monica said she accepted a bakery job offer in Abuja before being taken through Lagos to Côte d’Ivoire.
“I informed my parents because I believed the offer was genuine. We later realised there were no jobs after we were locked in a room,” she said.
She added that the victims were instructed to tell anyone who contacted them that they were safe despite being forced to work.
“When I spoke to my mother, I started crying, and they immediately collected the phone from me. They kept deducting money from the little we earned without explaining why,” she said, adding that she and another victim eventually escaped with the help of local residents and contacted GAHTO.
Another survivor, Monica Tamah, said she travelled abroad hoping to provide for her family and fund her daughter’s education, only to be forced into prostitution.
“When we got there, we discovered there were no jobs. Instead, we were told we had been brought for prostitution and had to repay transportation debts through sex work,” she said, adding that she remained in captivity for about six months before she was rescued.
Monica claimed that she and other victims were forced to sleep with as many as 15 men daily.
“They made about 50,000 CFA francs every day from us, but we received little or nothing. I remained there for about six months before I was rescued,” she said.
GAHTO said its representative in Côte d’Ivoire carried out the rescue with support from local authorities and disclosed that three other victims from Benue State were rescued in a separate operation.
The organisation described the operations as a major breakthrough in its campaign against human trafficking and the protection of vulnerable Nigerians across West Africa. NigerianRelocation Services
“We urge Nigerians to verify overseas employment and migration offers through appropriate government channels, remain vigilant against suspicious recruiters and promptly report suspected trafficking cases to law enforcement agencies.
“We also call for stronger collaboration among governments, security agencies and international partners to dismantle trafficking networks, rescue victims and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice,” the statement added.

The Plateau State Police Command has arrested a 40-year-old man, Davou Dachung, for the alleged murder of his wife in Jos South Local Government Area of the state.
The spokesperson for the command, SP Alfred Alabo, who disclosed this in a statement on Friday, said the incident was reported at the Kaduna Vom Divisional Police Headquarters on 20 October.
According to Alabo, the divisional police officer in charge of the area mobilised officers to the scene following receipt of the report.
The suspect was subsequently arrested, while the victim Jessica Davou, was rushed to a hospital for medical attention but was later confirmed deceased.
The PPRO said an initial search of the suspect’s residence and further interrogation led to the recovery of three locally fabricated firearm and five cartridges.
“The Plateau State Police Command under the leadership of CP Ayodeji Faniyan psc, mnips, fdc has arrested one Davou Dachung, 40 years old in connection with a case of Culpable Homicide reported at Kaduna Vom Division of the Command on 20/10/2026 at about 12:00pm,” the statement read.
“The suspect was alleged to have shot the victim, one Jessica Davou, who happens to be his wife with a fabricated firearm on the left side of her chest on 18th October 2026 at about 09:00AM at their residence in Haita Fwil Village, Vwang, Kogot, in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
“Upon receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police immediately directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the area to mobilize his men to the scene.
“Consequently, the suspect was arrested while the victim was rushed to the Hospital for medical attention but unfortunately, confirmed dead.
“Further interrogation of the suspect by crack Detectives of the State Violent Crime Response Unit led to the detection and recovery of additional weapons recovered from the suspect making a total of three locally fabricated firearms and five cartridges.
“The case is currently under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department after which the suspect will be charged to Court upon conclusion of our investigation.
“The Commissioner of Police Plateau State Command wishes to reiterate the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that persons found culpable of violent crimes are brought to justice in accordance with the law.

Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a suspected kidnapper, Mukaila Iliyasu, and recovered N200,000 cash during a joint security operation in Nasarawa State.
Acting Media Information Officer,HQ JTF Operation WHIRL STROKE, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, disclosed this in a statement on 31 October 2026.
According to the statement, troops of Sector 2, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), working alongside operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), arrested the suspect at Akwaba, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area.
The Army disclosed that the suspect threatened to abduct a female resident if she fails to pay N200,000 ransom.
On October 29, 2026, a soldier, acting in disguise, delivered the money to the suspect, leading to his arrest while receiving the alleged ransom.
“Troops of Sector 2, Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested a suspected kidnapper during a joint intelligence-led operation, recovering N200,000 allegedly demanded as ransom from a victim,” the statement read
“On 29 October 2026, DSS operatives alerted troops of Sector 2, Operation WHIRL STROKE to an incident involving an adult female resident, who was allegedly threatened by one Mukaila Iliyasu.
“The suspect reportedly demanded N200,000 from the victim, threatening to abduct her if she failed to meet his demand.
“Following the report, troops and DSS operatives promptly coordinated an anti-kidnapping operation to apprehend the suspect.
“In a well-coordinated sting operation, a soldier, acting in disguise and displaying exceptional gallantry, delivered the money to the suspect, leading to his arrest while receiving the alleged ransom.
“The suspect was subsequently handed over to the DSS for further investigation and possible prosecution.
“The operation was successfully conducted with precision and professionalism.”
The Force Commander, Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE and General Officer Commanding 5 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Moses Kolo Gara, commended the troops and DSS operatives for their professionalism, gallantry and effective inter-agency collaboration.
He urged them to sustain the existing intelligence-sharing framework and operational synergy towards tackling kidnapping and other security threats within the Joint Operations Area.

Mother sentenced to 7 consecutive life terms after her 11-year-old daughter gives birth to her husband’s baby
A woman in Oklahoma, United States, has been sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences after failing to protect her 11-year-old daughter from sexual abuse and then allowing the child to give birth at home without medical assistance after she became pregnant with her husband’s child.
Cherie Walker was sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences by a Muskogee County judge on Friday, October 30, 2026, per Oklahoma City Fox affiliate, KOKL and public Muskogee County court records reviewed by PEOPLE.
Walker, 34, was charged with one count of child sexual abuse and six counts of child neglect in August 2025 after authorities learned that her 11-year-old daughter had given birth to a baby inside the family’s home without prenatal care or medical assistance on August 16, 2025, according to reports from local outlets.
In a statement to KOTV at the time, Muskogee County Assistant District Attorney Janet Hutson said that both Walker and her husband, Dustin Walker, claimed that they did not know the child was pregnant when she gave birth.
“This child is traumatized,” Hutson told KOTV at the time. “She’s been through a horrific ordeal. I mean, not only has somebody gotten her pregnant, but she gave birth at home without medical assistance, and this will be her life for the rest of her life.”
In another statement to KJRH, the district attorney’s office said that DNA testing confirmed that Walker’s husband — the child’s stepfather — was the baby’s father.
The Muskogee County district attorney’s office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
Prosecutors later argued that Walker knew her husband was sexually abusing her daughter but did nothing to stop it. She was convicted on all seven felony counts on July 17, 2026, according to public Muskogee County court records reviewed by PEOPLE.
The child’s stepfather pleaded guilty to felony child sexual abuse and neglect charges in March.
He was later sentenced to life in prison, per the outlet
The child’s grandmother, Michelle Justus, was also charged in relation to the case, as prosecutors argued that she knew sexual abuse was happening within the household and did nothing to stop it.
